There are many myths about the wrongs on sleeping in the stomach.

The tablighi have one reason, the Barelwi have one reason, science has one reason.

For me and my explanations to my children is only one reason, and for us Alhumdulillah that is sufficient.

The Prophet said Allah hates us to sleep on the stomach.

There is a scientific explanation which concludes that cot death is caused be sleeping on the stomach.

On one occasion, the prophet SAW tapped a sleeping man with his feet and told him that Allah hates us to sleep on out stomach.

I'm sure there are plenty more ahadith regarding this with references, but I was just reminded by my kids about this topic so I thought I'd share it here with you.

Allah knows best, but when I met some brothers, they were of the opinion that Shaytan sleeps with them. Could be true, but as per normal, they won't provide evidence.

The Barelwi, incase your wondering, say that shaytan sleeps and performs other acts on you too.

My kids read this so I'm keeping it clean.

Salam

Q273: To lie on the stomach
Question

Is it bad to lie on stomach and sleep?

Is it true shaytaan does something to you while you sleep if you sleep lying on stomach?

What is the sunnat way to sleep and is it true that the sunnat way has also been scientificaly proven?

Answer

It is a bad habit to lie on the stomach. The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam saw one sahabi, Hazrat Ibn Umar radhiyallahu anhu lying in the masjid on his stomach. Upon seeing this, the Holy Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam reprimanded him and said, "ﺿِﺠﻌﺔ أھلِ النارِ", that this is the way the people of Jahannam lie.

It is not true that the shaytan does something to a person while he sleeps on his stomach.

In addition, it has scientifically been proven that it is healthier for the heart if one sleeps on the right, because there is less pressure on the heart; therefore the blood flow remains normal.

Omair, Student of Darul Ifta. Checked and approved by Shaykh Abdur Raheem Sahib.

Jazakallah, So the Tablighi reference and the Barelwi were both wrong.

This should be a whole new discussion, but I do not wish to go there. The Tablighi youngsters have always quoted their elders. They dont seem to quote from Hadith, (which is only good to a certain extent), in case they get something wrong. But when they quote someone, its not always true. Sometimes I find it hard to take from Tablighi youngsters as they they have no daleel. Where as you have the trained Salafi, who all they talk bout is Daleels.

With regards to Science: One should not sleep on the stomach because the weight of the spine (being the heavyiest part of the body) adds pressure to the heart and for this reason many babies have died from cot death.

A quote from The Greatness of Knowledge and Ulama by Hazrat Maulana Shah Hakeem Muhammad Akhtar Saheb

[quote] Now the situation is such that everyone is a mufti. Muftis of this type are for muft (free), they do not possess knowledge. A Hadth states:

أَجْرَأُكُمْ عَلَى الْفُتْيَا أَجْرَأُكُمْ عَلَى النَّارِ

(سنن الدارمي، ج: 1، باب الفتيا وما فيه من الشدة)

"The person who is audacious in issuing fatw is audacious to enter the Hell-fire."

Such "free" muftis express their views on every issue and say: "This is my view on this issue." Today, even a person pushing a wheel-cart will say: "This is my view on this issue." Ask these who are intellectually blind if a "view" is acceptable in Islam? Is Islam something which is based on views? 'Allmah Shm rahimahullh states in his book of jurisprudence, Kitb ash-Shm, that Rasulullah (sallellaho alaihe wasallam) said that the person who is very audacious in giving a ruling without investigation is very audacious in entering Hell. You should first consult books, if you do not understand, go and consult your teachers and qualified 'ulam'. Go to them like a beggar, not like a person who is going to make objections. Ask them in a respectful manner: "Hazrat, I have a question to ask." Ask them as though you are a student. It is essential for the masses to reduce themselves like students when they ask the 'ulam'.
