Assalamu alaikum.

If someone do gheebah and then ask your opinion on it, if you say ''I don't wanna do gheebah'' then automatically the other person would come to know that your views about the third person is also not good. so, does it mean by saying ''I don't want to do geebah'' you actually did gheebah?

If I say, "I don't want to answer your question" - Would that answer your question?

Maulana has put it really well but I'd like to add to it too make a couple of things clear from my understanding.

Quote:

This statement is not correct at all. It takes two or more to do Gheebah. So if the person talking is doing Gheebah, the person listening who doesn't say one word, is equally as sinful in Gheebah because it take two to do Gheebah.

So if someone asked me something about someone and I say, I don't want to do gheebah, this means that I am stopping them from doing Gheebah and NOT because my opinion about the other person is bad.

Hope that makes sense.

Gheebah is to say anything about someone that if the other person was to hear it, it would hurt their feelings and not just necessarily something evil. Even to say that brother so and so is fat/short is Gheebah.

Plenty of threads on Gheebah, please take a look.

Question
Salam,
I was just wondering what the ruling in Islam is on back-biting, with resources from the Bukhari and Muslim Hadiths... I was also wondering whether it is permissable for muslims to say "Astaghfirullah" upon seeing another fellow muslim brother or sister doing an unlawful act (in Islam)... or are we to keep silent and say nothing?... Please if you could, give the resources from the Bukhari or Muslim hadiths?!
JazakAllah Khair

Bismillah

Al-jawab billahi at-taufeeq (the answer with Allah's guidance)

Backbiting is Haraam & a Major sin. (Al Kaba'ir)

Allah Ta'ala says:

"O you who believe! Avoid much suspicion, in deeds some suspicions are sins. And spy not neither backbite one another. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his dead brother? You would hate it (so hate backbiting). And fear God, verily, God is the one who accepts repentance, Most Merciful." (49: 12)

Prophet Muhammad (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) said :"Do you know what backbiting is?" They said, "Allah and His Messenger knows best." He then said, "It is to say something about your brother that he would dislike." Someone asked him, "But what if what I say is true?" The Messenger of Allah said, "If what you say about him is true, you are backbiting him, but if it is not true then you have slandered him." (Muslim)

We must as Muslims enjoin good and forbid the evil:

Allah Ta'ala says:

"You are the best nation brought forth for the people of the world: you enjoin
right and you forbid wrong, and you believe in Allah." (Qur'an 3/110).

Also Allah Ta'ala says:

"Believing men and believing women are the protecting friends of each other:
they enjoin right and they forbid wrong." (Qur`an 9/71).

Enjoining good & forbidding the evil should be done to the extent of a Muslim individual ability.

"Whoever of you sees wrong being committed, let him change it with his hand
(i.e. by force). If he is unable to do that, then with his tongue, and if he is unable to do that, then with his heart." (Muslim)

Also, It is better to walk away from such individuals.
May Allah Ta'ala protect us all from this sin. Ameen.

And Only Allah Ta'ala Knows Best.

Another lesson I learnt is that the silent one is more sinful than the person doing all the Gheebah. Why? Let me try and explain.

3 people are munching on a roast Chicken.

They are all having a chat and talking about their friends etc. One of them is doing the most talking, the second is adding fuel to the fire and the silent one is pretending to be the most innocent and doesn't ever back-bite.

Now in such a scenario, the one talking away is eating less of the chicken as they are busy talking and not eating. The second person is eating more than the first, but less than the third because they are also busy chatting away. The third "innocent" person doesn't say a word but but is listening to all the chit chat and is eating away busily, hence getting most of the chicken.

If the third "innocent" person had any sense, they would ask them to stop talking and eat up as they are being left behind. They should all just eat nicely. (That's not to say that we cant talk while we eat, there are Hadith to suggest otherwise).

Now replace the chicken with the flesh of our brother. Who has eaten the most? The silent one!!

By the way, the left overs aren't very nice either.

Young people are still okay to deal with but old people *sighhh* they take offence no matter how nicely you try to stop them from making ghaabah.

Very good example abu muhammed.

Sorry. Actually the backbiting is the "eating the dead flesh" so the one who backbites more is eating more flesh, not the silent one. The silent one will be sinful if they're capable of stopping it but not in the category of the one who is backbiting. The chicken in your scenario would be the "safe zone" or the "alternate to dead brother's flesh" so the one who ate more chicken saved themself from that much backbiting/sin.

Jazakallah, just a lesson I learnt from a lecture, probably by Mufti Ismail Menk.

Also the famous Hadith about the men who were talking, Only one of them made an ill comment, yet the prophet said they were both backbiting (it takes two to tango)

I could be wrong about the Hadith though.

is it also important if someone bears news we should stop the tale bearer in his tracks and not inform the person whose name is being tarnished anyone know anything about that? I read something about this in some books this is what one does with tale bearers

If my example had only two people eating the chicken, would they not be equally sinful if only one was doing the talking and the other just nodding the head in agreement or horror. They would both be guilty right?

Yes agreement is taking part so that's different. Nodding is pretty much another type of fueling.

it was the following parts that probably wasn't expressed correctly in your example,
"and the silent one is pretending to be the most innocent and doesn't ever back-bite."
"The third "innocent" person doesn't say a word but but is listening to all the chit chat and is eating away busily"

Nothing about agreeing and nodding in that so I felt I should clear it up otherwise many people who are not sinful and actually hate what they're hearing (Gheebah) might feel sinful and responsible which can cause many issues for various reasons between them. Always remembering that not everyone is capable of stopping someone physically or even verbally but the the least they can rightfully do is show disgust and feel remorse even with complete silence..... and not let chicken get cold

Don't worry, still in agreement with the comment. Yet once again I would like to add:

Listening to Ghibah

Someone who listens to backbiting is a partner to it. He is not absolved of the sin of listening unless he remonstrates verbally, or in his heart if he is afraid. If he is able to start talking about something else, or to change the subject of the conversation, then it is imperative for him to do so.

"And, when they hear vain talk, they turn away from it." [Qur'an, 28:55]

"[Successful are] those who shun vain talk." [Qur'an, al-Mu'minun: 3]

"Whoever is present while a Muslim is humiliated before him, and is able to assist him [and yet does not], Allah will humiliate him before [all of] creation." [Ahmad in al-Musnad, 3/487; Suyuti in Al-Jami` As-Saghir, 2/510, #8375]

"Whoever protects a believer from a hypocrite, Allah will send to him an angel to protect him from the Fire of Hell on the Day of Arising. [Abu Dawud in al-Adab, 4/272, #4883]

"Whoever averts [an attack] from the honor of his brother, Allah will avert the fire from his face on the Day of Arising." [Tirmidhi (hasan)]

Jazakallah Maulana, We posted at the same time. Yes you are still correct. I should've worded my quick example a bit better. Well spotted.
