Mufti Saab may have a point!

Depends on the status of the person.

Such a fatwa would apply if the email addres was something like sallalahualayhiwassallam@.....

''I just received this from someone anonymous:

"I write to you seeking your forgiveness for backbiting and slandering against you in the past. I am a fool for being backbiter and liar/slanderer and for doing so and wish to seek to rectify my wrong doings. Please forgive me for this and May Allah bless you, forgive you and grant you great success in this life and the hereafter, Ameen."

And of course I replied by stating that all is forgiven! Please make dua for the person, whoever it may be (and also me).''

That's really nice, but unfortunately, these are like viral messages that get sent around via sms, whatsapp and so on. The above could be genuine and we hope it is. However, IF the recipient asks what was said about them, then that person will have to tell all. Better not to do it in the first place.

Once Hadhrat Junaid Baghdaadi (rahmatullah alayh) saw a healthy man begging. In his heart he thought ill of the person. That night in a dream someone instructed him (Hadhrat Junaid) to eat the flesh of a dead human body which was presented to him. He refused, saying that he does not devour carrion. It was said to him: 'After all, you had devoured the Faqeer's flesh when you made gheebat of him." Hadhrat Junaid responded: "I did not say anything about him." It was said to him: "Gheebat first originates in the heart."

His eyes opened, and he rushed out in search of the Faqeer to seek pardon for having thought ill of him. Whilst searching, he saw him walking in a distance. The Faqeer from a distance looked at Hadhrat Junaid and recited the Qur'aanic aayat: "He (Allah) is The One who accepts the taubah of His servants." "In future, beware!"

Sister,

This is Hazrat Shaykh (Mufti) A.S. Desai Saheb (HA)'s personal opinion and there are many people who name their children precisely as the Sahabah (RA) WORD for WORD and there is nothing wrong with it.

An elder in the Shura of Bangladesh is called Abu-Darda and there are "Pakistanees" who are called "Salman Farsi"

And neither are you under obligation to follow this opinion. Many will say its "safe" but then there are many Ulama around the world who wouldn't find anything wrong with your Username whether Maria is your real name or not

The incidents and quotations of Auliya Allah are not used as evidence in Fatwa the Usools of Madhab are used for giving Fatwa.

Jazakallahu Khayran

Q. How should a person repent for having made gheebat? Is it necessary to seek forgiveness from the person?

A. If the person is aware of the gheebat, then it is necessary to ask forgiveness from him. If he is unaware, then only repent (Istighfaar), and make dua for the one about whom gheebat was made. If the targeted person is unaware, one should not create ill-feeling by informing him of the gheebat one had made.

~ mufti a s desai

Shaikh Zulfiqar Ahmed says it is enough to ask for ijmali (general) forgiveness for all injustices done to a person. So to say please forgive all that I have said and heard. (Kaha suna maaf karna). In addition to this some charity should be done for the person you dome gheebat of.

As a remedy of gheebat hazrat hakeemul ummat prescribed that you should go and Inform the person and ask for forgiveness.

Jazakallah.

I only mentioned what I heard in lectures, including the one by Shaykh Riyadhul Haq. I'm probably wrong as I heard it years ago, but then again, I may have recalled it correctly.

But Alhumdulillah, it's good to know that one wouldn't need to give details of the gheebah.
