(bism1)
(salaam)
Narrated Hz Ali rz.a: I heard RasulAllah sal lal lahu alaihi wasallam saying, "In the last days of this world there will appear some young foolish people who will use (in their claim) the best speech of all people (i.e. the Qur'an) n they will abandon Islam as an arrow going through the game. Their belief will not go beyond their throats (i.e. they will have practically no belief), so wherever you meet them, kill them, for he who kills them shall get a reward on the Day of Resurrection."(Bukhari, Book #56, Hadith #808)

Salam

I am a but confused here

We're the Khwarij kafir, I've always heard the notion that they were, but what I don't understand is how did they manage to produce such top ulema if still being kafir ?

Also the Mu'tazila were these kafir too, how did their beliefs vary from the khwarij ?

I think it was the khwarij who believed that doing small sins makes one a kafir, where as the belief of the ahlus Sunnah is that if you commit a sin such as adultery, drinking, then it takes you out of fold of Islam temporarily or for that duration that you commit the sin.

Are Madhkhalis khawarij? If so, why?

Are they just deviants but still Muslims or out of fold of Islam?

Narrated Hz Abdullah bin 'Amr bin Yasar rh.a: That they visited Hz Abu Sa'id Al-Khudri rz.a and asked him about Al-Harauriyya, a special unorthodox religious Sect, "Did you hear the Prophet sallallahu alaihi wasallam saying anything about them?" Hz Abu Sa'id rz.a said, "I do not know what Al-Harauriyya is, but I heard the Prophet sallallahu alaihi wasallam saying, "There will appear in this nation---- he did not say: From this nation ---- a group of people so pious apparently that you will consider your prayers inferior to their prayers, but they will recite the Quran, the teachings of which will not go beyond their throats and will go out of their religion as an arrow darts through the game, whereupon the archer may look at his arrow, its Nasl at its Risaf and its Fuqa to see whether it is blood-stained or not (i.e. they will have not even a trace of Islam in them)."(Bukhari, Book #84, Hadith #65)
Al-Harauriyya was a group that was involved in ifs n buts concerning religious issues by using their fallacious reasoning whereas we've to accede to every command of Allah swt n RasulAllah sallallahu alaihi wasallam even without using mind as sometimes our mind doesn't grasp each n every ayat or ahadis, if we use our reasoning power beyond proper limit may entail rejecting them.
This hadis is related to Khawarij. They're crushed though, yet their mentality is still alive. They'll re emerge 21 times (ibn maja) with different names n same propensity.
When does one's mind revolt against Islam? Invariably, it's observed that such new sects ramify when study is done neglecting proper channel. By self study of books knowledge can be gained but as my elders say that 'Ilm' has 'noor' which is transmitted through hearts. Knowledge devoid of Noor may lead to arrogance n in some cases even deviation. This is why RasulAllah sallallahu alaihi wasallam taught us following supplication.
Narrated Hz Abu Hurayrah rz.a: The Apostle of Allah (peace_be_upon_him) used to say: "O Allah, I seek refuge in Thee from four things: Knowledge which does not profit, a heart which is not submissive, a soul which has an insatiable appetite, and a supplication which is not heard."(Abu Dawud, Book #8, Hadith #1543)
