The main purpose of sahaba going out in the path of Allah (s.w.t) was dawah (Tabligh), not kitaal. coz that is the main objective of prophethood. The post of brother sulaiman84 explains that.
Later Allah (s.w.t) revealed the below ayats. Subhanallah, the sahaba thought it so important that all would go in the path of Allah (s.w.t), and Allah (s.w.t) had to reveal an ayah for some to stop and acquire knowledge.

"And the believers should not all go out to fight. Of every troop of them, a party only should go forth, that they (who are left behind) may gain sound knowledge in religion, and that they may warn their folk when they return to them, so that they may guard themselves against evil."[Al-Tauba 9:122]

Posted above are from a bayan by mufti naval ur rahman db i heard long ago.

So, which ever sahabi died in the path of Allah (s.w.t), was to do tabligh. There are thousands of them. like bilal ra, abu ayyub ansari ra... etc...
The others that remained was to establish khilafa & propagate knowledge.

So, if any ignorant tablighi brother says, all should go, then give him a big NO. There are other aspects/branches of islam which need to be taken care of.

Number of Ghazwat

According to Musa bin 'Aqabah, Muhammad bin Ishaq, Waqidi, Ibn Sa'd, Ibn Jawzi and Dimyati Iraqi, there were a total of 27 Ghazwat in which Rasulullah (saw) participated. Sa'id bin Musayyab1 رحمة الله عليه documents 24 whilst Jabir bin Abdullah2 رضي الله عنه reports that there were 21 Ghazwat. Zaid bin Arqam3 رضي الله عنه narrates that the Ghazwat totaled just 19.

'Allamah Suhayli says that the reason for this discrepancy in the number of Ghazwat is that some scholars perhaps combined two or more Ghazwat into one because they occurred round about the same time within a single journey. This is why they considered the number of Ghawat to total less in number. Another reason could be that perhaps some scholars or narrators had no knowledge of these expeditions.4

Number of Sariya

Correspondingly, there is a difference of opinion as far as the number of Sariya is concerned as well. According to Ibn S'ad there were 40. Ibn Abdul-Barr reports 35, Muhammad bin Ishaq reports 38. Waqidi says that there were 48 Saraya whilst a total of 56 is narrated from Ibn Jawzi. For further details, refer to Zarqani volume 1 page 388.

1. As recorded by Abdur Razzaq with an authentic Sanad.
2. Narrated by Abu Ya'la with an authentic Sanad.
3. Narrated by Bukhari, Muslim and Tirmidhi.
4. Fathul Bari, Vol 7, page 218, Zarqani, Vol 1, page 388

Taken from Siratul Mustafa, Vol 2, pages 56-57.

Ghazwah is an expedition in which Rasulullah (saw) participated and Sariya is an expedition in which he did not participate but Sahabah were sent.

What can be said about this topic. Anybody can go through kitab ul jihad in any hadeeth book of the sihah sitta and the tafsir by the great imams al qurtubi, ibn kathir etc whose tafsir is relied upon to get an understanding of the issue. The same with seerah why not pick up the seerah of ibn hisham or ibn ishaaq and find out how they related such things? May ALLAH SWT bless the people of all efforts

Would be interesting to see the taweel that certain quarters will give to qutiba alaikum al qitaal...i..e fighting has been prescribed for you. Interestingly the word qitaal has been used more than j in the Quraan.

Practically for most people tablighi jamaat is the easiest and best vehicle of hidyat. However this should not lead to laymen criticizing other efforts as is the case with many. Ask them how many days did ml zakariya rh spend in tabligh? Also how many times did his student mufti Mahmood ul hasan gangohi rh go in jamaat or even ghust (jawla). Best thing would be to tolerate the statements of laymen and not worry about it too much. It is sad however when the elders of tabligh get involved in such things.

Agreed 100%. The thing about this Deen-e-Azeem (great Deen) is that it is the Middle Path. As was mentioned before about not exaggerating, it goes both ways. That is to say, we should also not exaggerate that we are talking about some deviant group, na`oodhu billaah (we seek refuge in Allaah).

From the same book which was referred to earlier:

so we are back to the old jihad is tabligh and nothing but tabligh - and tablighis are the real mujahideen.

even your tafseer of hadith and juggling of words still does not equate to tabligh. even your own explanation would mean dawah to the non muslims. which markaz sends jamaats to invite the non muslims?

jihad = dawah, so that means dawah = tabligh, so that means tabligh = tabligh jamaat.
thats how you people have gone from jihad to tabligh jamaat. what has happened to jihad = jihad?

is this about tabligh jamaat as well....?

Quote:
No deed equivalent to Jihad

Narrated Abu Huraira RadhiAllahu anhu, A man came to Allah's Apostle Salallahu-alaihiwasallam and said "Instruct me as to such a deed as equals Jihad (in reward)." He Salallahu-alaihiwasallam replied, "I do not find such a deed." Then he added, "Can you, while the Muslim fighter is in the battlefield, enter your Masjid to perform prayers without cease and fast and never break your fast?" The man said, "But who can do that?" Abu Huraira RadhiAllahu anhu added, "The Mujahid (i.e. Muslim fighter) is rewarded even for the footsteps of his horse while it wanders about (for grazing) tied on a long rope".
(Sahih Bukhari, p391, v.1).

jihad = 40 days jamaat?
muslim fighter = purana sathi?
battlefield = umumi ghusht?

am i doing it right?

Inna lillahi wa inna ilaihi rajiun

We're not back to the 'old jihad is tabligh and nothing but tabligh' because we never went there to begin with.

The replies related to the OPs questions were related to the concern the sahabah had for the hidayah of humanity, whether the conditions called for the spreading of Islam through preaching or from a military aspect, the maqsad is the same.

You seem to get unnerved when this issue is brought up, as if you're upset with the sources that were provided.

Chill out already.

The Holy Prophet SallalLahu-alayhi wasallam has said, "Know surely Jannah is in the shades of swords." (Paradise is under the shades of swords) (Saheeh Bukhari, Vol.1, p395)

swords = ball point pens used in tashkeel!

Salaams Hafiz-saba.

Jazak'Allah, for that narration, but I disagree. What's said in Adaba Gasht is that every Sahabi literally made it their sole objective in life to convey the ones of Allah to all corners of the glove.

I've studied the biographies of Khulafah Rashideen a little bit and I didn't read much of where either 4 of them (RA) sent out a Jamat to certain parts of the Arabian Peninsula to preach Tawheed. I'm with brother samah on this one, certainly not all Sahaba left their homes to this.

Please, none of the above. I'm tryin to get past that online.

It's observable to anyone online that you're in the forefront when these issues are discussed, many times without solid academic backing.

Do yourself a favor too and drop the mocking act with the two blessed efforts of deen. It's disrespectful...
