You should ask respected Mufti why he considers it Haram and what's the Daleel for it.

Just to update, this is called Nameemah and is included amongst the other sins of Nameemah.

To be frank, the reply didn't really answer the question. The general statement of Cricket as Haraam as "prostitution, indulgence in liquor, gambling" is another matter altogether.

@everyone: We all know what backbiting is so why must we dissect and anatomize it so deeply?

One of the reasons for the punishment of the Banu Israeel was the excessive questioning of the most obvious and common things (Found in various Tafaseer)

PS. Football, cricket, darts and even a simple sport such as bowling "CAN" be Haraam. So can using a phone be Haraam but you won't call a mobile phone Haraam. Halaal & Haraam is unquestioned when it's clear cut but many times it's circumstantial and we should stay away from generalising as it's turning Deen into a mockery

Does your circumstances allow? ( generaly spekin, dnt know bot your circumstnces)

Brother Imam ali, its betr if u personally ask your queatiom from some authentic mufti Sahab, if it was a sin then one should repent. If not Alhamdulillah...

Then Mufti Isma'il Moosa's answer is clear, that can be followed.

Unfortunately that's not obvious to everyone.
And with all due respect, it can be common for you but not for everyone.
Brother Imam Ali's concept of ghiba is completely different than mine! I didn't even imagine that there could be difference of opinion about the concept of ghiba.

That makes sense.

Mufti A.S. Desai consider Cricket haram cos he considers it the sports of kuffar. But I don't think all Ulamah consider it haram right? I too didn't thought it could be haram.

This is first time I asked him (I asked about ghiba).

some things seemed strange to me. Like playing Cricket being haram, and when I posted my first Q , he told me this:

''From the nom de plume you are using we have inferred that you are a female. Firstly, it is wrong to use Mariah Al-Qibtiyyah (radhiyallahu anha) as an e-mail address. She was the Consort of Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam). By using her name as an e-mail address, you are showing disrespect to Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam). We trust that you will change your e-mail address.''

I asked him to explain me why and how it is wrong to use this name so that I can understand, he has not replied that Q yet.

I'll follow him in matters where other Muftiyan agree with him.

Maybe you misunderstood.
Gheebah = backbiting
Backbiting is backbiting and does not require 7 pages of posts to understand (referring to this thread).

To speak about someone with the intention to slander or damage the reputation of the individual in their absence is Gheebah. Whether the statement is true or not.

The above is the only form of backbiting. There is no concept. It's like saying my concept of "green" might be different to your concept. Green is green.

You can also check up as many definitions as required online and all will state around the same. So if you say it might not be common to some then I recommend first learning the meaning of the word before going so deep into the meaning that every possible act becomes Gheebah.

Important note: this reply is only clarifying my other post. It's not to say you're the one indulging into this subject. It's what I see every day from many (on and offline)

You're right.
what I meant to say brother, what I thought to be ghiba brother Imam Ali says thats not ghiba.
e.g: He says it's not ghiba to describe some's bad deeds in their absence if we don't insult or ridicule the person. It seemed strange to me cos I always thought it is ghiba, there should be valid shar'i reason to describe others wrongdoings. Thats why I asked mufti so that I can know where I'm wrong.

Thats just one example, there're also other examples in this thread where he differs.

There are definite Adab and etiquettes in Islam for the Mustafti (asking the question) and Mufti (responding to the question).

  1. Mustafti should know HOW  to ask a question
  2. Mufti should know HOW  to seek clarification or get the details and to defer matters to local Ulama or to be prepared to say "Laa Adri"

P.S: Most people will either not understand this or dislike or take it as a criticism on "Ulama" of their choice which it most certainly isn't!

Sometimes you really have to use your head before you go running for Fatwaa seeking.

Sayyida Khadeeja (RA) was most beloved to Nabi (Sallallaho Alaihe Wassallam), why? It is an established emphatic fact that Nabi (Sallallaho Alaihe Wassallam) used to console and confide in his wife when he felt the pain of the disbelivers of Makkah, was he doing Gheebah?

In the West employement laws call for affirmative action on bullying, harrasment, intimidation etc so these matters need to be reported to HR! is it doing Gheebah?

If someone is disrespecting, bullying you on MS or you don't like a post your report it and almost all the time the writer is unware of your reporting of the post! is it doing Gheebah?

Good points brother, Muadh. Indeed, we shouldn't take narrations at face value and explain a situation in full before the Ulema and then listen/read attentively to the response in accordance with the daleel i.e Qu'ran and Sunnah. Then the choice is entirely ours.

I disagree watching cricket is haram since I've been bowled for a golden duck by scholars. :D

You need to understand everyone can't have same knowledge, experience, or understanding specially for the beginners like me to understand even these things. So whenever or whatever question comes to my head, I'll ask for fatwah!

No it's not ghiba. No one in this thread ever said that these things could be ghiba.

You don't need major knowledge to be able to write down a question correctly, firstly.

Secondly, you need to be to analyse the Fatwa and then analyse the repurcussions, for example:

  1. Reporting a post to Maulana Yasin (HA) is Gheebah and Haram
  2. Commenting/Critique of Islamic websites e.g. of askimam.org would be Gheebah and Haram
  3. Every man who comes home and tells his wife about something at work would be Gheebah and Haram and it would be Haram for the wife to console the husband
  4. Every Professor/Teacher who looks at works of their students could potentially be Gheebah and Haram

Thirdly, you need to act on what you receive. If the forums are Haram (as Fatwa given) then its game over and the fact that you are still here and discussing shows that your own mind is disagreeing with the fatwa

We are all trying to be as polite as possible in trying to make you see what (I think) you already know.

The fact that you are more confused then when you started shows the values of Fatwaas which you are posting because the fundmental question to ask Ulama is this:

  1. You post on an Islamic forum and Shaykh (Mufti) Abu Hajira (HA) replies and 10,000 people witness the exchange between the two of you
  2. You are sending an email to South Africa and receiving a reply, it is a SINGULAR COMMUNICATION between 2 Na-Mehram Muslims

How is 1 HARAM and 2 HALAL?

I meant you decide which, Ulema or fatwa you choose to follow once all the evidence is before you. I agree with some of the brothers and I said this before, that you're understanding of gheebah differs and if you choose to accept the answers given by those 2 Muftis then fair enough. Once more if I'm wrong I seek refuge from Allah and it is indeed He who knows best.

Having said that there's no need to keep on making references to my situation or/and my understanding of gheebah. I've made peace with that.

Give it a rest. Staff may choose to pause this thread for a while.
