I know its not just me, as in, I'm not the only one who gets the stare.

How many times have we given Salaam to someone and then get a stare back to say, "Huh, What was that, do I know you"

Well Hello! (Or Salaam) Yes we are giving Salaam, We aren't aliens.

Its amazing and sometimes one feels sad that they get ignored.

Has anyone bamboozled a Muslim with Salaam.

They make me laugh and upset at the same time.

I want to say so much but that will only point fingers. I can only relate to incidents that have happened with brothers and I'm sure the sisters get it too. In fact it must be harder with the Niqab and stuff.

Harder with Niqab? Women are amazing, they recognise each other and if one does Salaam, even if the women don't know each other, they will know each others Khaandaan by the time they finish their conversation.

As for Salaam. I've experienced 4 situations:

One, they stare and stare and stare until you say Salaam. Then they reply and all's good

Two, you say Salaam, they reply and then stare like you did something odd.

Three, you say Salaam, they reply and life goes on.

Four, they smile before you get to them, they say Salaam, I reply, exchange a quick sentence and move on feeling happy (this happened today, it's always nice to come across brothers who lighten up the mood)

Unfortunately, 1 and 2 is the most common in my books

Yep! happens all the time, I just remind myself that I gave the first salam and so I got the higer reward, and that keeps me going :)

There is also a fifth situation where,

I give salam first and they just look at you saying Walaiku......... and then stop as they now have now seen your face and dont recognise you and start giving you the most worst dirty look every.

Now I tend to walk toward them smiling and saying Assalamalaikum, stick my hands out to shake hands, all done while i continue to walk past.

I call it the "walk by Triple S (Smiling-Salam-Shake)" a bit like "drive by shooting" lol, This ways Ive forced them to shake hands and reply back, therefore my salam dont go missed, without a reply and they also get some reward.

Spot on.

6. You give Salaam to you know who, the Genetically Modified GM and they look at you as if you ain't Muslim because they put one of the 3 options upon you. LOL I've heard that from even scholars.

I'm gonna move this topic to add a poll, since it is a common thing.

Oh! and Salaam to you all too.

How about the other way round. My personal fav.

Walking down the road, you pass someone who knows that you are a Muslim and they stare at you "Waiting" for you to give Salaam but you just walk straight pass.

When you get stopped or asked or if Salaam is given by the other person, harshly, you reply with "Wa laykum Salaam, sorry I didn't know you were Muslim."

This is quite interesting! I never really pay attention as to how the person at the end of the salam reacts so I did a little research to find out. One person I said salam to nodded with his head to acknowledge the salam, I didn't hear him reply maybe because I did not hear or maybe he did not reply but he nodded his head to kind of say thanks for the salam. The second person I said salam to gave a similar kind of reply, but instead of nodding his head he raised his hand. Later on I was speaking to a friend, somebody walked passed us that he knew so my friend said salam to him. So the other person shook his hand. I was standing next to my friend and said salam but I never got a handshake. The fourth person did bring me a smile. I was talking to the same friend and another person came who said salam to my friend and spoke to him for a little while. Out of respect I remained quiet so that they could discuss whatever they were discussing. But before the man went he said salam to me and asked how I was so it made me happy that somebody made dua for me by wishing upon me peace, mercy and the blessings of Allah

Jazakallah brother.

It is a strange thing, try it outdoors in the streets, shopping, buses, trains etc and see the reaction we get.

Basically the above statement mentions how we should give salam to those we know and those that we don,t know and how some Muslims living in Muslim countries will only say salam to those people that they know but one should say salam to all Muslims and that it is a sunna of the Prophet S.A.W and evidence can be found in the following hadith which is narrated in Bukhari and Muslim:

الدليل :
ما رواه البخاري و مسلم أن النبي صلى الله عليه و سلم سئل أي الإسلام خير ، قال تقرأ السلام على من عرفت و من لم تعرف ، و في رواية : تطعم الطعام و تقرأ السلام على من عرفت و من لم تعرف

Narrated 'Abdullah bin 'Amr: A man asked the Prophet, "What Islamic traits are the best?" The Prophet said, "Greet those whom you know and those whom you do not know."
And in another narration it has been added feed the people

O yes and what about when you salam another muslim surrounded by non-muslims. Like ameeting at work, The facial expressions and reply you get is hillarious!!!!

All the non muslims become very quiet and intimidated and now the muslims guys under pressure and the non muslims are looking at him like, "dude, Are you going to reply back in that funny language?"

The muslim guy responds with an awkward nod of the head and if your lucky a muffled/shamed verbal reply of WailkmmmmmSmmmmm. LOL

I love winding these guys up and saying, Im sorry I see your uncomfortable with me Salaming you among your work colleagues lol.

Don't worry if no one responds, which often happens, because the person doesn't respond the angels sitting either side of his/her shoulder replies to your salam. Makes me happy when a sister replies, and makes me happy when they don't.

One thing I try and do is assess the person, because some African ladies wrap their hair thinking them to be muslim, to their horror I have made salam with them, the same with some Sikh ladies, but sometimes to my disappointment I've not made salam to someone who I've presumed to be non Muslim and they have made salam first.

During a conversation with an anti-nikabi neighbour she said, the ones in nikab are the worse they just look at you and don't even say salam!

Like the blessed salam is just sunnah for sisters in nikab.
I've probably been guilty of this a few times, not due to ignorance but mainly due to being in thought, or being mentally distracted or busy by something or another, there is nothing worse then bad guman (negative thoughts). We are also human afterall.
