In a poem written by Imam Shafi', he states some very true facts about life!

Taken from a talk delivered by Shaykh Sulaiman Mulla.

"When they see me happy, it Hurts them! Today people are not sad over their issues. They are sad over the hapiness of others"

"Aaj log apne dukh se dukhi nahin hai, dusro ke sukh se dukhi hai"

(Apologies for the half hearted translation, in the lecture, the poem started in Arabic then swiftly moved to English and then went into fully Urdu. I guess it was more powerful in Urdu than in English)

The people used to be like flowers without any thorns, but today, they are thorns without any flower. (Abu Dharr)

Do not speak loudly of your happiness, for envy sleeps very lightly.

The Vanishing Bond: What Happened to Us?

(A reflection on family, friendship, and fading connections among South African Muslims)

There was a time when:

- Cousins felt like siblings.

- Neighbours became family.

- Sundays meant visiting—not rushing.

We showed up for weddings, funerals, and Eid—no invite needed.

But today… even siblings barely speak once our parents are gone.

- Cousins who shared holidays now feel like strangers.

- Our kids? They hardly know each other.

Where did we go wrong?

- We chased better lives—education, careers, postcodes.

- In that chase, relationships became optional.

- “Family time” turned into “when I get a chance.”

- Gatherings got smaller… then stopped.

Materialism crept in silently:

- Bigger houses, overseas holidays, private schools.

- Conversations became competitions.

Vulnerability? Rare.

- We now protect our image, instead of sharing our truth.

- Social media replaced real connection:

- Heart-to-hearts became likes and scrolls.

- It’s easier to post a perfect picture than say,
“I miss you” or “I’m not okay.”

- After our elders passed, we lost the glue:

- We didn’t know how to hold each other together.

- Small grudges became lifelong silences.

- Love wasn’t nurtured—it faded.

And the cost?

- Loneliness is everywhere—behind beautiful doors.

- Mental health struggles rise quietly.

- Our children grow up disconnected from their roots.

But it’s not too late.

- Call your sibling—even if it’s been years.

- Invite those cousins—even if it feels awkward.

Teach your kids:

- Family means showing up.

- Forgiveness matters.

- Connection needs effort.

In the end…

- We won’t remember our houses or likes.

- We’ll remember the people we loved—or regret those we lost.

- The bonds didn’t vanish. We let them go.

- But we can bring them back

One call. One message. One moment at a time.
