If this story is correct,even then it does not apply to every one......

The Shaikh might have found some signs of 'IJTIBA' in that particular mureed,so he had the impression that Allah swt will not leave him without performing Fardh salat,hence the advise to leave Fardh....otherwise it would be a sin for a Shaikh to give such advise and for mureed to follow it.

It is wise not to give importance to such stories though.For us common people what is written in Quran,Hadeeth and Fiqh are the things to follow....and Tasawwuf from a Shaikh,who is a scholar ( if Allah swt grant us taufeeq ).

There are several zikrullah prescribed in ahadis but a shaykh tells us a few ones which are more suitable for us.
It's our duty that we should perform the prescribed zikr punctually. Then, InshaAllah, we'll be benefited.
