(bism1)

(salaam)

The following is a quick summary of Shaykh Husain Abdul Sattar's September 8, 2002 talk on LEARNING TO LEAVE OUR DESIRES:

GOAL: to fulfill our necessities within the boundaries of shariah, while curtailing our desires.

We strive to live within the boundaries Allah Ta'aala has created for us, and fulfill our necessities without overstepping those bounds and losing ourselves in endless desires. Alhamdulillah, our needs have an end and if we live within the parameters Allah Ta'aala has set for us, insha'Allah we can fulfill those needs in ways that are most pleasing to Him. But, if we step into the realm of desires, we must recognize and understand that while desire is a part of our being, there is no end to it; and, unless we crush our desires, we will be at a loss.

A practical example: marriage and lowering the gaze, and keeping the dhikr of Allah Ta'aala every time we step outside our homes. Allah Ta'aala has created marriage for us to fulfill our necessities and has given us guidance on how to curtail our desires - by lowering our gaze. If we struggle with this, why not keep His words in our dhikr every time we step outside our homes:

“Qul lilmu/mineena yaghuddoo min absarihum…”

Tell the mumineen that they should lower their gaze.

Nafs (Lower self ) is based on desire.Crushing desires means crushing our Nafs.

The only thing to add here is :"Nafs can not be crushed....it can be trained"....the other name for which is TAZKIA.

Nafs has the property of 'Shahwat' to crush this property will stop propagation of species even in halal way; To give nafs a free hand will mean unguarded lust. The middle way is. عفّت (Use it in a halal way and guard the lust)

Nafs has the property if غضب (Rage). If uncontrolled it leads to ظلم, if crushed it leads to cowardice...if the nafs is trained all that remains is شجاعت (bravery)

And so on.....

So we don,t need to crush THE NAFS....we need to work on its TAZKIA.

Masha Allah..

The following are from Maktubaat e sadi.. the letters of Hazrat Shaikh Makhdum Sharfuddin Yahya Maneri رحمة الله عليه

بسم الله الرحمن اللرحيم

Control of Carnal Desires

The development of character and spirit, according to some, depends on complete extinction of carnal desires. This, says Makhdum, is not correct. He holds that the aim should not be to stamp out the desires of flesh but to put bridle on them.

Imam Ghazali رحمة الله عليه too has explained in Ihya -ul-Uloom, that the reformation of a man does not require complete suppression of vices like anger, malice etc. but in subduing these natural propensities and holding them in leash. Makhdum's treatment of the subject is inspiring and creates a profound impression on the readers.

He writes in a letter:

"He is an ignoramus and dotard who considers that the Shar'iah demands smothering of carnal appetites and natural instincts of man. He has not given thought to what the Prophet (saw) said:

'Iam a man and sometimes I get angry.' Sometimes his indignation became apparent on his face. That is why God loves those who 'control their wrath' (Q.III:134) and not those who do not posses that emotion at all. How can the Shar'iah demand extinction of sexual desire when the Prophet (saw) contracted nine marriages. If someone has lost his sex- urge, he ought to take medical treatment so that this natural instinct is restored.

For the loving care of one's family memers and children, anger over the enemies of God in fighting against them and preservation and propagation of one's race, spring from the natural instincts man posses, even the apostles of God have shown eagerness for these. They longed to have their line of progeny unbroken. The Shar'iah only demads that these instincts should be kept under strict commands of the law. A hunter needs a steed and a well trained dog which go after the chase on his bidding.

