Leaders demand an apology from Straw

FAITH leaders have organised protests to demand Jack Straw publicly apologises for his comments last week.

The Blackburn Mosques Forum and Muslim Council of Blackburn have organised a demonstration, to coincide with Mr Straw's advice surgery at Bangor Street Community Centre, at 9am on Saturday.

Organisers are being encouraged to arrive by the centre from 8am so they can demand a public apology when the MP arrives.

Women should attend at the Calder Street entrance and men the Norwich Street entrance.

Protests will also take place at Mill Hill Community Centre and Little Harwood Community Centre at 3pm and 5pm on Friday. Hanif Dudhwala, of Troy Street Mosque, Blackburn is one of those organising the Saturday protest.

He said: "We feel Mr Straw has no right to ask any Muslim woman to lift her veil.

"She is following her religious teaching and Mr Straw should respect that."

cant reaIIy see much happening. They stiII voted for him when he was foreign sec and was an extremeIy vocaI supporter of the war on iraq and the wider so caIIed war on terror.

Muslim groups have abandoned a protest planned over Jack Straw's veil
remarks after police threatened them with court action, protest leaders said.

The demonstration was due to coincide with the politician's surgery in his
Blackburn constituency on Saturday morning, but has now been cancelled.

Moulana Hanif, from the Blackburn Mosques Forum, said Lancashire police told
him they were unable to manage more than 500 demonstrators.

"The numbers were expected to be around 8,000 - to protest about his
comments over the veil," he said.

"The police said there was 'no way' they could handle that number of people
around the community centre.

"The police said that if we were to go ahead with more than 500 they might
even apply for a court order to prevent the demonstration because they
couldn't police it."

He said the protesters tried to find a different venue but were told by senior
officers the force needed three or four weeks notice to organise policing that
number of people.

Supt Tim Jacques from Lancashire police said their were "safety" concerns
about the protest.

"We will do whatever we can to allow peaceful demonstrations to take place
and to ensure minimum disruption to the community," he said.

"Our overriding concern is safety, including that of those attending any
demonstration, those wanting to use public buildings or attend any meetings
where Mr Straw is present and importantly members of the public wanting to
carry on with their daily routine unhindered."
