The sunnah Method of sitting while eating from Gulzar e Sunnat, By Arif Billah Hazrat Maulana (Miyan sahab) Syed Asghar Hussain رحمة الله عليه Muhaddith Daruloom Deoband.

بسم الله الرحمن اللرحيم

P:37

Sunnah method of sitting: The sunnah method of sitting while eating is of squatting.. or to raise the right leg and keep the left one down.
Sitting with legs folded ( As in Tashahhud posture (Jalsah) of Salah) is also sunnah and to avoid sitting cross-legged without any need. (- As mentioned in Arba'en)

jazakAllah khair br dr76

Sorry, for I have wrongly worded my above post, I called up Mufti Saheb and he said quoting from Mufti Taqi Usmani's book on sunnah's and etiquette's of eating that sunnah of squatting (putting the sole of the right foot et al) was only at the time of Jihad..(as br. Servant has rightly pointed out).

Sis Taalibah, Mufti Saheb said there is a book by Mufti Usmani on sunnah's of eating, so if you or anyone else could get the book..it'd be great.

You know when general people sit in the squatting position - it looks a bit..... well..... undignified, for want of a better word. But when the arabs sit like that it actually looks elegant, like a pose.

I guess since the time of Nabi صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم they naturally have a certain way of holding themselves, tying their scarves, looking good in broken sandals and doing miswaak on the streets etc.... Subhanallah, its amazing!!!

Sorry to go off topic :)

I suppose that is the wisdom behind it. To be in an 'undignified' state while eating, to remind us we are actually slaves. Slaves of Allah.

Valid point ^

I heard a few ppl say sitting in the squatting position looks ''indecent'' (astaghfirullah, i know its wrong to use that word for a sunnah) so i just meant that Nabi صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم was an arab and when the arabs sit like that it looks pretty dignified and decent.

Of course anyone who uses that position with the intention of observing a sunnah will still be amply rewarded, irrespective of how it appears to rest of the world.

السلام عليكم و رحمة الله و بركاته

I wonder if it has anything to do with also the thing we are elevating? In other words, not only are we elevating ourselves and seeking comfort, we elevate our food, we elevate our studies, we elevate our work... Contrast that to when we pray salaah, we go through the motions bringing ourselves down to sajdah.

To be honest, I dont care what people were to say or think.

If my beloved (saw) did it, then there MUST be plenty of benefits in it. Mostly those that we don't see and that's were these commentators go wrong.

No matter how advanced science becomes, in the end, the Sunnah will out do it and eventually, it'll even agree with it.

Be proud of the Sunnah, no matter how small or insignificant we may think of it. Even if we don't practice them, believe and understand that these Sunnah are the most accurate way but we aren't intelligent enough to get it.

We are high tech Muslims, for example myself, I'm into technology big time, but into Sunnah even bigger inshaAllah.

I might have the world's best mobile phone in my pocket, but it doesn't beat the world's best tooth brush in my pocket, The Miswaak!

I feel more proud having a miswaak in my pocket than I do having my mobile. Alhumdulillah.

Long live the Sunnah.