That horse, if untrained, will throw away the rider and the wild dog will pounce at him. It is thus essential that the horse and the dog should be well-trained for hunting. So are the instincts of sex and anger needed for capturing the hereafter. But, your aids should be under your control ; for if they gain a control over you, your ruin is inevitable. That is why Prayer and penance seek to bring these under one's command" (Letter.no.40)

Assalamualaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh.
The one who casts evil glances is cursed by Nabi(saw)

It has no doubt in that "EVIL GLANCES" are the seed of carnal desires, which leads to many other sins. Nabi-e-kareem sallahualaihi wasallam mentions in hadith "May the curse of Allah be upon the one who casts evil glances and upon the one who presents him/herself to be looked at." The curse of Nabi ﷺis clear proof that this is a very despicable crime. The meaning of curse is to become distant from the mercy of Allah. Thus, he who has become distant from the mercy of Allah Ta'ala, cannot gain salvation from the evils of his Nafs .
If a person does not guard his eyes then he cannot guard his private parts either and curses which descends upon him is a separate punishment on its own.
In another hadith Rasulullah ( ﺻﻠﯽ ﺍﻟﻠﮧ ﻋﻠﯿﮧ ﻭﺳﻠﻢ ) said: (Hadith Qudsi, meaning Allah Tala says:)
ﺍﻥ ﺍﻟﻨﻈﺮﺓ ﺳﮭﻢ ﻣﻦ ﺳﮭﺎﻡ ﺍﺑﻠﯿﺲ ﻣﺴﻤﻮﻡ ﻣﻦ ﺗﺮ ﮐﮭﺎ ﻣﺨﺎﻓﺘﯽ
ﺍﺑﺪﻟﺘﮧ ﺍﯾﻤﺎﻧﺎ ﯾﺠﺪ ﺣﻼﻭﺗﮧ ﻓﯽ ﻗﻠﺒﮧ
"Verily the evil glance is a poisonous arrow from the arrows of Iblees. He who abstains from casting evil glances, I will grant him such Imaan, that he will feel the sweetness of it in his heart".
"Another reality which people are totally unaware of is that by protecting one's eyes from lustful glances, one is promised the taste of the sweetness of Imaan".

And if a person saves himself from this deadly evil sin then he will be rewarded. Hafiz ibn Katheer ( ﺭﺣﻤۃ ﺍﻟﻠﮧ ﻋﻠﯿﮧ ) mentions in his
Tafseer :
ﻣﻦ ﺣﻔﻆ ﺑﺼﺮﮦ ﺍﻭﺭﺛﮧ ﺍﻟﻠﮧ ﻧﻮﺭﺍ ﻓﯽ ﺑﺼﯿﺮﺗﮧ
"He who protects his eyes from unlawful gazes, Allah Ta'ala will grant him the light of the heart."
Taken from book of Hazrath Hakeem Akthar ra. "The 14 Harms Of Casting Evil Glances"

السلام عليكم

بسم الله الرحمن اللرحيم

From the golden Malfuzaat (Anecdotes) of Hakeem ul Ummat Hazrat Thanwi رحمة الله عليه :

" Malakat-e-Razeelah (the lowly bestial qualities) by themselves are not evil, e.g. Shahwat (sexual lust). In fact, a man with strong shahwat will derive greater Noor (spiritual light) from the opposition he offers his shahwat.

The Noor of a man with weaker shahwat will be less. Thus, the basis of Divine Proximity are Af'al-e-Ikhtiyariyah (actions which are the effects of man's free will). When ikhtiyar (free will) is employed to a greater degree (e.g. in striving against lowly desires), the Divine Proximity gained, will correspond to the greater effort."

Nafs ka Mujahida Emotional Shaykh Zulfiqar Ahmad Naqshbandi

Youtube Video

English transliteration of above video

Shaykh Zakariyya Kandhlawi Ra has also written this in "The Inseparability Of Shari'a & Tariqa".

