If the wordings of the Hadith is a fabrication, then how can the meaning of the Hadtith be sound?

I understand that meaning of Hadith could be sound If a hadith is made up with a weak chain of transmitters, yet the message contained within it is supported by the Qur'an or any other Hadith, just not in those exact words. I don't know if there is any other reason to take the meaning of a fabricated Hadith to be sound.

W-Salam,

Slight more detail Hazrat with your permission...

[17:60] (Remember) when We said to you that your Lord encompasses all humans. And We did not make the vision We showed to you, but a test for the people — and the tree cursed in the Qur‘an as well. And We warn them, yet it adds nothing to them but enormous rebellion.

Sayyidina Ibn Abbas (RA) and Imam Ahmed (RA):

Imam Qurtubi (RA) clearly records that this was the opinion of Ibn Abbas (RA) that al-Ru’yah of Allah (SWT) occured with the eyes.

هي رؤيا عين أريها النبي - صلى الله عليه وسلم - ليلة أسري به إلى بيت المقدس

Imam Ahmed Ibn Hanbal (RA) has confirmed this.

Maariful Qur'aan of Shaykh (Mufti) Shafi Usmani (RA):

The word 'fitnah' (فِتۡنَةً۬) appearing in verse 60: وَمَا جَعَلۡنَا ٱلرُّءۡيَا ٱلَّتِىٓ أَرَيۡنَـٰكَ إِلَّا فِتۡنَةً۬ لِّلنَّاسِ (And We showed you the scene [in the Night of Ascent - al-Mi'raj] only to make it a test for the people) is used in the Arabic language to convey many different meanings. It could mean falling into error and going astray, or trial or test or some disorder or upheaval as well. At this place, the probability of all these meanings exists. Early Tafsir authorities - Sayyidah 'A'ishah, Sayyidna Mu'awiyah, Hasan, Mujahid and others - have taken 'fitnah' as carrying the last sense given above. They have said that this 'fitnah' was that of apostacy (Irtidad) which relates to the time when the Holy Prophet Sallallahu 'Alayhi Wasallam: Peace be upon him told people about Mi'raj, how he went on his nocturnal journey to Baitul-Maqdis, to the heavens from there and his return to Makkah al-Mukarramah before dawn. There were many neo-Muslims who had yet to become staunch in their faith fell into the error of belying his statement and turned apostates. (Qurtubi)

It also stands proved from this event that the word رُّءۡيَا (ru'ya) is though also used in the Arabic language in the sense of dream but, at this place, what is being recounted is no matter of some dream. Had that been the case, there was no reason why people would become apostates. Dreams are dreams. Everyone can see such dreams. In fact, the purpose of employing the word: رُّءۡيَا (ru'ya) at this place is to show that the marvel was witnessed while awake. While commenting on this verse, some commentators have interpreted it to be referring to other events too besides the event of Mi'raj. But, they do not apply here as a whole. Therefore, the majority of commentators have declared the event of Mi'raj alone as the relevant subject of this verse. (As described in detail by al-Qurtubi)

Now I think I got it. Despite the Hadith being fabricated the essence of what it says is correct logically. Meaning, we were created to worship Allah, but we worship Allah by following the sunnah of rasulullah sallallahu alaihi wasallam. So, it logically follows that creation was for him, as it shows that we were created to follow him.

From the link you posted:

Imam Saif ad-Din Abu Ja'far bin Umar al-Humairi al-Hanafi in his
'al-Durr al-tanzeem fee mawlid al-nabi al-kareem' says:

"When Allah made Adam He revealed to Adam to ask Him:
O Allah! Why have you made my kuniyah as 'Abu Muhammad'?

Allah said: O Adam! Lift you head. He lifted his head and saw the Noor (light) of the Prophet of Allah (sallallahu 'alaihi wasallam) on the 'Arsh.

Adam asked: O Allah! Whose is this Noor?

Allah said: It is a Prophet from your progeny. His name is Ahmad in the skies and Muhammad on the Earth. If he were not created, I would not have created you or the skies and the Earth".

