salaam

does anyone know the best way to use a smartphone for home surveillance either through a webcam or an independant camera?

ideally the camera should have motion detection or something and send an alert to my phone if it gets activated.

and i am on a budget so the cheaper the better!

looks like i might just be the home surveillance expert of the forum by default then.

i have come across this. connects to your wifi/modem. sends an alert within 5 seconds to your phone when the alarm/sensor is triggered. check the alert and you can see a recording of whatever triggered the alert. much cheaper and just as efficient than the monthly fee based security services other companies offer.

Salam, apologies for delay.

If you have a computer/laptop on at all times then you can use YawCam (www.yawcam.com/index.php)

Yawcam features:
.: Video streaming
.: Image snapshots
.: Built-in webserver
.: Motion detection
.: Ftp-upload
.: Text and image overlays
.: Password protection
.: Online announcements for communities
.: Scheduler for online time
.: Time lapse movies
.: Run as a Windows service
.: Multi languages

Java is required on the computer so it'll work on all platforms. If you don't have a PC on at all times, there are a few very power (electricity) friendly options but it'll require some knowledge of Linux and you'll obviously need a compatible web cam.

With available resources, I can't think of a cheaper option.

You can also pick up very old laptops with no screen even as it won't be needed. Install XP, install this you're good to go. There are FTP web space available for free where you can automatically upload motion detected images/videos so even if laptop is gone, the images are safe.

The above is at minimum or no cost depending on what you have available. However, if you have a budget then there's lots of options including the link you posted above but to be honest, I've tried many of these (below �100) IP cameras and they all have been very unreliable especially wireless.

i need something that will provide fast 'motion detection' alerts on my smartphone. i have read reviews and watched videos for the AVTECH AVN801 and it seems to be quite good if what they say is true. how good is Yawcam for alerts? and if the linux option is better then i can read up on it if you give me some leads or find someone local who can set it up for me.

i also need tracking software for a mac and windows laptop if you have any info on that.

as for resources i have a mac, windows desktop, windows laptop and also have space on a server.

I think I might just test out yawcam myself. I can't see any features for alerts so I guess some sort of manipulation of a web server could do the job

tracking for tracing stolen laptops/computers.

something like this www.hiddenapp.com . i found that through google. just wondering if there are better alternatives.

Salam,

Just tested Yawcam... works very well with motion detection. Set up to upload to FTP. Email alerts possible too. Very customizable too so I think it's actually an amazing surveillance budget alternative. A mobile app I think would be pretty easy (very simple and basic) to create for any developer.

As for tracking, no idea about that. Not really used the system.