The stormy of Shāh Abu Sa'id Gangohī is well known and I have narrated it in many of my booklets. In summary, the story is that he went to Shāh Nizam al-Din Balkhi. When Shāh Nizam al-Din learned that his mentor's grandson is about to arrive, he set out to receive him from one of the stations. Shāh Nizam al-Din showed him the utmost respect and returned with him to Balkh. He sat him on an elevated place and himself sat in the servants area. When Shāh Abu Sa'id asked permission to leave, Shāh Nizam al- Din placed a gift of gold coins at his feet. Then Abu Sa'id said, "Shaikh, I do not need these worldly things nor have I come here for this purpose. I want the [spiritual] wealth which you came and took from us." No sooner had said this that Shāh Nizim al-Din completely changed his attitude. He said harshly, "Go to the barn and prepare food for the hunting dogs."
Thus, he was placed in charge of watching over the hunting dogs, and washing them, bathing them, and keeping them clean. Sometimes he was told to blow into the fires [to warm the water for the bathrooms] and at other times to accompany his mentor on his hunting trips, holding the leashes of the hunting dogs while the Shaikh rode his horse. One of the servants was instructed, "Give the servant who lives in the barn two pieces
of barley bread twice a day from the house." Now whenever Shāh Abu Sa'id came in the presence of Shāh Nizam al-Din, he would not look up at Shāh Abu Sa'id. He told Shāh Abu Sa'id to sit far from him and refused to acknowledge his presence when he came in.
Once the Shaikh ordered the cleaning lady to purposely drop some garbage over him and note his reaction. When she passed by and purposely slipped some garbage over him he grew red with anger and said, "I would have showed you if we were in Gangoh." The cleaning lady informed the Shaikh of Shāh Abu Sa'id's response. The Shaikh said, "There is still some odor of arrogance in him." Two months later, the Shaikh ordered the cleaning lady to do the same again. This time he [Shāh Abu Sa'id] only glared at her then quietly lowered his head. When the cleaning lady came and told the Shaikh, "Today, he did not say a thing. He glared at me and then lowered his head." The Shaikh said, "There is still some odor left." After a few months, he ordered the cleaning lady to "Throw a whole basket of cow dung on him until he is covered in it from head to toe." But now Shāh Abu Sa'id was spiritually purified. When she came and threw the whole basket over him, he stood up concerned and said humbly, "The poor woman hit me accidentally and fell. Tell me, are you okay? Are you hurt anywhere?" He then scooped up all the cow dung with his hands saying, "Here let me put this back in for you," and carefully put it back in the basket. The cleaning lady narrated the whole incident and said in astonishment, "Today, instead of getting angry, Shāh sahib pitied me and scooped up all the dung and put it in the basket." The Shaikh said, "Now he is rectified."
Later that day, Shāh Nizam al-Din sent a servant to Shāh Abu Sa'id, "Today we will go hunting, prepare the dogs for the trip." In the evening, the Shaikh rode out into the jungle with his servants. Fragile and sickly, Shāh Abu Sa'id was guiding the well-fed hunting dogs by their leashes. He tied the leashes to his waist and tried to hold them back but fell and was dragged on the jungle floor. Branches, thorns, and rocks bruised and cut his body, but not a sound came from his mouth. When the other servants pulled in the dogs and raised him to his feet he was trembling from fear that, "The Shaikh will be angry with me," and will say "You didn't follow my orders! Why didn't you control the dogs?" But the Shaikh was only testing him and this he had done. That night Shāh Nizam al-Din saw his spiritual mentor Shaikh 'Abd al-Qudds [Shah Abu Sa'id's grandfather] in his dream. He [Shāh 'Abd many exertions as you put my children through." Early the next morning Shāh Nizam al-Din called Shah Abu Sa'id from the barn and hugged him. He then said, "I brought with me the bountiful blessings of the Chistiyya family from India, and you are now taking it back. May Allah u bless you, you may now go home." Thus, he granted Shah Abu Sa'id successor ship and sent him back to India. This story is summarized, the original being much longer. Many famous stories of spiritual exertions of this kind are found in the books of history, but our physical strength has given away and we do not have the faith of our predecessors. Therefore, the spiritual masters after Shaikh Thānwī have become very lenient in this matter.
