Saudi Arabia Bans 50 Names: Yet Another Fabrication

According to articles in Alriyadh and Arab News, Saudi Arabia's Ministry of the Interior denied releasing any statement banning the 50 names that went viral at the end of last week. When I tried tracing the story back to its source, it seemed to follow the same pattern as the Mars One fatwa that never was and so many other crazy fatwa stories: An online English newspaper in the region reports something really crazy and outlandish that happened in Arabic that is then copied almost verbatim by other newspapers without verification. Reporters and readers need to be suspicious whenever something public occurs in the Arab world and in Arabic, yet does not get reported in Arabic media until after it has first gone viral in English. They need to be even more suspicious when all the reports tie back to the same single English report without providing any additional verification or corroboration. The general rule I try to follow for myself is to be suspicious of anything reported on public matters unless the event was reported in the original language by at least two unrelated sources - both before the story become popular.

Edit: Another examples of fake fatwas created by the media. Last week many 'reputable' newspaper agencies put up articles saying Saudi Arabia banned 50 names, which included common names, a huge uproar was created. But now the Saudi Ministry has revealed the truth that it didn't happen. The above article by shaykh Musa Furber explains it.

I never comprehend the Mars fatwa, like WTH? that's just too ridiculous to be true. Wasn't Qur'an itself challenged the jama'ah of men and jinn to travel across the skies and earth? Suraa Ar-Rahmaan 33 : " O assembly of the jinn and the men! If you are able to pass through the regions of the heavens and the earth, then pass through; you cannot pass through but with power."

Saudi fatwa factory really makes Islam and muslims a laughing stock for the world. >:-(

Parents cannot give their newly-born babies the following names: Malak, Abdul Ati, Abdul Nasser, Abdul Mosleh, Nabi, Nabiya, Emir, Somu, Al-Mamlaka, Malika, Mamlaka, Tabaraka, Nardeen, Maya, Linda, Randa, Basmalah, Tuleen, Arm, Nareej, Rital, Als, Sandi, Rama, Maleen, Eleen, Alas, Ainar, Loran, Malkiteena, Lareen, Kibriyal, Laureen, Binyameen, Narees, Yara, Sitaf, Aileen, Loland, Tilaj, Barah, Abdul Nabi, Abdul Rasool, Jibreel, Abdul Mo'een, Abrar, Milak, Aiman, Bayan, Baseel and Rilam.

Then what about the Salafi da'ee Shaykh Ahmad Musa Jibril? Ha!
Even an Al Qaeda terrorist jailed in here some years ago had name Abu Jibril.

Name "Maya", "Linda", "Sandi" are extremely common here. On what base they ban some names like Laureen? Bayan? Aileen?

There is nothing wrong with Mars Fatwa. The MarsOne mission is a very stupid and dangerous mission. There is no garuntee you will live.

Check the MarsOne website, it mentions:
" This is the foundation upon a mission must be built, where human lives are at risk with each flight. Once on Mars, there are no means to return to Earth."

If you read more you ll see that, Mars One Foundation aims to put non-scientist, non-engineer astronauts on Mars permanently to establish a colony.

The Fatwa is against the dangerous MarsOne mission. This is the actual fatwa:
"Based on the texts, it is not permissible to travel to Mars and never to return if life is not possible there and the expectation of death is more than the possibility of life, due to this action exposing one to self-destruction,"
Source: www.thenational.ae/uae/science/uae-islamic-affairs-author...

We Muslims are our own biggest enemies at the moment. We do not cross check what is being propagated in the biased media. There is nothing wrong with the above fatwa, actually it makes a lot of sense.

Jazakallah khair for clarifying. I thought it was another silly fatwa that said that "in general, space travel is haraam" (I have heard such ridiculous fatwa issue, many years before the MarsOne -- saying that no muslim should travel to outer space because they won't be able to establish salaah etc in space, so I thought this is similar thing!)

Actually space travel is not really in par with Islamic path. Its spending million or even billions of dollars to put a person in space. All this for what? Obscure mindless experiments. What have we achieved by stepping foot on the Moon or sending a robot to Mars? The only good thing about it, I can think of is the satellites that help in telecommunications. Don't forget We have to answer to Allah Ta'ala for each penny spent in this Dunya.

May Allah Ta'ala protect us from the fitna of the modern world. ameen.

Quote:
The Ministry of Interior has denied releasing any statement banning 50 names, which went viral on social media websites, and said any name can be used as long as it abides by Civil Status laws.

Story:
Saudi Arabia's interior ministry has banned 50 given names including "foreign" names, names related to royalty and those it considers to be blasphemous.

Saudis will no longer be able to give their children names such as Amir (prince), Linda or Abdul Nabi (Slave of the Prophet) after the civil affairs department at the ministry issued the list, according to Saudi news sites.

It justified the ban by saying that the names either contradicted the culture or religion of the kingdom, or were foreign, or "inappropriate".

The names fit into at least three categories: those that offend perceived religious sensibilities, those that are affiliated to royalty and those that are of non-Arabic or non-Islamic origin.

A number of other names appear that do not necessarily fit into any category and it is therefore unclear as to why they would have been banned. Names such as Abdul Naser and Binyamin are not found to be particularly offensive to Muslims. Binyamin is believed in Islam to be the son of Prophet Jacob (Yaqoub) (PBUH) and the full brother of Prophet Joseph (PBUH), but it also happens to be the name of the Israeli prime minister. Abdul Naser, similarly, is the name of the famous Arab nationalist ruler of Egypt, who was at odds with Saudi Arabia.

Names such as Abdul Nabi and Abdul Hussain, common among Shiites and some Sunni Arabs, are controversial because of the multiple ways in which they can be interpreted. Abdul in Arabic means "worshipper of" or "slave of", while Nabi means "prophet" and Rasool means "messenger". Those who oppose such names argue that Abdul means "worshipper of' and is therefore forbidden as only God can be worshipped. Most Muslim names with Abdul carry one of God's 99 Islamic names. Abdul Rahman, for example, comes from the name Al Rahman.

Another set of names that is banned includes those that have to do with royalty, especially titles such as Sumuw (highness), Malek (king) and Malika (Queen) and other royal terms such as Al Mamlaka (the kingdom).

Some of the names on the list are not uncommon among Arabs, including Malak (angel), Amir (prince), Abdul Naser and Jibreel (Gabriel).

Names banned in Saudi Arabia:

Malaak (angel)
Abdul Aati
Abdul Naser
Abdul Musleh
Nabi (prophet)
Nabiyya (female prophet)
Amir (prince)
Sumuw (highness)
Al Mamlaka (the kingdom)

no, akhi. the earth population is waaay too dense, hence the earth scientists are thinking a way how to just get rid some of them by emigrating them to other planets in the name of "high-end civilization and technology" if they're able to :D.

hehehehe :p

Apologies for being off topic,

But who ever posted such a fatwa...

Quote:
saying that no muslim should travel to outer space because they won't be able to establish salaah etc in space

....Should be questioned as to Why can't we pray from space?

Allah is Lord of ALL THE WORLD'S if we get to space and it doesn't cost us anything and is done in a halal manner, surely we just face earth since Qiblah is in that direction!
