As salaama Alaykum wa rahmatullaah

Can any of the knowledgeable brothers and sisters compile a list / cirriculum of islamic sciences the layman should study to increase his knowledge of Islam. Specifically the english speaking layman living in the west who isn't able to study Islam full time either in the UK or abroad.
Can you also recommend books / institutions.

wsalaams,
i'd recommend that they try to learn arabic inshaAllah we gotta start somewhere, also to get a group of brothers together and press local ulama to start some sort of study circle. usually beginners would be basic fiqh and tajweed but let the ustadh decide which kitaab to teach from. this way they will be in the company of ulama who are easily accessible to them

but basic fiqh and tajweed can be boring for beginners so i'd also say to teach some ahaadith aswell maybe adab ul mufrad, or imam nawawis 40. sorry this is meant to be part of the above post

For kids, the most maktabs are using the Tasheel series. I highly recommend these for adults too, who want to start from the beginning, and feel the need for simple explanations and language. Taleemul Haq is also very good for beginners.
