7 Steps to Becoming Debt-Free

by Moulana Muhammad ibn Moulana Haroon Abbasomar (D.B)

Many people, at some point in their lives end up in financial debt. Nobody likes it, but it just happens. Taking loans is perfectly permissible in Islam, as long as it doesn’t entail riba (usury) and it isn’t for a purpose that is against Islam.

Hereunder are seven ways to remove the noose of debt from our necks.

Du’as for the Fulfillment of Debts

1) Sayyidatuna Aishah (radiyallahu’anha) says: “Rasulullah (saw) would seek refuge from debts at the end of his Salah (i.e, before the salam). When he was asked about why he did it so frequently, Rasulullah (sallallahu’alaihi wasallam) said:

When a man falls in to debt, he speaks lies and breaches his promises.”
(Sahih Bukhari, hadith: 832& 2397)

The words of that du’a are:

اللّٰهُمَّ إني أعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ المأْثَمِ وَالمَغْرَم
Allahumma innee a’oodhu bika minal ma-thami wal maghram
O Allah! I seek your protection from sin and debts.

Note: If one cannot recite this before the salam, one could recite it after the salam with the hope that Allah Ta’ala accepts it.

2) Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) taught the following du’a to Sayyiduna Mu’ad ibn Jabal (radiyallahu’anhu) for removal of debts:

Allahumma Malikal Mulk, Tu-til Mulka man tasha-u watanzi’ul Mulka mimman tasha-u, wa tu’izzu man tasha-u, watudhillu mahtasha-u, biyadikal khairu innaka ‘ala kulli shai-in Qadeer.
Rahmanad Dunya wal Akhirati tu’tihima man tasha-u wa tamna’u minhuma man tasha-u irhamnee Rahmatan min ‘indik, tughni nee biha ‘an Rahmati man siwak

Translation: O Allah! possessor of the kingdom, You give the kingdom to whom You will, and You take the kingdom from whom You will, and You endow with honor whom You will. In Your Hand is all good. Verily, You are Able to do all things. You make the night to enter into the day, and You make the day to enter into the night (i.e. increase and decrease in the hours of the night and the day during winter and summer), You bring the living out of the dead, and You bring the dead out of the living. And You give wealth and sustenance to whom You will, without limit (measure or account). O Most Merciful of this world and the Hereafter, You give from them whatever You wish and You deprive whomsoever You wish. Shower upon me such mercy, which will make me independent from the mercy of those besides You.’

Rasulullah (saw) said to Sayyiduna Mu’adh (radiyallahu’anhu):

If you recite this du’a, your debts will be cleared even if they equal to mount Uhud.”
(al-Mu’jam al-saghir; see Majma’uz Zawa’id vol.10 pg.186).

Hafiz al-Haythami (rahimahullah) has classified its narrators as reliable and ‘Allamah Mundhiri (rahimahullah) has declared the chain as good. (Majma’uz Zawa’id vol.10 pg.186 & Targheeb, vol.2 pg.614)

In another narration, Rasulullah (sallallahu’alaihi wasallam) is reported to have taught a similar du’a to Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (radiyallahu’anhu). (Mustadrak Hakim, vol.1 pg.515) In a narration of Ibn Abi Shaybah, ‘Abdullah ibn Sabit says: Rasulullah (sallallahu’alaihi wasallam) would himself recite these words and give it great importance. (see Shaykh ‘Awwamah’s footnote on Majalis of Ibn Nasirud Deen, pg.201)

The words are:

Allahumma Farijal hammi Kashifal ghammi Mujeeba da’watil Mudtarreen, Rahmaanad Dunya wal Akhirati wa Raheemahuma irhamnil yawma Rahmatan wasi’atan tughni nee biha ‘ar Rahmati man siwak

3) Sayyiduna ‘Ali (radiyallahu’anu) said that Rasulullah (saw) prescribed the following du’a for the settling of debts:

اللهُمَّ اكْفِنِي بِحَلالِكَ عَنْ حَرامكْ، وَأَغْنِني بِفَضْلِكَ عَمَّنْ سِواك

‘Allahummak finee bi halalika an haramik wa aghninee bi fadhlika amman siwak.’

Translation: O Allah! Let the Halal things you provide suffice me from haram, and by Your Grace, keep me independent from all besides You.

(Sunan Tirmidhi – Imam Tirmidhi rahimahullah has classified this narration as hasan (sound) – hadith 3563.)