Q. what does the "Noor" of prophet sallallahu alaihi wasallam mean in the Hadith? Does that mean Nabi sallallahu alaihi wasallam was created at that time?

Have read about it a little. There are many ahadith about the first of creation, the first creation may have been the nur of the Prophet salallahu alaihi wa sallam, the pen, the water, the throne,or the aql, I can't decide which one could be true! But now I don't want to know about it as there's ikhtilaf which cause headache. I don't know, Allah knows what was thew first of creation.

I however believe Muhammad salallahu alaihi wa sallam was a prophet when Adam alaihis salam was still between spirit and body.

Salaams to all.

I've got responses from that site and I''ll be posting the responses, Insh'Allah when I get home from work.

In the meantime, I came across this site discussing the noor of the Prophet (SAW):

www.rasulallah.info/id36.html

It reads:

When Allah made the Divine decree to bring Creation into existence, He brought forth the Muhammadan Reality from His Lights. He then pulled away from this Reality all the worlds, upper and lower. Allah then informed Sayyidina Muhammad (salla lahu alayhi wa'ale hi wasallam) of his Prophethood, while Adam was nothing but soul and body. Then from him gushed forth the springs of the souls, making him superior to all created things, and the greater father to all things in existence.

Regarding the underlined bit, I've heard Shias saying similar things about how Ali, Fatima, Hassan and Hussain (may Allah be pleased with them all). When they were created their light is essentially the light of the heavens, sky etc? Is this the view of certain Sufis or what?

Were it Not for You, I Would Not Have Created Creation

Medina-HDIn his catalogue of hadith forgeries, Mulla ‘Ali al-Qari cites a spurious report alleging that Allah informed His beloved Prophet, peace be upon him: ‘Were it not for you, I would not have created the universe (law laka lama khalaqtu’l-aflaka).’1

But having cited the hadith, al-Qari says that although the hadith is forged (mawdu‘), ‘its meaning is sound.’2 This end assertion, that the hadith has a sound meaning, has raised considerable objection from some people; anger, even! For they feel this claim amounts to exaggeration – ghuluw, to use the Quranic language – about the Prophet, peace be upon him. And surely, as some have been quick to point out, it contradicts the Quranic verse which proclaims in no uncertain terms: ‘I created jinn and men only that they may worship Me.’ [51:56] The reason behind creating creation, they highlight, is worship; not the Prophet!

Yet a browse through traditional scholarly attitudes reveals al-Qari’s claim to be fairly normative. That is, classical Islamic scholarship seems to have been comfortable with this assertion. For instance, Ibn Rajab al-Hanbali reverently said about the Prophet: ‘he is the ultimate purpose behind creating the human race: its essence (‘aynuhu), its quintessence (khulasatuhu) and its very epitome (wasita ‘aqdihi).’3 Another even earlier Hanbali jurist, the highly critical Ibn al-Jawzi, stated: ‘The saints and the righteous are the very purpose of creation (al-awliya wa’l-salihun hum al-maqsud min al-kawn).’4 Of course, it hardly needs stating that the Prophet, upon whom be peace, is at the very head of such a purpose.

Yet for those who are resistant to the law laka - “were it not for you” – notion, or are over sensitive to what counts for exaggeration about the Prophet, peace be upon him, such quotations will have done little to abate their incredulity. The Arabs say: idha ‘arafa sabab, batala ‘ajab - “If the reason is appreciated, the astonishment departs.” Let me close this blog, therefore, with Ibn Taymiyyah’s analysis of the hadith, in the hope of lifting from such hearts their “disbelief”:

‘The excellence of our Prophet over the Angels was demonstrated on the Night of the Ascension (laylat al-mi‘raj) when he reached a station where he heard the “scratching of the pens.” He was now at a station higher than even that of the Angels. Now Allah manifests some of His tremendous power and astounding wisdom through righteous humans – via prophets and saints – in ways He does not do even via Angels. For He combined in the former, qualities that are dispersed throughout the other types of creation. So Allah created man’s physical body from the earth, whereas his spirit (ruh) was created from the Highest Assembly of Angels. This is why it has been said: “Man is a microcosm, but contains the macrocosm.”

