…The sound system in Masjid al Haram Makkah is the biggest and the most robust sound system on planet earth. Nothing comes close to it at all. The second biggest being the one of Masjid Nabawi…this is the Imam’s Mihrab in Masjid Nabawi…

[detail of where microphones are placed for Ruku and Sajdah]

…SubhanAllah! The technology Allah Ta’ala has blessed the Ummah with so that Adhan and Salat can be heard by millions…not only those present in the Haramain, but for every Adhan and every Salat performed in both of our sacred mosques recordings are available for a billion plus across the entire planet, as well as live televised streams…SubhanAllah! Such is Allah Ta’ala’s mercy and generosity to His creation…

…the entire population of Madinah al Munawwarah would cry when they heard Bilal RadhiAllahu anhu call Adhan…who cries upon hearing this Mubarak call now?? Allah Ta’ala’s mercy is unlimited…it’s our hearts that need fine tuning, Insha’Allah…

…Adhan moves across the globe in never ending waves…rippling hearts from high mountain tops to the deepest of valleys, from elaborate mosques to humble shacks, from desert dwellings to bustling cities, from sophisticated sound systems to crackly recordings…

nevertheless…

…how wondrous it would have been…

…to hear Ibn Umar RadhiAllahu anhu narrate the following from our Noble Nabi SallAllahu alaihi wasallam:
“When the Muslims arrived at Medina, they used to assemble for the prayer, and used to guess the time for it. During those days, the practice of Adhan for the prayers had not been introduced yet. Once they discussed this problem regarding the call for prayer. Some people suggested the use of a bell like the Christians, others proposed a trumpet like the horn used by the Jews, but ‘Umar RadhiAllahu anhu was the first to suggest that a man should call the people for the prayer; so Allah’s Apostle ordered Bilal RadhiAllahu anhu to get up and pronounce the Adhan for prayers.”

[photo from the Mukabbarya platform, located where Bilal RadhiAllahu anhu would call Adhan for Juma'ah. Looking down onto Rowdha Shareef ]

…or to have heard Abu Hurairah RadhiAllahu anhu’s voice as he narrated what he had heard our Blessed Rasul SallAllahu alaihi wasallam say:

“When the Adhan is pronounced Satan takes to his heels and passes wind with noise during his flight in order not to hear the Adhan. When the Adhan is completed he comes back and again takes to his heels when the Iqama is pronounced and after its completion he returns again till he whispers into the heart of the person (to
divert his attention from his prayer) and makes him remember things which he does not recall to his mind before the prayer and that causes him to forget how much he has prayed.”

…or…”Any person who takes a bath on Friday like the bath of Janaba and then goes for the prayer in the first hour, it is as if he had sacrificed a camel in Allah’s cause; and whoever goes in the second hour it is as if he had sacrificed a cow; and whoever goes in the third hour, then it is as if he had sacrificed a horned ram; and if one goes in the fourth hour, then it is as if he had sacrificed a hen; and whoever goes in the fifth hour then it is as if he had offered an egg. When the Imam comes out to begin the Khutba, the angels present themselves to listen to the Khutba.”

…or to have heard the voice of Salman al Farisi RadhiAllahu anhu narrate that he heard our Beloved Prophet SallAllahu alaihi wasallam say:

“Whoever takes a bath on Friday, purifies himself as much as he can, then uses hair oil or perfumes himself with the scent of his house, then proceeds for the Jumua prayer and does not separate two persons sitting together in the mosque, then prays as much as Allah has written for him and then remains silent while the Imam is delivering the Khutba, his sins in-between the present and the last Friday would be forgiven.”

…but surely a most awesome sound would be to hear our Beloved Al Mustafa SallAllahu alaihi wasallam saying:

“The person who recites Surah Kahf on Fridays, a Nur will appear for him from below the Arsh as high as the skies. This light will help him in the darkness of the day of resurrection . And all the sins which he may have committed from the last Friday till this Friday will be forgiven.”
…and…”Of all the days, Friday is the most virtuous. It is on this day that the trumpet will be blown. Send abundant salawaat upon me on Fridays because they are presented to me on that day.” The Sahabah RadiAllahu anhum asked: “O Rasulullah! How will they be presented to you when even your bones will not be present after your death?” Rasulullah SallAllahu alaihi wasallam replied: “Allah Ta’ala has made the earth haraam upon the prophets forever.”

