Salaamualaikum warahmattullah

I agree with the ulama that prohibit women from driving. No offense to women. It's just out of safety for women and to protect them from fitnah. Yes, there are people who will say that people will still seek fitnah around this prohibition but I feel that if women were allowed to drive then more fitnah like free mixing will creep in. May allah protect us all and especially our sisters in Islam.

In UK many ulamah...are not against women driving, taking into consideration the safety aspect, as many destinations are not safe for women to walk to. Aswell as the burden upon menfolk who work long hours, school runs, appointments, meetings....I'm not discussing driving for leisure here, only for necessity and need. As most families do not live with extended family, and have to drive out of necessity.

Jazakallah for everyones responses

What I was trying to highlight was the fact that it is a sign of judgement day!

The world will not come to an end until ...................'When you see women seated on saddles (i.e. riding horses and in this age, driving cars);

Asslamo Allaikum,

With the greatest respect to our dear respected and beloved Shaykh (Mufti) A.S. Desai (HA) and may Allah (SWT) give him long life and prosperity.

  1. The wording which Hazrat (HA) is proposing IS NOT EVEN a Hadeeth! لعن الله الفروج على السروج has no basis in it as Imam Ibn Abideen (AR) says: عن الله الفروج على السروج " ذخيرة . لكن نقل المدني عن أبي الطيب أنه لا أصل له
  2. Meaning wise you can say that this means that a woman cannot resemble men in their act as explained on askimam (here) and Hanafi Madhab restricts women riding animals except in time of war and emergency etc
  3. The exact same wording is used in an authentic Hadeeth in Musnad of Imam Ahmed saying "سيكون في آخر أمتي رجال يركبون على سروج كأشباه الرحال ينزلون على أبواب المساجد نساؤهم كاسيات عاريات على رؤوسهم كأسمنة البخت العنوهن فإنهن ملعونات لو كانت وراءكم أمة من الأمم لخدم نساؤكم نساءهم كما خدمتكم نساء الأمم من قبلكم meaning, "Abdullaah ibn Amr ibn (RA) said, I heard the Prophet of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم said, “In the last [part] of my nation there will be men who ride on means that resemble saddles.  They will alight at the doors of the mosques.  Their women are clothed but naked.  On their heads are [what appears to be] like the humps of [lean] camels.  Curse them for they are cursed.  If there were a nation from the nations to come after you, your women would serve them, just as the women of the nations that were before you served you. [Ahmed]”
    1. Problem: Since the exact same words are used but the prophecy is REVERSED according to the logic of Hazrat Mufti Saheb (HA) riding in cars to the Masjid should be declared Haram!
  4. If we are to take this statement (this is not a Hadeeth) literally as Hazrat (HA) is doing then we have two problems:
    1. Problem 1: It would become Haram for women to ride anything because it says riding on saddles and saddles are cars then even passenger seats are saddles
      1. Hazrat Mufti Saheb (HA)  first needs to authenticate this statement and then need to calrify as to where is he deriving the point that driving in the driver seat is forbidden but riding in the passenger seat is permissable using the EXACT same words?
    2. Problem 2: It conflicts with clear authentic Hadeeth of Saheeh Bukhari

“The best women who ride camels are the women of Quraysh.”  [Bukhari]

So how can one Hadeeth praise the women who ride saddles and "the other" statement mean to condemn them???

That's a whole new topic!

Ok guys, Alhumdulillah, this topic has been cleared up for my personal benefit, so lets change gear and go forward, and if you prefer to remain neutral, then that's fine too.

Brother Abu Mohammed, your thread includes a poll that elicits opinions on the topic and I think that's why some of us made comments on women driving in general as opposed to replying directly to your OP. Sorry about that. Speaking for myself, I don't have Islamic knowledge on this topic so making a comment would have been inappropriate.

I guess you're right!

The poll was done as it was something new at the time.

But hey, MashaAllah, we have some really smart sisters here, Alhumdulillah.

May Allah give us all better understanding and increase us in knowledge

By the way, for all those who are feel women make worse drivers... I'd call your attention to the difference between insurance (mandatory) rates for men and women - especially young men. Now, there have been some recent changes across the board when it comes to insurance but the fact remains: men are a bigger risk when it comes to insuring drivers. Also, I deal with motor vehicle collisions and most of the at-fault drivers I've come across (in files) are men... just saying!

Very true and no denying it.

But could it just be because the husband leaves home "with" the car keys or is it because there are less women drivers around....

Just kidding!

There are some brilliant women drivers around, just that we never see or hear of them. Just kidding again!

May Allah سبحانه وتعالى make us all safe drivers and take care of us and those around us when we drive.

I remember a long time ago a friend saying that his teacher was of the opinion that it is not advisable for unmarried women to drive a car, and their is karaahat, not due to hijab but because of the likelihood of the women's hymen breaking when driving over humps. I think in the fiqh kitab Al-Hidaya there is something mentioned about the dislike of unmarried, virgin women riding horses because of the posibbility of the hymen tearing (please correct me if this is not stated in Hidaya) and this is the analogy he uses as to why unmarried women should not really drive.

Honestly, that's absurd.

If she is a passenger, then? Will the speed bump not do anything on the passenger side?

If they used this for a bike rider, then Okay, fine, it would make sense, a little bit!
