Though the clapton community is quite sadly far behind even many basic masjids, that specific jumma collection issue i dont think ive come across at any deo/guji masjid...i mean dedicating 1 jummas collection per month for events/etc (btw far as i know its just 1 main talk per month for brothers and 1 for sisters they do...nothing in terms of classes, services etc) in guji/deo masjid is unheard of. im sure if it was suggested at any other the elderly Members of the masjids trust will go bonkers :-(

molana khalil's doing good there. i think as long as the communities needs are being met (or trying to be met) inshallah should be a good thing...which doesnt necessarily have to be from within the masjids walls.

example. though i have my buckets full of issues wrt to the Quba/Cazenove Rd community... more or less next door to each other they have:

www.masjidequba.org.uk (classes, events etc)
www.nlmcc.org.uk (social needs)
www.nlmcc.org.uk/ihsan-nursery (full on sure start centre)
www.nlmha.com (looks after housing needs of local muslims...manages about nearly 700 properties)
www.tawhid.org.uk (starting out from using the Masjid in its first 1-2 years)
www.olivehackney.com (run from the masjid site at present)
www.nawaal.org (helps muslims in financial difficulties...and sometimes non-muslims too)
www.fostercarelink.com (muslims kids adoption)
Tayyibah Grils School

though not run by the community theres also two buildings close by that house mainly 90% muslim women and children suffering from domestic abuse/violence. run by www.refuge.org.uk..mostly all muslim women work there (including sisters from our community)

..of course plenty room for improvement (miles more!)

shoot me down all you want, but this is what i have experienced myself (in the UK) and many of my close family and friends will concur.

it seems that some deeni muslims, mainly those attached to sub group of muslims, e.g tablighis, sufis, ulama, students etc, only see deen to be in worshipping allah and carrying out the duties dictated by whichever group they are in. they hardly ever expand into serving allah through serving his creation and helping individuals who are in need. they will back charities and collect money, clothing, etc, but will hardly 'get their hands dirty' by helping a needy muslim (or even non muslim) directly.

it is as if they deem it to be beneath themselves to directly help a homeless person, or an old person, or a disabled person, or a struggling single mother etc. i have seen more of a zeal to serve the creation of allah from individuals who would not be regarded as particularly deeni. they may not be wearing the full sunnah, or have a full beard, they may not be in the masjid for every salaat, or seen finishing qurans after qurans in ramadhan.

not so long ago a masjid opened up near me. people were required to help in working on and cleaning the masjid prior to opening. most of the people that contributed their time and skills for free were those who you would not regard as deeni. in fact one of the plasterers who contributed his time and skills for free can usually be found in the local pub in the evenings. the other plasterers who look and act deeni did it to get paid.

sorry about the rant. yes i know this is not always the case, but i have seen and experienced some truth in this.
