Tips taken at the Grand Mosque under fire

'Sabq' quoted some workers at the Grand Mosque as saying they do not ask for tips but that they accept what pilgrims give them as gifts (SUPPLIED)

Monday, February 20, 2012

Workers at the Grand Mosque in Makkah, Islam's holiest shrine, have started taking tips from pilgrims, drawing criticism from Saudis and other Muslims who say such a bad habit hurts the image of the holy land.

Hundreds of workers pack the massive mosque to serve worshippers during two annual rite seasons - the Haj (pilgrimage) and Umra (mini Haj), when millions of Muslims from Saudi Arabia and other countries converge on the holy site. The workers are mostly Saudis who are appointed by the government.

"Pilgrims during Haj and Umra are now paying large tips to workers at the Grand Mosque... this phenomenon has become widespread over the past three years as it was almost non-existent before," said Hamad Othman, a Gulf pilgrim.

"The pilgrimsthemselveshavecreated thisproblem asworkershad not asked fortip before...now many workers are demanding tip."

A Saudi female pilgrim, quoted by the Arabic language daily 'Sabq', described tip-giving at the Grand Mosque as a "scandal".

"Authorities must take urgent action to deal with this...theyshould warn workers againstaccepting tip,"theunnamed pilgrim said.

"These workers are becoming more rude...they are annoying pilgrims by insisting on having tips....This is a holy site which should remain clear of such bad practices...they are harming the image of the whole country."

Another Saudi pilgrim,Mohammed Al Qahtani, agreed by urging authorities to monitor those workers to ensure they stop asking for tips. "Whether they call it a tip or a gift, thisisnegatively affecting theholy site...Saudi Arabiaisa rich countryand ishometo theholiest land sothesepracticesshould be immediately halted."

'Sabq' quoted some workers at the Grand Mosque as saying they do not ask for tips but that they accept what pilgrims give them as gifts. "We consider the money offered to us by the pilgrims as a gift in exchange for the services we offer them," one Saudi worker said.

Asked about his earnings from such "gifts", he said they could exceed SR10,000 ($2,700) during Ramadan. "My salary is around SR5,000 ($1,350)a month, which we believeisnot enough to support ourfamilies." Hesaid pilgrimsfrom otherGulfcountries are the most generous. "Once, a pilgrim from a nearby Gulf country gave me a tip of SR2,000 ($540)."

The above info clarifies it quite well. Try to read through it again. In my case, I am allowed as my company allows it.

I wasn't too sure if I was going to post this, I'm not bragging, but it just shows to what extent people go to to earn rewards for the sake of Allah.

I was doing my job as normal on a huge building site and was called away to help an old client. Unfortunately, the client had issues with the internet speed and WiFi, so my job was to only replace the WiFi access point. This isn't my job but I was sent there to help plug it in. The WiFi was preprogrammed. Anyways, it didn't work. Lol.

Then the client (elderly Arab lady) asked me if I read the Urdu version of the Quran, Pakistani/South African print. So I said yes. She then pulled out her iPhone and showed me some apps with this type of Quran, she wanted to make sure that I did read this type so I pulled out my HTC and showed her my 13 line Quran.

So, she was pleased and said she was doing it for Sadaqah (Jaariyah) and was giving these qurans to people like me, Alhumdulillah very pleased.
As the WiFi didn't work, this meant I had to go back. So she said to me, inshaAllah when you come back, I will download all the Urdu qurans, Hadith books duas etc etc and she will pay for all the apps and give them to me. I praised her intention, gave her dua and told her that I don't have an iPhone.

She knew, as she saw my HTC and said something that took me by surprise. She said when I come back to her, there will be an iPhone waiting for me with all the apps (pro) downloaded.

When I went back, I did what I had to do and was about to leave.

She took a brand new iPhone 4S 64g out and said, "This is what I promised you". SubhanAllah. Amazing. (her intentions and heart). She went throughout the phone with me explaining what each app did, Alhumdulillah. She had practically downloaded everything she said plus much much more, all beneficial.

That's not all, she went to her purse to pay for our services (we did a lot more work than just add an access point.) And she gave me 100. I refused to accept the money but she insisted and said that it was for coming twice, SubhanAllah.

MashaAllah, she said she has given nearly 200 iphones with preloaded apps as sadaqah.

May Allah reward her for her intentions and give her Jannatul firdous.

Oh and I was about to leave she wanted to upload an image of the kabah with the sunset that she personally took. Very nice MashaAllah. (i showed her my pictures from the thread, very impressed)

It's a Quran with this layout. You can also download the Android app for it.

It's considered as data until the mushaf appears therefore permitted and can be taken anywhere. However, wudhu would be needed to touch the text, if you don't have wudhu, then you would need to scroll from the sides. Allahu alum. But this is what I have learnt from my muftis.

A friend of mine who works with me/us was given the good news of Hajj by his client, The wife of the King of Saudi.

He has done a few installations for her homes here in London and was pleased with his work.

She had asked him if he had performed Hajj or not, when he replied in the negative, she asked him if he would like to go.

It is a dream come true for many, but this is amazing. He has been invited by her royal highness.

He has sent off his passport etc as requested, and is just waiting for its return. They will provide the Visa, Accomodation etc etc for him and his wife.

MashaAllah, May Allah reward them all and accept their Hajj as well as all those intending to go this year and every year.