4) In a narration of Sunan Abi Dawud, Sayyiduna Abu Sa’eed (radiyallahu ‘anhu) reported that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam) taught an Ansari Sahabi the following du’a for the repayment of his overwhelming debts:

اللهُمَّ إنّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الهَمِّ والْحَزَن، وأعوذ بك مِنَ الْعَجزِ وَالكَسل، وأغوذ بك من الجُبْنِ والبُخْل، وأعوذ بك مِنْ غَلَبَةِ الدَّينوَقَهْرِ الرجال

Allahumma innee a’oodhu bika minal hammi wal hazan, wa a’oodhu bika minal ajzi wal kasl, wa a’oodhu bika minal jubni wa bukhl, wa a’oodhu bika min ghalabatid dayn wa qahrir rijal.

Translation: O Allah! I seek refuge in You from worries and difficulty, and I seek refuge in You from inability and laziness, and I seek refuge in You from cowardice and miserliness, and I seek refuge in You from the dominance of debt and being subjected to man.

Note: This du’a should be recited morning and evening.
(Abu Dawud, hadith 1550)

5) Recite abundantly:

Laa Hawla walaa quwwata illa billah

(Sunan Tirmidhi and Mustadrak Hakim, see Targheeb, vol.2 pgs.444 & 617)

Repentance
6) Abundant Istighfar (seeking forgiveness) is also a potent way to remove financial and other worries. (surah Nuh, Ayah: 10-11)

Rasulullah (saw) has said: “Whoever steadily recites istighfar (like the words: Astaghfirullah) will find Allah creating ease for him from every difficulty and relief from every worry and Allah will provide sustenance for him from where he cannot fathom”

(Sunan Abi Dawud, hadith: 1513. Imam Hakim has declared this narration as sahih-authentic- see Targheeb, vol.2, pg.617)

Intention
7) Most important is one’s intention to repay the debt. The hadith promises Allah’s help for those who sincerely want to settle their debts. (Sahih Bukhari, Hadith: 2387, also see Targheeb, vol.2 pg.598)

May Allah Ta’ala keep us all debt free. Ameen.

An Inspirational true story happened to a Qur’aan teacher in Egypt & narrated by her colleague to her students

A Qur’aan teacher always advised her students to live by this aayah:
وَعَجِلْتُ إِلَيْكَ رَبِّ لِتَرْضَى
“and I hastened to You, O my Lord, that You might be pleased.”
[soorah TaaHaa, v:84]

She told them, “This aayah is what moves me. When I hear the Adhaan and I’m in occupied and the middle of something, I remind myself of this aayah and so I get up to pray.”
“When my alarm goes off at 2:00 am (Tahajjud) and I want to go back to sleep I remember: “and I hastened to You, O my Lord, that You might be pleased” and so I get up.

Her husband had the following arrangement with her: on his way home from work he would call her so she will get the food hot & ready; so he can come home and eat & sleep.

One day he asked her to make Mahshi (stuffed grape leaves with rice – very time consuming. You wrap many of them and put the pot of them on the stove to cook).
She had 3 more to wrap then she had to put them on the stove to cook.

But the Adhaan came in…
So she left the 3 remaining grape-leaves (which would have taken her 5 minutes) and went to pray.

Her husband kept calling & calling but there was no answer. He came home and found her in Sujood and food not ready. He saw there were only 3 grape-leaves left. So he was upset & said:
“You could have just finished them & put the pot to cook then pray!”
No response.
He went to her to discover she had died in her Sujood!

SubhaanAllaah, had she waited like any of us to “finish whats in her hand”, she would have died in the kitchen!
But a person dies upon what they lived on and by, & they are resurrected on what they died on.

(*)
Prophet (saw) said : “‘Every person will be resurrected in the manner that he died.’” (1)
Resolution: (*)

Let’s make a resolution:
*For sisters, leave everything, get up & pray as soon as the adhaan calls in, [maximum after 20 minutes (iqaamah time)]

Abdullaah narrated: “I asked the Prophet (saw) :“Which deed is the dearest to Allaah?”
He replied, “To offer the prayers at their early stated fixed times.” (2)

*For brothers, as soon as you hear the Adhaan, do wudoo’ & go to the Masjid.
keep reminding yourself:
“and I hastened to You, O my Lord, that You might be pleased.”

* True story shared by a sister, who also suggested the resolution.

May Allaah accept it from her and may it be a source of sadaqah-e-Jaariyah for her. Aameen

A man from the Salaf went to his friend’s house, so his friend came out and said, “What has come of you?” He said, “I am four hundred Dirhams in debt”.

