Dar-ul-Uloom seminary issues edict, says Quranic ringtones violate Islamic law

Clerics at the Dar-ul-Uloom seminary in Deoband have issued an edict banning the use of Quran verses or Muslim call to prayers as ringtones, saying doing so violates Islamic law.

"Quran verses are not meant for entertainment," seminary official Mohammed Asumin Qazmi said on Saturday. "Anyone who persists in using these should be ostracised from society," Qazmi said from Saharanpur, near Lucknow. Mufti Badru Hasan, a leading cleric in Lucknow, said he whole-heartedly supported a ban on such ringtones.

"One should hear the complete verse of the Quran with a pious mind and in silence. If it is
used as a ringtone, a person is bound to switch on the mobile, thus truncating the verse halfway," he said and added, "This is an un-Islamic act."

Ringtones with Quran verses or the call to prayers are popular among Muslims in Uttar Pradesh.
They are most commonly used by people in their mid 40s and 50s, said Mukesh Sinha, a mobile phone company executive.

Many users consider the religious tunes a reminder of their faith. Bank manager Faiz Siddaqui uses Quran verses as a ringtone.

"Whenever my cell phone rings, I hear these verses that put stress on the values of hard work and honesty, and I feel closer to my religion," Siddaqui said.

wow, who would have thought??
my sister has my 5 yr old daughter praying ayatul kursi as a ring tone for when family members call her. my mum has it too. she likes it as it gets her praying and she gets to listen to a sweet innocent child praying!!

i tell you whats worse, in saudi, while ppl are performing their tawaaf, they are talking on their mobiles. it rings or they make calls. (sorry for changing subject)

although for a very few it may be a tool for learning but for the vast majority it has become a form of entertainment and hearing the words of allah when the phone rings has become a trival thing to majority of people who use it as a ringtone. adaab and ihmeyat of the words of allah has totally gone.

I used Quran verse as my mobile ring tone, it was only once when I went to the toilet And didn't realise I had my phone with me and it went off (Allah forgive me) I almost broke my phone trying to switch it off. From then I realise I stopped using it; you end up become sinful unwillingly.
I know its can be better having a Quranic ring tone rather then a musical one ( as I had a decision about this with my friends) the conclusion I come out with is have a nasheed I'm not sure if would be ok to use nasheed?? maybe someone has a better one?

i use nasheeds...but i am not one to take my phone into the toilet... i would say nasheeds are okay...otherwise its commit sin and have the tones which come on the phone already! AstaghfirULLAH

its all about being careful BUT having the Holy Quran as a ringtone thats unacceptable!

vibration is for when in quite pIaces i.e meetings, musjids etc not reaIIy ideaI in having it aIways on as most of the time you dont even reaIise its vibrating

ring ring or beep??!?
nasheeds now a days have alot of musical instruments. even then, the good old nasheeds actually reminds one of the topic sung about. e.g closeness to Allah, death, the Prohet etc
whereas now a days, nasheeds have the musical istrument played in the background. the nasheed becomes haraam. also this leads to plain entertainment!!

when i listen to a nasheed, i try to ponder over the words.
