When I used to teach kids, Fridays would be deeni discussions. I used to read from various deeni material and then discuss the main points with the kids. One discussion was on the blessings of Allah swt and being grateful.

Being grateful to Allah swt, this is something Shaytan openly declares to attack.
Shaytan clearly and openly tells Allah swt how he is going to attack the children of Adam (as) and that he will not leave any of them to be grateful to Allah swt.
Shaytan specifically mentions this quality. What does it mean to be grateful to Allah swt?
Is being grateful to Allah swt merely an act of cutting turkey and saying "Thanks God"?

Being grateful to Allah swt, showing thanks to Allah, has 3 steps:
(1) Intellectually realizing that the blessing is from Allah swt
(2) Verbally saying "Alhamdulillah" - praising Allah swt for the blessing
(3) Utilizing the blessing in the manner which Allah swt has commanded

Our eyesight is a blessing of Allah swt.
So the way to show our gratitude, the way to thank Allah swt for our eyesight is to first intellectually realize that we did not do anything to earn this, we didnt not create our own eyes, we did not give ourselves eyesight, no one except Allah swt granted us our eyes and our eyesight. So we first come to this realization intellectually.

The next step is to say Alhamdulillah for our eyesight. Imagine living in this beautiful world without having eyes, without the ability to see - how difficult life would be!

The last step is to utilize this eyesight in the manner which Allah swt has commanded.
What are the commands of Allah swt with regards to our eyesight? We have to turn to the Ulama and ask them what has Allah swt said about using our eyesight - what things are prohibited to look at? What things should we look at? The Ulama will give us a clear answer.

Now after we get this knowledge we have to apply it, we have to utilize our eyesight in the manner which Allah swt has commanded. When a person does all 3 steps then he will be said to be a shaakir, thankful, one who is grateful to Allah swt for his eyesight.

What are you thankful to Allah swt for?

This was an assignment I used to give my kids, why dont you have a go at it:

Take out a sheet of paper, I am not kidding.

Really, take out a sheet of paper, put your cell phone on silent and turn it away from you, close the television/dvd/radio, whatever you got going on turn it off.

Get a pen/pencil and start jotting down all the blessings in your life.

What are you thankful for? Write down as many blessings as you can think of.

Can you fill one page worth of blessings? How many did you list?

Ok now look back on your list, start at the top.

What is the first blessing and honestly, answer from your heart, are you really being thankful to Allah swt for this blessing?

Look at the 3 steps listed above in this post, are you carrying out those steps for this particular blessing?

Ok, now go to the next blessing you listed. Are you being thankful for that? Go down the list and see how many blessings you are truly being thankful for.
