I wrote an email to a dear shaykh about the superiority of the naqshbandi silsila as mentioned by hazrat mujadid alf thani rh in maktubat sharif. I received the following reply which is full of a lot of hikmah;

No,I will not say this,I will ask a very simple question : "Do you 'really' believe that 'every' naqshbandi starts from where Shaikh Gangohi ra,Haji Imdad ullah ra and Hazrat Husain Ahmad Madani ra ended ? ". Syedena Ghaus Al Azam ra has got a very high status,I would consider it an insult to him to include his name in the list.

Actually this is a big misunderstanding on part of naqshbandis .When Hazrat Mujaddad said it and wrote it in his maktoobat,he was perfectly right.This is how it was in his time...,but neither before him nor after him.

Allah swt choose a specific person/silsila for a particular period of time.During that time indeed that particular person/silsila is on top.The special Rahma of Allah swt showers over them,their name and fame spreads through continents ,their mureeds get very high ranks with little effort,their enemies are destroyed , their lovers favoured.They come,they see and they conquer.But this state of affair does not remain forever.Every day is a new day.Gradually the signs of decline becomes visible in the silsila...and ultimately they are content only with the stories of their Akabir,they keep sitting around a fountain which has dried long ago.They may still get high ranks..,,but proportional to their efforts,no special favours any more.

It is like a swimming pool,the owner fills it with fresh water...gradually the water gets polluted and stagnated.,,then the owner decides that now is the time to change the water.

It does not happen only in silsilas...,it has happened to Ummas.Look at the stories of Bani Israel,once the most favoured Umma is no more the favourite child,the water in the pool had stagnated and had started stinking...so the water was changed and fresh water in the form of Muslim Umma was put in,now this Umma being the last one will not be changed as a whole but various Mujaddads will keep cleaning the water.

So you see,those naqshbandis who speak tirelessly about the magnanimity of their silsila,only because Hazrat Mujaddad said so....are badly mistaken :)

I certainly don't want to diminish the status if this great silsila....but for me 'every silsila is as great as any other silsila'....big people are big no matter which silsila they belong to....and small people like us are small,no matter which silsila we belong to.For us it is our personnel efforts second only to the blessings of Allah swt.

السلام عليكم و رحمة الله و بركاته

london bhai,

Wouldn't the matter of superiority of the different Tariqahs be similar to how the Madhahib is viewed in relation to ijtihad: right with the possibility of being wrong and the other is wrong with the possibility of being right?

That position looks much more humble than this: right without the possibility of being wrong and the other is wrong without the possibility of being right.

About the superiority of the tariqas well what can be said. All are great though one may prefer one over the other. These are mostly academic discussions which is a bit of thing on the side.