His friend went inside the house, measured money on the scale, and gave it to him. He returned to his house crying so his wife said to him, “Couldn’t you have excused yourself being that it causes you such hardship?”

He said: “Rather, I am crying because If I had inquired about his situation beforehand, he would have not needed to come and ask!”

"Shouldn't I reward such a man?"

Ibn Al-Jawzi (rahimahu Allah) said:

And we have narrated about a man who sought permission to enter upon the judge of judges, Ibn Abi Dawood. The man said: “Tell him it’s Abu Ja’far at the door”. When he heard this, he shook and said, “Allow him in!”.

The man walked in and Ibn Abi Dawood stood up, greeted him and offered his kindness, gave him five thousand, and then bade him farewell.

It was said to him: “You do this with a common person?!”

He said: “I was once poor and he was a friend of mine. I went to him one time and told him: ‘I am hungry’. He said to me: ‘Sit down’. He left and came back with grilled food, sweets, and bread. He said: ‘Eat’. I said to him: ‘Eat with me’. He said, ‘No’. I said: ‘By Allah, I will not eat unless you eat with me’. So when he ate, blood fell from his mouth. I said to him: ‘What is this?‘ He replied: ‘Sickness‘. I said: ‘By Allah, you must tell me‘. He said: ‘When you came to me, I did not own anything, and my teeth was covered with a strip of gold, so I removed it and sold it’.

Shouldn’t I reward such a man?!”

Difficulties in life: How to remove them, "simple to do list"

There is tarteeb(way/ style) of Allaah taala, and we MUST observe HIS tarteeb to gain success in this life and hereafer. So there is tarteeb(way) of Allaah and you cannot change it. If you want good in this life you must have to do these things.
--taken from bayaan of Maulana Shaykh Zulfiqar Ahmed Naqshbandi (db).

1. If you want to improve your haalaat(condition/situation), you must improve your aamaal(good deeds).

2. If you want to improve your relationship with people, you must first work on strengthening your relationship with Allaah Taala.

3. If you want your worldly condition to be fine and good, you must have to work on improving your akhirat(Hereafter)

So to gain the benefits in this world and lead a joyous life, these points are must.

Why does we have all the problem in the first place??
It is lack of barakat(there is no english word for barakat) in our life. So it is essential that we gain barakat in all our affairs.

What is barakat??

To understand it take this example, if you are doing some business with all the fine qualities and everything is in place and all the conditions are met, and yet not getting success, this is a fine example of not having barakat. Another example is, if you have enough money and yet not sufficient for you, it is also lacking in barakat. A single penny with barakat in it is better than millions of dollars without barakah.

So now back to point how to gain barakat in all our affairs.

Simple to do list:

1. Attain Taqwa, that is abstain from sinning. And doing good deeds.

2. Zikr of Allaah. Start all your work with Bismillaah, use it abundantly. Like when standing say Bismillaah, when sitting say Bismillaah, when eating say Bismillaah, when doing anything and everything say Bismillaah. Saying Bismillaah is literally asking for Allaah's barakat.
And also daily zikr tasbeeh for morning and evening. 100 x Durood and 100 x Istighfaar.

3. Dua: Ask Allaah taala, because Allaah likes to be asked and HE dislike a person who does not ask. So ask him for anything and everything. It is in some hadith, i don't recall it totally that Prophet SAW said, Ask Allaah even for lace of your shoe. (approximately)

4. Get Dua: Yes very very important. Often we say people to make dua for us, that it is good and adviced. But what is more important is get dua from people without you asking from them. How??. Simple, do good to them, do there work, do khidmat of them. Help lost people, drop some one to there home, cross road for blind, pick luggage of people, lots of thing you can do gain dua. Most important is your parents, there dua will take you out from deep deep pits, so do lots of khidmat of your parents. There is hadith in which Prophet Muhammad say, If you find your parents in old age, do khidmat of them and go to paradise (approximate)

5. Tilawat Quran: Do tilawat of Quran daily and in your home. Without fail. Allaah's Qitab is full of Barakah.

6. Hajj and umraah: IT brings barakat in ones life.

What takes away barakat:

1. Bad intention: Bad intention is an evil thing it eats away barakat.
And also negative thinking takes away barakat, so stop negative thinking.

2. Sin: This closes the door of barakat. When the door is closed, you will not get any barakat, so open this door with lots sincere istighfaar.

