السلام عليكم

I have heard from loads of people who claim that he was a Sufi, question is was he really sufi ?

In Sallabi's book it mentions that he set up khanqahs for them, allocated funds to them, used them against the Fatamids and after it as they would stir up love for the ahe bayt with their over dramatic stories etc and make them get emotional, Salabi mentions he used the Sufis to combat this emotional side of feelings etc. Many were part of his army and many would rally up troops for him.

However it does not mention who his Shaykh was etc, or whether he himself was a Sufi. Other than he was a devout Muslim, fond of listening and reading ahadith, would engage in the remembrance of Allah and night prayers and would make sure that his troops would do the same.

Anyone care to shed any light on this matter ?

According to the Ghair Muqallideen, he was an Ash'ari Sufi and many have made takfeer upon him (rh).

The video is in Arabic but contains faces, therefore Halalified.

Halalified YT Audio

Plenty of opinions flying around with the same idea.

May Allah protect us from fitnah.

Salahuddin Ayyubi - The Pride of Islam

Salahuddin (Saladin), a name that inspired both fear and respect in the crusaders eyes. Though, to some people in Europe at the time he epitomised the Anti-Christ due to hostile Christian propaganda, someone they believe murdered innocent Christian in the name of Islam during the crusades but to others such as myself, he was a celebrated hero, and a role model for many leaders in years to come.

Firstly, I would like to describe the nature of Salahuddin Ayyubi (rahmatullahi alaihi). He was a devout Muslim to whom Islam meant everything, he would never miss his daily five times prayers even when he was ill, and had a dislike for people who tried to instill free-thinking, unnecessary debate and controversy into the doctrines of Islam. He truly loved the Quran and wept upon hearing it read. In spite of being a king, he journeyed in search of knowledge, travelling to a scholar to learn the Muwatta of Imam Malik (rahmatullahi alaihi).

During his youth he was a quiet methodical thinker given more to religious study than military ambition. As a child he was taught the recitation of the Holy Quran, the Arabic language and the shariah. This basis proved to be effective in his middle age.
He also did many things to encourage people in their worship such a building Madrassas. He also abolished those tolls that were payable by pilgrims on their way to Makkah.

He had many interests, ranging from geography and history to commerce and politics, and was opened to suggestions on most subjects for when they concerned Islam.
His generosity was boundless. Once he paid debt of 200,000 dinars off for his brother, though he himself stayed steadfast. The vast empire that was to come under his command meant that he had extensive riches in his hand, yet his accountants had to keep some of his financial details a secret from him, afraid that he would give it all away and there would be nothing left for real emergencies.

He was kind and gentle, one to treat everybody feuitly. Though above all this was his duty to Allah. Baha-uddin (rahmatullahi alaihi) his faithful secretary stated:

"I never knew him to show any anxiety about the numbers and strength of the enemy. He would listen to plans of all kinds and discuss their consequences without any excitement or loss of composure."

This was the same Salahuddin that some would criticise, but on the other hand he was portrayed as a chivalrous and legendary figure in European history also, a figure who respected his friends as well as his foes - when Richard's horse was killed in battle Salahuddin sent him fresh one saying:

"It is not proper that a warrior should have to fight on foot." In times of war he was extremely generous to enemy civilians, allowing them to go free with their lives and goods, an act of humanity that was rarely shown to the Muslims by their enemies.

On 4th march, 1193, this beloved servant of Allah left the world. At his death, though he was the most powerful and greatest in the Muslim empire of the era, he had only one gold piece and 47 silver peices to his name. He owned no property and had paid off all his debts. While his family mourned him, those close to the courageous man found that, at the time of his death, he did not posses enough money to pay for his burial. This was Salahuddin, an example for leaders to come and a true servant of Allah. May Allah's mercy be upon him. Ameen.

I'm more interested in the claim that he was a Sufi ? We know he was generous to them and supported them. Whether he was one or not Allah knows best

Yes, he must have been ashari which is pretty obvious though I guess like most muslims he probably had little knowledge about asharis and maturudis and was content with his aqeedah being the aqeedah of surah ikhlas. With regards to his sufi links once again this is an interesting question and I'm sure somebody has some reference for this though I'm not aware.

I think he had a bit more knowledge than the average muslim Walahu'Alam as he did go and study under the big scholars of his time, and later one of his qadi's compiled him a book for it as well which later he would teach to his children.

Quote:
On the subject at hand, Ibn Shaddad writes, "He had sound belief, and constantly remembered God. He acquired his belief on the basis of evidence by studying under the most famous shaykhs and greatest scholars. Thus he acquired belief that was sound, and free of the taint of anthropomorphism (referring to the Jahmiyyah), without it leading to him denying any divine attributes nor engaging in misinterpretation (referring to the Mu'tazilah)." From this, Dr. Sallabi concludes, "Salah ad-Deen Ayubi paid a great deal of attention to preserving the basic principals of Islamic belief in accordance with the madh-hab of Ahlul Sunnah. They (the Ayubids) followed the methodology of the 'Ashari Madhab and strove hard to fight any deviation therefrom..."

Yes akhii he has written a 3 volume set on him, I'm also hearing his books on the Khulafa Rashideen are quite good too. His writing style is a bit dry though but he is a brilliant historian and outlays everything in a excellent way with sources, learnt a lot from him. I guess I can't expect all history books to be like Futuhush Sham :D

Saviours of Islamic Spirit any good akhi ? What's it about ?

This is the Sunnah of Allah!

Super powers come and go and the victory is always as Allah planned.

Take a look at all the superpowers to date, they were victorious over the believers, from Pharoa to USSR, see who they oppressed and see who was victorious. Same thing happening again, The Crusaders - The US - You name it, history is repeating itself.

Patience has its price and Allah has his ways. Alhumdulillah.

True, history repeats itself and their is no other better place that you can learn from.

Quran ( Allah tells us what happens to the previous nations etc)

Ahadith, Sunnah, Seerah ( Our only guide if we wish to be successful )

Sahaba ( shining stars we learn from them after the Messenger (saw) )

Saliheen ( the pious after them, what and how they did etc )

Ulema ( who teach us about the above and put it into simpleton terms for us- ofcourse that' complies with Quran and Sunnah otherwise we reject )

It's all history the above, and we follow it, learn it, make ourselves aware of the various pitfalls and things to avoid and how to better ourselves surely we won't go wrong. The above is how I look at a lot of things, history eh akhii it's all there. Our history is preserved, it's hasn't been distorted alhumdulilah so we can learn a lot if we really wanted to - plus it's the ultimate guidance.
