McDonalds pondering halal menus Posted by Imran Azam 18th December 2006
McDonalds are planning to offer halal products for the first time in Britain.
The firm's UK boss said the fast food giants were "working really hard" towards providing a halal menu for its Muslim customers.
Chief Executive Steve Easterbrook said: "It is a really complicated area. Different religious groups have different interpretations of what halal meat is. We need to ask about animal welfare and preparing halal meat. We want to be entirely comfortable in genuinely offering it."
McDonalds confirmed there was no official launch date but sales doubled when the company introduced a halal menu in Melbourne, Australia.
There is concern from animal rights groups that the method of slaughter under Islamic law is cruel to animals. This is despite the findings of a study at Hanover University which revealed, that animals suffer less pain when slaughtered under Sharia law, compared to conventional Western methods where animals are stunned and shot with a 'captive bolt pistol.'
