A question sent to an shaykh of hakeem akhtar's silsila

I am writing this letter to enquire about the asbaaq and azkaar of the akhtari silsila. I know that beginners are given 100x isme zaat (ALLAH) and 100x nafi ithbaat (Laillahaillah), 1 para (juz 1/30) tilawat of quraan shareiff, somedurood (salawat/prayer upon Rasul sallahualahuwaslama (very light) and istighfaar (forgiveness). I am being told by some brothers that in this silsila, the zikr doesn't increase more than this as the focus is in abstaining from sin.

Can this be confirmed by shaykh as it generally known that chistis do the famous Bara Tasbih, Paas-E-Anfaas (breath zikr, not the definition that
we should guard our breath from sin, but the shagal) and later move onto zikr-e-khafi and some muraqabah (mayyit & maut)

Canthis humble servant has an answer for this question. I am asking as i am bayt in the silsila and have some confusions regarding the lessons in
this silsila.

Wa 'Alayum Assalaam,

May Allah keep you and your family in 'aafiyat as well. Your dua's are very much appreciated.

Similar to how more or less every mufti is entitled to their own opinion regarding a final verdict in external fiqh based off of the principles of their particular school of practice, i.e. Hanafi, Shafi'i, etc, a shaykh also is entitled to tweak and fine tune the practices of his tariqah based off of the principles set by the shuyookh of prior times. Within the Chishti Silsilah, there are various subgroups. For example, we are part of the Chishti silsilah overall, then part of the Imdadiya silsilah. The imdiadiya branches off into the Gangohi silsilah and the Thanwi silsilah. In that we are part of the Thanwi silsilah. The Thanwi Silsilah then branches off into whatever focus the respected khulafa have focused on. They all focus on zikr, but there are other aspects of zikr and social conduct which is given more attention than others. Some focus more on reformation of financial dealings comparatively more, while others on social dealings more. Our Beloved Shaykh ul 'Arab Wal 'Ajam Hazratwala (RA) drank from many rivers of the Thanwi sea, and infused them into his own stream. Our focus is on zikr katheer, the minimum of which is 100x of whatever zikr your shaykh has mentioned. It can increase from 100 or even decrease depending on the situation and state of the person (mureed) as the shaykh deems fit. Our Hazratwala (RA) has chosen to include the 13 (commonly known as the 12 tasbeehat) tasbeehaat in his islahi schedule for his mureeds. This has been adopted for numerous reasons, practicality and feasibility being the main ones. People have less time and less physical and mental strength than those who came before us. Hazratwala (RA) realized that quality is worth more than quantity. The name of Allah taken once with complete devotion is superior to the name of Allah taken a thousand times void of devotion, which may be done merely to complete a duty. The number of times the azkaar regardless of what they given to as prescribed to you by your shaykh is to be given preference.

Whatever you are being told by "some brothers" should be clarified by discussing it directly with your own shaykh. Do not let what "some brothers" get to you. The roads to reaching Allah are many and most are valid, however, we cannot jump from highway to highway to get to the final destination. Stick to whichever highway you feel the most munasabat with and invest yourself fully in that. The focus of the Akhtari silsilah is on many things, of which an important aspect is leaving and abstaining from sin. But that is not the only focus as there are others as well.

Please do not compare between the practices of the various sislsilahs such as between Chishti and Naqshbandi etc. This will only complicate matters within your mind and confuse you further. As a mureed, you should not be expecting anything. You should contact your own shaykh and implement whatever he advises you to do. The term Akhtari, Thanwi, Chishti, and Naqshbandi etc are labels which are not important. I have only used them to simply clarify the matter for you, otherwise I do not use these myself because it gives the notion of "us" and "them, while every pious, shari'ah-following tariqah is ours and we are a part of them. Practice according to the label you may fall under, but the widespread usage of these labels has never really brought about any real, visible, and practical benefit.

I realize I may not have answered your question in the manner that you perhaps were looking and I apologize for that. My sincerest apologies for the delay in replying to your email as well. Due to various personal reasons, I was unable to reply on time, and I hope that your forgive me for that.

May Allah fulfill all your maqasid hasanah.

First of all ,the one who wrote the original letter should know that the time for such 'confusions' as he puts it,is before bayat and not after it.Secondly giving so much importance to such trivial things as the method or the numbers of Dhikr etc means this person is giving more importance to فروعى issues rather than concentrating on 'Usool'....and finally having a Shaikh already...and still asking such questions from some one other than his own Shaikh means a 'vote of no confidence' against his Shaikh.Usually such mureeds prove to be a complete failure in Sulook ( May Allah save him)...even if he is asking for the sake of academic curiosity,he is still indulging in لا يعنى ( unnecessary things) and is therefore prone to many mistakes.

