Asslamo Allaikum,

We had a baby girl in December last year and my mother wanted to name it "Hajar"

While in our (Indian/Pakistani) culture the name is "Hajra" for girls.

The name of the wife of Sayyidina Ibraheem (RA) & mother of Ismail (AS) is mentioned as "Haajar" in Saheeh Bukhari and Imam Ibnul-Hajr Asqalani (RA) says that the name is Aramaic and he actually comments on it etc.

So we have named her "Haajar" in line with what is mentioned in Hadeeth but the Indian/Paksitanees won't stop commenting that it should be "Hajra"...

Q1) Why in our culture did "Haajar" became "Hajra"?

Q2) Haj"i"ra in Arabic would mean a woman who does Hijra but what is "Hajra"? But even Haj"i"ra isn't her name, its a characterstic

Q3) All other names of Sayyibiyat and wives of Prophets (AS) are the same in Urdu i.e. Maryam, Fatima, Khadeeja, why did this specific name went from "Haajar" to "Hajra"? Even in Urdu Tafseers they say "Hajra" when that is not her name???

Incidentally Arabs always use the word "Haajar" and I called a Shaykh in Madina and he was like "What is Hajra?"

All Scholars of Hadeeth also know that "Haajar" is the correct word.

Any help would be appreciated.

P.S: Some people put an "h" at the end to make it Hajrah.

Mufti Zarwali Khan (HA)'s says:

Q) Which name out of two Haajar or Hajra is correct?

A) Hajra must be the name of one of your women but the name of the wife of Sayyidina Ibraheem (AS) is Haajar and not Hajra!

Wa Alaykum Salam,Ok I see, as a live Q&A session, he said it in a joking manner. As a written statement, it just seemed very odd but yes, you did translate it correctly.I would have translated it similar:
