This is a reply from Mufti AbdurRahman ibn Yusuf

Assalamu 'alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu

These are some of the answers I have provided in the past on this:

It depends. I think if it is said once in a while then it is ok just like any any other dua since saying jumu'a mubarak is like saying "may Allah bless your jumu'a." However, considering it especially significant to say each week on that day is problematic.

It depends on why it is said. Those who are sending it should give another comprehensive duas instead that they understand the meaning off. It seems like these texts are sent without much thought but just as a forward much of the time. Why not give a du'a that every day is blessed?

Asslamo Allaikum Respected Mufti Ismail Moosa Saheb (HA),

In UK many Muslims send SMS (text) messages which contain some advice or some Hadeeth or simply "Jummuah Mubarak" on fridays to others Muslims.

  • Sometimes the advice, hadeeth etc is inauthentic
  • Sometimes the advice is sound and the text or Hadeeth from the Kitaab of Authentic Ulama
  • Sometimes it has some Sunnah advice like don't forget to do Ghusl
  • Sometimes its just "Jummuah Mubarak"

  1. What is legal status of this action? Is this Bid'ah? Is this Makrooh?
  2. Should these text messages be sent to people? If so, what should be the guidelines?
  3. What should be done by the person who receives them and what should be their action towards these message? Should they be deleted or forwarded?

Jazakullah Khairun

P.S: Awaiting response.

W-Salam,

Attributing something to Nabi which he did not utter is a major sin. In fact, some scholars mention that it could lead to kufr. In a Mutawatir Hadith mentioned in most books of Hadith, Nabi (Sallaho Alaihe Wassallam) said,

"Whoever intentionally fabricates things from me, he should prepare his abode in the fire."

Likewise, Imam Muslim has narrated many similar Ahadith in his Introduction.

Hereunder follows the responses to your queries:

  1. After discussing with many senior Ulama, the conclusion reached is that it will be permissible to say Jummu'ah Mubarak on condition it is not regarded as compulsory or even Sunnah and the person who does not say it is not looked down upon.
  2. Islamic information can and should be spread via SMS and emails on any day of the week.
  3. It should be confirmed that the information is authentic. This could be done by taking the information from authentic books, like Muntakhab Ahadith, or by confirming from Ulama. Merely hearing a Hadith in a bayan or taking from any book is not sufficient. Ulama should be consulted on which are reliable books, and which narrations mentioned in bayaans are authentic. Likewise, no mock should be made of any issue of the unseen. In 'friendly' SMS's it is better not to use the name of Allah, as we have seen many instances where critical statements were said.
  4. If the information is authentic, it could be passed on. If it is a joke which discusses any issue of the unseen, or the information is not authentic, or the person does not know and cannot verify from a reliable scholar, then it should be deleted.

And Allah Ta'ala knows best.

Jazakallah for the update. I guess people havnt bothered trying after somany attempts. May be thats why people like myself started searching valid Islamic forums for help. and eventually ended up posting our own understanding and knowledge for others to learn from.

In a way, I must say ALHUMDULILLAH.

Its ok for those who are learned or have even spent time at an Islamic school of somesort.

I need to rephrase my comment.

I eventually ended up posting on my blog from other qualified scholars for others to then learn from too. I then moved onto the forums with the help of sister ummi taalib, May Allah reward her immensely.

I have read somewhere and also i have been told that jumuah is like eid for the muslims...having a bath, wearing clean clothes, wearing attar ect.....this is why we wish each other Jumuah Mubarak.....

And only Allah knows best

This question should be put to the Mufti's

Asalamu Alaikum, I have been getting texs recently and been greeted with the words "jumu'ah mubarak".

First of all it is imposible for any Muslim to find something about Islam which the Prophet or the Sahabas could not verify, because no one was more guided than they were. So it is actualy a act of bidat when someone greets another with the words 'jumuah mubarak'.
Maulana Shah Hakeem Muhammad Akhtar Saheb wrote in one of his book that there was a person who made it farz upon himself to do durood shareef this number of times a day and he made his own rulling that if he does not do it for even one day, he is no longer a Muslim. Shaikh Akhtar Saheb said such a person will be put into judje by Allah in the day of judgement. It is bidah to do something like this whether it is:

* ACTS OF WORSHIP.
* FORMS OF REMEMBERENCE OF ALLAH.
* NEW BELIEF SYSTEM.

Shaykh ibn Fawzaan(May Allah preserve him)was asked:What is the rulling on sending text messages every Friday and ending with the phrase "jumu'ah mubaarak"

He replied:The early generation did not congratulate one another on Fridays, so we should not introduce anything that they did not do.