The khalifa sahib db gave a perfect reply,to summarise Hazrat,s reply :

1) Every Shaikh is entitled to make his own mamoolat for his mureeds...(I would go a step further and say that a Shaikh who can not do ejtehad in 'Fan e Sulook' is not a perfect Shaikh)...and it is very much possible that a Shaikh suggest one Mamool for one mureed and another for another mureed....and no mamool at all for the third mureed except faraedh. So there can not be/should not be one nisab (course) for all...Sulook is not a 'teacher- student relationship'....it is a 'doctor-patient relationship',where a doctor can (and do) write completely different prescriptions for apparently similar symptoms.

2)The Azkar and asghal keep changing with time...just like methods of physical treatment keep changing. The routines adopted by Khwaja Moeenuddin chishti ra were different from the routines of Shaikh Abdul Quddos Gangohi ra....and the same is true about the difference in the Mamoolat of Khwaja Bahauddin naqshband ra and Shaikh Ahmad Sarhindi ra.

3) The Shaikh rightly mentions in his post the "focus is on Zikre Kaseer" and that "the quality is more important than the quantity". Moulana Room ra writes it in his own style "Bar zuban tasbeeh dar dil Gao khar---Ein chuni tasbeeh ke darad asar" ( You have tasbeeh on your lips but your mind is wandering, how can such a tasbeeh have any effect ?)...although our Akabir has politely and respectfully made some correction saying : Ein chuni tasbeeh hum darad asar ( Even this kind of tasbeeh has its effects) but by and large it is true that what counts in Sulook are two things (a) concentration in Zikr with Ikhlas and (b) regularity in mamool....numbers come later.

4) The Shaikh rightly points out the mistake of the salik about listening to some one other than his own Shaikh. You know I am not a big supporter of 'tauheed e matlab'....but I do support ONE SHAIKH IN ONE TIME....although one may not necessarily stick to one Shaikh for life...one May or may not take faiz from many mashaikh depending on his aptitude and appetite.( In our Akabir Ml Ali mian ra had more than one mashaikh, same goes for Hazrat Sufi Iqbal ra...even Ml Ashraf Ali a Thanvi ra briefly took faiz from his Uncle while Haji sahib ra was alive).TAUHEEDE matlab is an administrative issue not a deeni issue,However as long as you are with one Shaikh,it is in your own interest and mental peace to 'restrict' yourself to him only.

5) and finally the Shaikh writes about one of the basic issues which troubles even those salikeen who are otherwise very 'wise'..,,the issue of at least some degree of prejudice towards one silsilsa.I agree that one naturally loves his father more than his uncles ( though he loves both)...still in many cases one feels a sort of 'ghuloo' towards the methods of one silsila or the other; This attitude is completely uncalled for...as all the methods and numbers are no more than 'tools'...and tools are used 'as and when' required...,and therefore keep changing according to the situation at hand.

So ,the learned Shaikh has already very beautifully explained that the silsila of Hakeem Akhtar ra is strict on usool but relaxed in فروعى issues. What else do you want ?

BTW,Hzrat Hakeem Akhtar sb ra has written a booklet on "TAZKIA NAFS" which can easily be called the routines of his silsila. It contains Zikr Jahr,Zikre Qalbi...even sultan ul azkar and Muraqiba......all the fancy stuff you are looking for :)

The summary of what Hazrat Hakim Akhtar ra writes in his booklet 'Dastoor e Tazkiae nafs' is as follows :

Daily one hour or more for the following :

1)Daily two Rak'at صلواة التوبه keeping sins and past mistakes in mind and doing tauba from it...then two Rakat صلواة الحاجت with the intention of requesting success in the struggle for tazkia.

2) Tilawat...as much as one can easily do.

3) Zikr Jahr Nafi wal Isbat 500 times,in a way that with لا اله remove every thing other than Allah swt from Qalb ...and with الا الله striking the love of Allah into Qalb.

4) Zikr Isme Zat الله with slight dharb and Jahr (1000) times.

5) Muraqiba that 'Allah swt is بصير and خبير and is watching me and all my actions all the time'.

6) Hazrat Shaikh has written a script to be read daily about evil glances on na mahram.

7) A similar passage about the 'bad use of Qalb' meaning all imaginary sins...the sins we do in Fantasy.

8) Muraqiba of عذاب جهنم in detail

9) A detailed consideration of the blessings of Allah swt on the Human race, this blessed umma and on us individually, and thanking Allah swt from the depth of heart(مراقبه شكر)

10) Muraqiba of death...and how the Rooh will be presented to Allah swt without body....and dua for 'husne khatima'

11)Isme Zat الله saying in imagination...as if every cell of the body is repeating this blessed Ism....and then every particle of creation reciting the same name (سلطان الأذكار)

Forgive me if this is too off-topic, but does anyone here know where to download the Arabic books of Maulana Sahib (rahmatu-llaahi `alayh)? Apparently, they used to be on the website (link), but they aren't there anymore.

See here also (link).

Jazaaka-llaahu khayran. I was specifically looking for the Arabic books but this is also helpful. I think some of these books are also on the website mentioned in my earlier post.