‘Now Muhammad, peace be upon him, is the master of humanity, the best of creation and the noblest of them in Allah’s sight. Which is why it is said: “Allah created the universe because of him.” Or “But for him, He would not have created the Throne, Footstool, the heavens, the earth, sun or moon.” But this isn’t a hadith of the Prophet, peace be upon him; whether authentic or weak. It has not been reported by any of those versed in the Hadith science on the authority of the Prophet; nor is it known to have come from any Companion. In fact, it is not known who uttered it.

‘Nonetheless, it is possible to explain it from a sound perspective, such as with Allah’s statement: He has subjected to you whatever is in the heavens and the earth. [45:13] Or by His words: He subjected the ships to you that they may run upon the sea at His command, and subjected the rivers to you. He subjected to you the sun and moon, constant in their courses, and subjected to you the night and the day. And gave you of all you ask Him; and if you count the favours of Allah, you will never number them. [14:32-4]

‘There are other verses similar to these, all of which clarify that Allah created creation for the sake of mankind: even though it is known that in doing so Allah had another wisdom alongside this and greater than this.

‘Here, though, Allah explains to mankind the benefits the creation contains for them, and how they are immersed in His favours. So when it is said, “He did such and such [for this or that reason]“, it does not exclude the possibility that there could be other wisdoms behind the act. Likewise, the statement: “Were it not for so and so, such and such would not have been created”, does not negate the possibility of there being a higher wisdom behind the act. Instead, what it implies is that since the most pious of people is Muhammad, peace be upon him, creating him was a desirable end of deep-seated wisdom, more than in creating anyone else; and that the perfection of creation and the crown of its completion only occurred with [the Prophet] Muhammad …

‘Now since man is the the seal of creation; the last of creation; and its microcosm, their best will also be the best of all creation in absolute terms. Since Muhammad is the essence of humanity, the axis of creation, and the distributor of the collective, he is, so to say, the ultimate purpose behind creating creation. So an objection cannot be raised against the saying, “For him all was created” or “Were it not for him, creation would not have been created.” So if these, and similar words, are explained according to what the Book and the Sunnah indicate, they should be accepted.’5

To sum-up: since creation was created for mankind’s benefit; and since mankind was created to worship Allah; and since the perfection of such worship was manifested in, and by, the Prophet, peace be upon him, it may hence be said that he is the purpose behind creation being brought into existence. This, I hope, should help soothe those hearts that may have harboured undue opposition to the law laka reality, and deepen our connection to the Master of all Messengers.

O Allah, shower abundant blessings and peace upon our master,
Muhammad; the paragon of human perfection,
best of all creation.
Amin!

Another perspective

raise be to Alaah

Many false and fabricated ahadeeth (narrations) have been narrated that say similar things. For example:

"Were it not for you, I would not have created the universe."

This was quoted by al-Shawkani in al-Fawaid al-Majmoo'ah fi'l-Ahadeeth al-Mawdoo'ah (p. 326). He said:

Al-San'ani said: (it is) mawdoo' (fabricated).

Al-Albani said in al-Silsilah al-Da'eefah (282): (it is) mawdoo'.

Another example is the hadeeth narrated by al-Hakim according to which Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said:

"Allah revealed to 'Eesa (Jesus, peace be upon him): 'O 'Eesa, believe in Muhammad, and tell whoever you meet of your ummah (followers) to believe in him. For were it not for Muhammad, I would not have created Adam, and were it not for Muhammad, I would not have created Paradise and Hell. I created the Throne over the water and it would not settle until I wrote on it, La ilaha ill-Allah Muhammad Rasool Allah (There is no god but Allah and Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah)."

Al-Hakim said: its isnad (chain of narration) is saheeh! But al-Thahabi commented on this and said: I believe it is fabricated and falsely attributed to Sa'eed.

Here are some of the responses to the questions I posed to hadithanswers.com

As salamu 'alaykum

Question

Is the following hadith authentic?

