The Makkah Clock

Makkah Clock's ornament designed by Jay Bonner

The Mecca Clock Tower is the tallest of the five high-rise towers in the Abraj al-Bait complex in Mecca, and at approximately 600 meters above ground, the second tallest building in the world. This clock tower has four faces – two that are square, and two that are rectangular – with a height of 43 meters.

Jay Bonner was contracted to design the ornament for the clock faces, and work closely with the design and engineering team responsible for this ambitious tower project. The ornamental design included floral designs in the corners of the square and rectangular faces, the dial, the floral designs on the hands, and the exterior ornament for the domical observatory that sits above one of the clock faces. The ornament throughout each face is glass mosaic tesserae with inset LED light fixtures for nocturnal illumination. The glass mosaics are set onto rigid carbon-fiber composite, and the floral design in each corner of the face is in high relief. The style of the floral ornament is in the pan-Islamic style first developed by Jay Bonner for the Sliding Domes at the Prophet’s Mosque in Median.

Contracted in 2007: scheduled for completion in 2011.

Bonner Design Consultancy www.bonner-design.com specializes in traditional and contemporary Islamic architectural ornament.

Jay Bonner is a recognized authority in this field. He received his MDes from the Royal College of Art in London (1983). Since graduation he has worked on many important projects in the Middle East, Europe, and the United States; including the expansion of the Prophet’s Mosque (al-Masjid al-Nabawi) in Medina, Saudi Arabia; the current expansion of the Grand Mosque in Mecca (Masjid al-Haram); the Abraj al-Bait Clock Tower in Mecca; the movable minbar for the Kaaba; the International Medical Center in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia; the Data Darbar in Lahore, Pakistan; the New Senate House in Rawalpindi, Pakistan; the Ismaili Centre in London; and the American Institute of Mathematics Research Conference Center in California.

Quote:
The Ministry of Rural and Municipal Affairs will this year implement development projects in the holy sites worth over SR1.4 billion

The mayor said real estate investors had a right to compensation if the approved building height of the towers would later be reduced for any reason.

He said the municipality deemed that buildings close to the Grand Mosque should not be very tall, while those away from it could have any height.

A bit late for that now.

It is narrated by Hadrat 'Abdullah Ibn 'Umar (رضي الله عنهما) that the Holy Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said: "When the belly of Makkah will be cleft asunder, and through it will be dug river-like pasages (i.e. tunnels), and when the buildings of the Holy City of Makkah will rise higher than its mountains, then know that the time of fitnah is near at hand."

Until recently the people were not able to understand the real meaning of this hadeeth, but now the meaning has become quite clear to them.

The Royal Makkah Tower Clock’s features include a light display that copies the changing colours of the original, and a bespoke eight-day movement.

Dent, the firm which made the landmark Big Ben clock, said that some of the mantle clocks had been given by King Abdullah to Gulf leaders who attended the GCC summit in December

Among the recipients of the clocks were Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, prime minister of the UAE and ruler of Dubai, King Hamad of Bahrain, Sultan Qaboos of Oman, Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thani of Qatar and Kuwait’s Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmed Al Jaber Al Sabah.
