CONCERTS AND NASHEEDS

CONTAMINATED ENTERTAINMENT

In recent times, there has been a surge of interest in Nasheeds, Nazms and poetry. This new trend which has engaged many Muslims, especially the young has created a lucrative industry. The force of this trend is so overwhelming that it has overtaken even Deeni-conscious Muslims.

Undoubtedly, poetry has its valid position in Islam. However, current trends seem to exceed the Shar'i limitation on poetry.

In former times, poetry was a vehicle used to instill Islamic values in the hearts. It was generally composed by sincere and pious persons, who themselves diligently practiced on the Shariah. The wordings were used to invoke emotions of love for Allah Ta'ala and the Deen. The result used to be that the listener would become a more ardent follower of the Shariah.

Unfortunately, today it has become mere entertainment. Besides it being mere entertainment devoid of any spiritual benefit, the nature of certain Nasheeds have become Haraam and prohibited in the Shariah. Certain individuals and "bands" are producing Nasheeds and "Islamic" songs without the use of musical instruments. However, Musical sounds are created in the background using the mouth and other parts of the body. These Nasheeds and concerts are promoted to Muslims with attractive "Islamic" names and titles.

The Iftaa Committee of the Jamiat has thoroughly researched this concept and determined that musical sounds and effects created and produced through any part of the body or through the agency of any instrument is clearly prohibited. The Fuqaha (jurists) are categoric that ALL music, irrespective of how it is produced is prohibited in Islam. Hence, such songs and Nasheeds fall directly under the category of music itself. Notably, this is also the view of many leading Arab Ulama*. Every Muslim understands that music is prohibited. Thus, there can be no doubt in the impermissibility of such Nasheeds.

Nabi (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) has said, "There will come a time when people of my Ummah will declare Zina, silk, wine and music to be Halaal (permissible). Allah will destroy such people overnight and those who are not destroyed will be turned into monkeys and swines till the day of judgement." (Sahih al-Bukhari #: 5590).

This new industry of so-called Islamic Nasheeds has certain salient resemblances to the world of pop and rock music. The composers are themselves, in most cases, those who do not live their lives in conformity with the Shariah. Some of these poets and performers imitate western counterparts-the rock and pop groups- in appearance, style, dressing, tune, etc.

Since these songs are marketed as "Islamic" demand has grown amongst Muslims. Now the public is invited to attractive "Islamic" Nasheed concerts. Such events are totally against the spirit of the Shariah. Those who are engaged in producing such music should earnestly do a close self introspection of their actions and objectives. If they realize that they have erred, they should immediately repent and abandon this evil business. Those who intend attending these concerts should honestly evaluate their motives and base desires. Will our actions draw the pleasure or displeasure of Allah? Are we emulating our beloved Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) or following in the footsteps of the disbelievers?

The Muslim Ummah is urged to abstain from attending events that endanger of our Imaan.

The comfort and coolness found by reciting Quran cannot be found in any nasheeds

What would you think of a constantly ill doctor?
What would you say about an obese diet trainer?
What about a driving instructor with a banned license and a history of car crashes?
Or an English teacher who only speaks French?
I feel the same about "Islamic" Nasheed composers and singers who use Music, compose videos bollywood style with wind blowing their Shawl or gowns and the imitation of songs where words are substituted with Allah & Muhammad in the place of lover or crush is nothing short of complete disrespect and desperation.

Extremely true. An old lesson where the affects of words will not occur when it's not embedded in the heart and actions of the speaker. I can count on one hand how many Nasheed artists have a Sunnah beard. The western pop culture is too strong that even within Muslims in the name of Islam pathetically dive head first into this trend. Yvonne Ridley wrote an amazing article about this too.

Sad and worrying part is how to make the young understand? Recently a niece had to be talked out of going to one of these nasheed "concerts"...it took a lot of explaining for her to finally accept that there were so many anti Islamic elements to the whole thing. Nowadays the father putting the foot down like in my day seems to work the opposite way ) :

salaam

i personally think that even the whole concept of nasheed singers has gone over the bounds, even with those that dont use instruments or imitate the sounds of instruments. they have created a culture akin to pop music culture where they have fans and groupies and create 'music' videos etc. before it was about people singing due to their love for allah and his rasool (saw). now its just about finding an alternative to music. many people who listen to arabic nasheeds dont even understand the words, so what are they getting from it apart from enjoyment from the rhythm of the words? i understand it is better than listening to music of course, but even imitation of kuffar is haram and this is where the nasheed culture is leading to, if it has not reached there already. i dont keep up with these things, but i remember a few years ago there was an islamic event which also featured nasheed singers. after the concert some of the women were chasing the singers as they left the stage! it was the event that yvonne ridley attended and i believed she also commented on this scenario that took place.

http://www.sunniforum.com/forum/showthread.php?72484-Nasheed-singers-imitating-popstars!

nasheeds/naats/nazams ect whatever you want to call them. when i was a kid i used to remember them being restricted to just audio without video accompaniment and usually recited by some person who professed love for Allah and His Rasool and showed this in his daily life and recited those nasheeds out of this love that he possesed. this recitation was usually done in a masjid and recorded by those attending who then passed the recording from person to person without seeking any commercial gain.

fast forward a decade or two and things have completely changed. now we have professionel nasheed 'artists' who sing about Allah, His Prophet and the last day but this does not reflect in their daily lives. some who sing about the love of the Prophet dont even have a beard on their face but would rather model themselves on the sunnah of the kuffar. the songs are written by professionel writers, song by professionel singers and recorded by professonel producers all for commercial gain. videos are made to accompany these new nasheeds in the sunnah of the kuffar, concerts are promoted and held, and the singer becomes a celebrity who even goes on to advise his fans on the deen and shariah and his words taken as words of knowledge as the words of a scholar would be taken.

our ulama of the past banned maulid and labeled it a biddah and haram because of the many things that took place in them that was against the shariah. may Allah bless them in their foresight and perserveranc to preserve the true deen.

the ulama of today now need to scrutinise this new culture of nasheed artists and fans which include women and girls going to concerts to listen to these people and even shamelessly chase them after the concert to get an autograph or audience with their favourite singer. i dont need to detail all the haram acts that take place around this new nasheed culture. anyone in their right mind and who are true to themselves will already know about this.

so i think it is time that our ulama of today make use of the label of deoband that they carry around and take lesson from the ulama of the past who did not hesitate in reserching, scrutinising and if the occasion arised passing judgement on those things that the awaam needed guidance on. and in my opinion this nashedd culture is one of them.