O Lord, please send prayers upon Your comprehensive mercy, and Your complete blessing, and please send prayers upon the mercy to all wolds, O God of all worlds; prayers that keep on counting, and surround everything; and provide us from his blessings. And please open our hearts’ locks with keys from our love for him, and beautify (put “kohl” on) our insights’ eyes with his light, and purify our consciences’ secrets by his vision and closeness, so that we see nothing in existence save You through him, and from the slumber of our inattention we are alerted...

O Lord, please send prayers upon the one who stood up and completed Your religion, and conveyed Your message, and clarified Your path, and delivered Your endowment, and set the proof for Your Solitariness, and affixed in hearts Your Oneness. He is Your secret preserved by Your Status and Majesty, crowned by the lights of Your secrets and beauty. O Lord, send prayers upon him as much as You cherish him...

The Prophet's Mosque holds a record of 3000 speakers

The Prophet's Mosque contains a record number of speakers to accommodate
an enormous amount of worshippers on a daily basis. (Al Arabiya)

Thursday, 16 August 2012

The voice has always been the most present and effective means to communicate the teachings of Islam and Quran. Therefore, sound engineering in Mosques is of great importance, especially in the Two Holy Mosques, where a record number of speakers are fixed on the walls.

"There are more than 3000 speakers distributed in the corridors and outdoor squares of the Grand Mosque. On special occasions, the voice is communicated to nearby streets and regions to the squares of the Grand Mosque," Abdul Mohsen Bin Hamid, engineer and Project and Studies Manager at the General Presidency for the Affairs of the Grand Mosque and the Prophet's Mosque said.

The quality of the sound offers each individual at the Mosque a fair and sufficient amount of sound. It is a very complex technical accomplishment, and it is designed to serve hundreds of thousands of prayers at once.

"In regards to the functioning of sound systems in the Prophet's Mosque, there is a specific sound management, and technicians monitor the system and the imam or the muezzin. Microphones are turned on when the prayer starts then turned off when it ends," Abdul Wahed al-Hattab, Public Relations and Media Manager at the Prophet's Mosque said.

Microphones input sound in an electronic library with a great capacity to record and sort sounds from orators, imams and muezzins.

"The number of material in the audio library has reached more than 100 thousand hours. The visitor may obtain these recordings on tapes or CDs or any other storage device such as Flash or hard drives," Abdullah al-Honeini, Audio Library Manager at the Prophet's Mosque said.

The sound system capacity can affect the quality of the message positively or negatively. Prayer and reverence are the golden bridge connecting the believers with the imam.

JBL covers Prophet’s Mosque piazza

30 Apr 2013

SAUDI ARABIA: A column line array system from JBL has been installed to cover the piazza at the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah. The project was handled by audio consultant Ahmad Tekin Topuzdag who has served as the sound system manager for the two holy mosques for over a decade.

‘Due to extreme sun and heat, a few years back the entire piazza of Prophet’s Mosque was installed with 250 26m x 26m umbrella-like canopies, designed by SL-Rasch GmbH. Altec Lancing Horn speakers were already installed around the perimeter of the mosque to cover the piazza and surrounding areas,’ explained Mr Topuzdag. ‘However, after the installation of the new shades, the sound from the horn speakers was blocked and reflected by the new umbrellas.’

The degradation of the sound quality in this area was noticed by officials from the mosque, and an acoustic study was requested to find a temporary solution and improve the sound in general in this area. ‘The 73 horn speakers installed around perimeter had a limited frequency response of 500Hz to 10KHz,’ recalled Mr Topuzdag. ‘Therefore, Topuzdag Acoustic Consultancy took the opportunity to implement a much better frequency response in the piazza with a new sound reinforcement system.’

