MuftiSays members (only): Please help me build a resource by contributing a little bit [link removed]. Insha'Allah I will edit and finalize the piece once we've generated enough information. Kindly contribute under your MS name and drop a quick line here to let me know you've added something (to verify).

Please be mindful that the page is set to 'public' at the moment so whatever you type, others can and will see (i.e. it is not private so no private message please). I will close the page at the end of the project insha'Allah.

JazakAllah khayran brother, this will be very helpful insha'Allah in the first part of the project. The ultimate goal is to provide a resource for those who struggle - be it the gambler themselves or their loved ones struggle to help them out of such an addiction. Something they can read silently and see themselves in it enough to also see ways out insha'Allah.

A collective problem requires a collective solution insha'Allah.

I've updated with the following. Could members please help me with the hadeeth? JazakAllah khayran.

~~~
In the case of helping those we love - use hikmah. Whenever we confront a situation where a person is engaging in something we know to be haraam, the best way to approach them is through the example set for us by Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallem). [get full hadeeth insha'Allah]. A person came to Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallem) after alcohol was prohibited and asked him (salallahu alaihi wa sallem) for permission to drink. Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallem) first asked him: "are you always truthful?" The man replied: "yes." Then Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallem) asked him: "do you always pray your salaah?" Again, the man replied: "yes." Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallem) advised him to continue telling the truth and praying his salaah; he (sallallahu alayhi wa sallem) did not tell him to stop drinking nor did he give him permission to continue. The man continued and every time he came to the masjid for salaah, he would leave his bottle outside and on his way out, he would get his bottle. After a while, the man said to himself "why should I keep taking the bottle with me, I'll just leave it at home." So he did. After some more time, and because he was truthful and he was keeping good company by continuing with his salaah at the masjid, he stopped drinking.
Insha'Allah we can take a lesson from this as well in that when we want to help our loved ones and friends who may be struggling with such an addiction, we can use hikmah, recognize their strengths, invite them to places where they will have good company and refrain from labeling them as "sinners" (verbally or otherwise) or continually pointing out the "haraam" (verbally or otherwise) they are engaging in. Insha'Allah over time, with good company, they will change. This is one way we can help our loved ones insha'Allah.
Also, it is not a good idea to tackle such problems with a book or pamphlet about the issue - listing statistics, talking about the haraams, the consequences, etc. asking them to read it and leave. No, instead, talk to them - talk about Allah Ta'aala, talk about why we are Muslim, why we're here, talk about imaan, talk about the grave and how we're going to be there alone, talk about Jannah, lightly talk about Jahannam, etc. - stuff that will make him think. Insha'Allah, after a while and with good company, he or she will slowly leave it.
More update insha'Allah (please bear in mind that these are not tidied up just yet and please feel free to contribute either in this thread or on the TitanPand link I provided earlier):
~~~

If you are the one engaged in gambling, then insha'Allah one thing you can focus on is keeping good company - seek out good company, sit with them, listen to their discussions, watch their actions, gain knowledge through them insha'Allah.

Do the dhikr of Allah Ta'aala.

Send abundant salawaat on Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallem).

If it is online: close each and every account you hold with any betting site online or elsewhere. Also, put ad-blockers on your computer and consider blocking all images to protect yourself from those images they use to draw you in.

If it is a physical space like a casino: don't even go near it. You know where it is, so avoid driving past it. Make the effort to alter your route to safeguard yourself and not be drawn in by all the flashy lights, colours, images etc.

Give your money to someone you trust, perhaps your mother, to hold onto it for you.

Give the amount you were planning to gamble away in charity instead. Everytime you want to gamble, give in charity instead. It is a transaction that never loses insha'Allah!

In addition to what I've already listed (taken from various sources, not my own ideas at all), here are some excellent suggestions from various members and guests on brother Lostinthedunya's thread on gambling:
  • Itekaaf
  • fasting (... wait, was this in there or did I throw this in? Either way, here it is alhamdulillah!)
  • going with jamaat
  • attaching oneself to a shaykh
  • making abundant du'aa

All great advice masha'Allah!

Now, keeping in mind that people are at various levels in their deen and some are non-practicing and have no clue about itekaaf or jaamat and might be opposed to some of the suggestions for various reasons, insha'Allah we can continue to generate suggestions that will work for as many different people as possible.

I also noticed the following 2 booklets were mentioned in the brother's thread:

Insha'Allah I will try to read through these booklets. I already noticed some lists towards the end of Kicking the Habit masha'Allah, alhamdulillah.
