We've read and heard of many deaths recently, from the countless nameless brothers and sisters who have lost their lives in conflicts around the world, to those few that have made it into media and insha'Allah there is a lesson for us in each and every one of them.
What about the death of a little boy - little Hamzah? A little boy who starved to death in a wealthy country. A little boy with a family. A little boy from OUR ummah? How did we all fail little Hamzah?
His mother aside, his father aside, his older siblings aside - where were we? Why are there so many of us who are left without contacts, disconnected from the ummah? Anyone who has been or is at a point of intersection will know what it looks like and at some vantage points the image is devastatingly distorted, disgusting, horrendous... something we would never associate with or let anyone of our loved ones associate with yet this is our ummah and that very neglect and disassociation is the problem! How can we not be as responsible for his demise?
How can we hope to win battles against evil, when we can't even battle the evil within?
Such a sad state of affairs.
Ya Allah, correct our ummah! Ya Allah, correct our ummah! Ya Allah, correct our ummah... save us from gaflah... strengthen us, unify us, grant us victory over the evils within and those outside our ummah! Ameen.
Hamzah's story is just as valuable as all others and his story needs to be highlighted as well otherwise our trajectory is so twisted and mishapen, crooked... May Allah Ta'aala allow it to be a lesson for all and may there be immense barakah in the lesson for our ummah, may He guide us to the straight path. Ameen.
Yes, really sad but it happens worldwide and certainly in Canada too.
The mother may not have been Muslim (don't know), but his name suggests to me that his family is Muslim, his father seems to be Muslim... this little boy was our ummati. Headlines may not have picked up on it but he was our little brother. I don't doubt that in time more unnecessary details will emerge about the family and we shouldn't concern ourselves about how functional or dysfunctional they were or whether or what the issue was etc... all of that aside, he was a part of US and we have a duty towards one another too. So, if we're going to start dissecting every family, we'll eventually have to dissect ourselves as well and that is where we should focus - these incidents are symptoms of bigger problem.
