Salaam,

Yes I have also heard this somewhere... can't remember where, but pumpkin is certainly listed in the foods which the Prophet Muhammd SAW used to eat. [will try to look it up]

So I guess, if they're on offer on November 1st, it'd make sense to pick up a few and eat it with the intention of fulfilling a sunnah.

Just a suggestion.

Fee amaanillah

found this on islamicity (which i know is a kinda salafi salafi) ;-

"We know, for example, that the Prophet liked to eat pumpkins. Is it a Sunnah to eat them? What if a person does not like their taste? Is he at fault?

The answer is that it is not a Sunnah to eat pumpkins and a person who goes through life without tasting pumpkins misses no reward and will not be asked about this omission, as it were. Otherwise, you would have seen vast areas of agricultural land in the Muslim world devoted to planting pumpkins so that all Muslims may follow the example of the Prophet. This is not the case, because Allah knows that He has created people with different tastes and many of them may not like the taste of pumpkins. I have chosen this as a very clear example. There are many similar ones"

but then also found this on a quite a few sites :-

"5123. It is related that Anas ibn Malik said that a tailor invited the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, to some food he had prepared. I went with the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, to that food and he brought the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, barley bread and soup which contains pumpkin and dried meat. I saw the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, following the pumpkin around the dish and I have loved pumpkin since that day."

Thumama reported that Anas said, "I began to collect the pumpkin in front of him."

5123 is i think a reference to something in Bukhari :-

I'm not sure why it was deleted. Probably an accident by one of the authorizers. I've restored it for you.

Bottlegourd is the English name for Doodhi.

Pumpkin is also a type of gourd.

They are both different.

The Prophet did eat a type of gourd hence they are Sunnah.

(that's why in guji's especially you hear: "doodhi kha, Sunnat che" - eat doodhi it is sunnat)

As Allah is Merciful, and if you have intentions of fulfilling a Sunnah by eating any type of gourd I'm sure you will be rewarded.

Allah Knows best.

I remember hearing the following many years ago about Hadhrat Yunus a.s, when he was washed ashore from the mouth of the fish/whale he found himself under a doodhi tree, which he ate from until he became healthy.

Maybe the more knowledgable amongst us can clarify and determine whether what i remember is correct?

Don't know about Doodhi it could be .....

but...

When Allah made the whale eject Yunus AS, he was sick so Allah also made a ways of shifa for him through a vine gourd:

"And lo! Yunus verily was of those sent ( to warn). When he fled into the ladenship, then drew lots and was of those rejected, the fish swallowed him while he was blameworthy, and had he not been one of those who glorify Allah, he would have tarried in its belly till the Day of Resurrection, then We cast him on a desert shore while he was sick and We caused a tree of gourd to grow above him, and We sent him to a hundred thousand (folk) or more. And they believed, therefore We gave him comfort for a while." (27: 139-148)