Allah Ta'ala ordered Sayyiduna Adam ('alayhis salam) to send salutations
upon Nabi (sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam) as mahr (dowry) for Sayyidatuna
Hawa ('alayhas salam).

Answer

It is reported that When Sayyiduna Adam ('alayhis salam) wanted to come
close to Sayyidatuna Hawa ('alayhas salam) she requested her mahr
(dowry). Sayyiduna Adam ('alayhis salam) asked Allah Ta'ala as to what
he should give her. Allah Ta'ala replied "Send twenty durud
(salutations) on my chosen slave Muhammad ibn 'Abdillah. So Adam
('alayhis salam) did so.

Ibnul Jawzi (rahimahullah) has recorded this incident in his book
'Sulwatul Ahzan'. However Hafiz Sakhawi (rahimahullah) has stated that
he has not found a chain of narrators for this narration.

(Al Qawlul Badi', pg. 132)

Since the chain of narrators cannot be located, its authenticity cannot
be verified. One should abstain from quoting a narration until it's
authenticity can be verified.

And Allah Ta'ala knows best

As salam 'alaykum

Question

Is there a Hadith stating that the reason Allah created this universe
and everything it contains was for Muhammad (peace be upon him) to come
and fulfil Allah commandments? I'm basically asking, if it weren't for
Muhammad (peace be upon him) Allah wouldn't have created us?

Answer

The Hadith in question is reported as follows:

لولاك لما خلقت الافلاك

Translation: If it were not for you O Muhammad, I would have not created
the universe.

This Hadith is unanimously deemed as a fabrication, and is not suitable
to quote.

(Al Masnoo' Hadith: 255 , Kashful Khafa Hadith : 2121 , Al Fawaaidul
Majmoo'a pg. 326)

A Different version of this narration

Many scholars are of the opinion that even though the above Hadith is a
fabrication, the concept and meaning is correct and is substantiated by
other Hadiths and verses of the holy Quran.

(Al Asrarul Marfoo'a Hadith: 385, Kashful Khafa Hadith : 2121)

Among them are:

1. Allah Ta'ala mentions: 'He is the one who has created the entire
universe because of man'

(Sura Al Baqara verse: 29)

A recent Arab scholar, Shaykh Abdullah Sideeq Al- Ghumari (rahimahullah)
writes: "The above verse shows that if it were not for man Allah Ta'ala
would have not created the universe. Nabi (sallalahu 'alayhi wa sallam)
is the leader of mankind. It was customary for Arabs to address the
leader of a tribe by mentioning his nation as an honor for him.
Similarly here we are mentioned in the verse, but our leader ie.
Muhammad (sallalahu 'alayhi wa sallam) is being addressed".

(Footnotes on Qaseedatul Burdah of Shaykh Abdullah Sideeq Al-Ghumari)

2. Imam Hakim (rahimahullah) has recorded a lengthy narration on the
authority of Sayyiduna Umar (radiyallahu 'anh) regarding the tawbah
(repentance) of Adam ('alayhis salam), in which the following words
appear "..... If it were not for him (Muhammad sallalahu 'alayhi wa
sallam), I would not have even created you.

(Mustadrak Hakim vol. 2 pg. 615)

Imam Bayhaqi (rahimahullah) has graded this Hadith as weak. Some recent
scholars are also of the view that this Hadith is weak.

Imam Hakim (rahimahullah) has also reported another narration with
similar words on the authority of Abdullah bin Abbas (Radiyallahu
'anhuma), this narration supports the previous one thus making it
suitable to quote.

(Mustadrak Hakim vol. 2 pg. 615, Dala'ilun Nubuwwah vol. 5 pg. 489, Ar
Raddul Muhkamul Mateen pgs. 134-140, also see Shifaa us Siqaam pg 153)

Summary

The words which you have quoted in the question are not suitable to
quote as a Hadith, however the narration of Sayyiduna 'Umar
(radiyallahu'anhu) in Mustadrak Hakim is suitable and should be quoted
instead.

And Allah Ta'ala knows best,