The initial measurements showed that the 257,000 sq-m piazza would require a further 130,000W to provide a uniform 84dBA coverage throughout. With this in mind, Mr Topuzdag designed a new system based around products from Harman Professional.

The new system centres on 140 JBL CBT 70J-1 line array column speakers with a further 85 CBT 70JE-1 extensions to provide extended bass response. ‘The JBL CBT 70J-1 series speakers have a perfect frequency response of 60Hz -20kHz as well as J shaped curving. This gives the speaker unique passive asymmetrical coverage resulting in even front to back SPLs,’ explained Mr Topuzdag. ‘Due to this, those pilgrims standing virtually underneath the cabinets do not get the disturbingly loud sound that you would expect from such powerful speakers.

‘However, the open area needed a punchier sound, therefore an additional +3dB in the 100Hz to 400Hz frequency range was required,’ continues Mr Topuzdag. ‘This was solved by adding 85 JBL CBT 70JE-1 woofers to the system.’

The 225 JBL CBT speakers are powered by 32 Crown CDi 6000 amplifiers. ‘The overall power of the system is almost 160,000W which actually exceeds power requirements of the speakers,’ said Mr Topuzdag. ‘However, this extra power was required to compensate for loss of power over long cable runs. In certain areas we had to lay 500m of cable to reach some speaker locations.’

The entire system is controlled by a single BSS Blu 160 signal processor. According to Mr Topuzdag, this equipment was particularly useful when it came to using different delays for different speakers.

The final part of the system is 225 140V/600W custom made line matching transformers from Edcor. ‘Each speaker had to pair with an Edcor custom made transformer to match the high amplifier voltage output,’ explains Mr Topuzdag. ‘With such great distances we couldn’t use the speaker’s native 8-ohm impedance.’

The result the new system has produced is something Mr Topuzdag is clearly very proud of. ‘Once the system was set and we went live, the result was amazing. Not only did we have uniform SPLs throughout the mosque’s piazza, we also achieved a perfect balance of the entire frequency range,’ he smiles. ‘As a result we now have an STI better than 0.7 (for male weighting) in many locations. In fact, outside the mosque now sounds better than inside thanks to the JBL CBT 70JE-1 woofers. This is especially true with bass preacher Sheikh Ali Hudayfe and baritone preacher Sheikh Abdul Muhsin al Qasim performing.’

From Sister ROUKAYA19 in the Makkah News and Updates thread.

Sound system covers Haram prayers up to 9 km

Authorities have installed 4,000 loudspeakers all over the Grand Mosque and surrounding
areas to ensure first-class sound quality during the peak Ramadan and Haj seasons
when hundreds of thousands of worshippers flood into the holy city.
Sunday 13 July 2014

Authorities at Makkah have installed 4,000 loudspeakers all over the Grand Mosque and surrounding areas to ensure first-class sound quality during the peak Ramadan and Haj seasons, when hundreds of thousands of worshippers flood into the holy city to perform their religious rituals.

“Speakers have also been deployed in corridors and outdoor squares,” said Faras Al-Saadi, operations director at the Grand Mosque, on Saturday.

“Authorities installed 656 speakers in the mosque’s eastern corridor and in the newly opened floors for circumambulation during Ramadan,” Al-Saadi said in a statement.

“A technical committee has chosen only the most advanced brands and models after examining the most effective sound systems worldwide,” he said. “Thanks to this premium quality speakers, prayers will be heard up to 9,000 meters away, from Gaza Street to Ibrahim Khalil Street,” he said.

“The outside speakers are wind-proof, meaning sound will remain crystal clear even in rough weather. This is a very complex technical accomplishment. Special poles have been set up on several roads around the area and south of the mosque as well,” said Al-Saadi.

The loudspeakers installed at the top of the Makkah Clock Tower can be heard up to seven km away and the powerful green and white lights that go off at prayer times can be seen from 30 km, helping worshippers with hearing difficulties.