3. Badnazari(Looking at non mehram) and Bepardagi(No haya/shame and hijaab): Yes these are eaters of barakat, stop it immediately to lead a joyous and pakeeza life. Lead a life of hijaab and haya, and see how your life change.

In a different lecture I heard Shaykh Zulfiqar Ahmed Naqshbandi (db) mention concerning the same buzurg Babuji Abdullah that due to abundant recitation of Durood Shareef he had acquired a particular blessing if he made dua that such and such individual should be blessed with a ziyarah of the Best of all Creation then that person would definitely see the Prophet in a dream.

Concern for the Ummah…

“Hadhrat Maulana Ilyas Sahib رحمة الله عليه ( Reviver of Tabligh ) got up at night and spent the entire night pacing to and fro saying , ” oh dear ! What will I do?”

His wife woke up and asked , ” what is the matter? Are you in pain? What is the difficulty ?”

He said to her , ” O servant of اَللَّه سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعالى get up and cry before اَللَّه سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعالى so that there may be four eyes weeping. I have seen rivers of the ummah’s blood flowing . This is my worry.”.

Today we ought to ponder about how much we share of the concern with which Nabi صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ came to this world.

What to think when repenting...

When making istighfaar, imagine that you are completely soiled with sins from my head to feet. By making istighfaar, your sins are slowly being washed away.

Imagine a person sitting with a dirty cloth under the tap and as he is washing it, it is slowly getting cleaned. In the same way by making istighfaar, slowly my sins are being washed away and my heart is being cleansed

(Mufti Mahmood Gangohi Rahmatullah Alaih)

May Allah give us all the taufeek/ability to make more and more Istighfaar and to leave this world without any sins, plus you'll notice changes in your other affairs with the more repentance you make.

The Angel of Death has been assigned to You!

It is narrated that ‘Uthmân bin Affânرضي الله عنه – said in a sermon:

Son of Adam! Know that the angel of death who has been assigned to you has not ceased to pass you and move on to others, ever since you have been in this world.

But it is as if he is about to pass someone else and move on to target you, so be careful and prepare for him (by correcting your deeds).

And do not forget him, for he does not forget you.

And know o son of Adam, if you are heedless about yourself and do not prepare, no one else will prepare for you.

You must meet Allah the Mighty and Majestic, so take for yourself and do not leave it to someone else. Peace be on you.

“O Allah, I beseech You for abiding faith, a fearful heart, true belief, and the right religion. I beg of You safety from all mishaps, full and lasting protection, and gratitude for that protection. I seek from You freedom from dependance on other people.”) - (Ali ibn Abi Talib, Kanz al'-Ummal #5055)

(Transliteration: “Allahumma inni as'aluka imanan da'ima(n), wa as'aluka qalban khashi'a(n), wa as'aluka 'ilman nafi'a(n), wa as'aluka yaqinan sadiqa(n), wa as'aluka dinan qayyima(n), wa as'alukal-'afiyata min kulli baliyya(tin), wa as'aluka tamamal-'afiya(ti), wa as'aluka dawamal-'afiya(ti), wa as'alukash-shukra 'alal-'afiya(ti) wa as'alukal-ghina 'anin-nas(i).”)

This was the Dua of Sayyidna Abu Dharr al-Ghifari According to a hadith, Angel Jibrail (AS) said that Abu Dharr رضي الله عنه was more well-known amongst the angels than he was among the people of the world because of this Dua. He further said, whoever makes this Dua twice a day, all of his sins will be forgiven and he will be called to enter Paradise through whichever door he wished. SubhanAllah!

All night, a man called “Allah”
Until his lips were bleeding.
Then the Devil said, “Hey! Mr Gullible!
How comes you’ve been calling all night
And never once heard Allah say, “Here, I am”?
You call out so earnestly and, in reply, what?
I’ll tell you what. Nothing!”
The man suddenly felt empty and abandoned.
Depressed, he threw himself on the ground
And fell into a deep sleep.
In a dream, he met Abraham, who asked,
“Why are you regretting praising Allah?”
The man said, “ I called and called
But Allah never replied, “Here I am.”
Abraham explained, “Allah has said,
“Your calling my name is My reply.
Your longing for Me is My message to you.
All your attempts to reach Me
Are in reality My attempts to reach you.
Your fear and love are a noose to catch Me.
In the silence surrounding every call of “Allah”
Waits a thousand replies of “Here I am.”
