recent research shows that obesity and smoking make a person biologically older than slim non-smokers of the same age, researchers have said.

Assalamu alaikum

Sometimes being Fat is not totaly upto a person sometimes it can be predisposed in the genes so in many cases its not really fair to say 'who wants to b fat?' I dont think anyone would want to be, but there remains a problem that a vast majority of the populations that we live in today are, sometimes not out of choice but out of health complications...suffering from this problem..so I guess the discussion could now move away from why people are suffering from this problem to HOW we can help as MUSLIMS...Its importanat to remember that MUSLIMS are also affected by obeisety and fat problems especially cuz of the amount of ghee n stuff we consume in our cooking and the asian or shud I say more Guji mentality that u shud eat drink and die...

So what do you guys think we shud do....its our duty to help our fellow muslims, rite?

Wa Alaykum Salam,

There are many unhealthy people (fat) who give up. They become extremely lazy. I know a few personally who drive to the next street. or even down the road.

If any steps were to be taken, it would be to become more physical in my view.

I agree with your points too.

Jazakallah khair for your points brother..

hmmm...Its true that many people give up out of thinking that its too late or they cant do anything about it now..and that even if they do try, they wont b able to achieve what they want...I think its importana to think about a number of things here....

Firstly as a MUSLIM is is YOUR duty to maintain your body...not just for the health reasons but in order to do your ibaadah properly. If you do have weight problems u may often find it difficult to pray in the standing position therfore having to sit etc...This should b the first motivational step I think in convincing anyone who wants 2 really loose wight to do so...in addition 2 this I think that its important 2 understand that our ibaadah is our link with Allah سبحانه وتعالى so we shud do all that we can 2 facilitate making that link easier 2 achieve by freeing our minds from all wordly worries and matters

Second point...People with such problems may have low self esteem..at this point I would say this is the BEST time for you to initiate your change...B the change that u want 2 b....Leave everything (im talking about the stress, etc) up2 Allah سبحانه وتعالى...for verily he knows what is best for you...

With every hardship comes ease...bear that in mind and realise that all that happens is a blessing..Allah سبحانه وتعالى tests those whom he loves through any means..overcome this test by turning to Him and Him only...every hardship is a blessng in diguise...remember that..never feel like your not ur worth....U only have Allah سبحانه وتعالى to please...

This gettin a bit long but lastly....Br. Yasin u mentioned that soem people are not physically active...well this is where I think the community and families have a role to play....U c...as a community we should propogate a healthy lifestyle and tackle the problems taht we face as an ummah...its no good thinking the problem will clear itself up...If we know that we have a problem of say obeisty or other weight problems surely we as a community shoudl accomodate this by for exapmle providing and running classes that tackle this problem yaani...exercise classes, healthy eating classes or even jus groups where people can discuss things.. Secondly as family if u have a family member who does suffer from one of these issues U are the first to help them..U shud motivate them enough not to take the car to the next street..u shud explain the importance of keeping healthy...U shud do everything possible to make them undertsand that this problem may b distancing them from Allah سبحانه وتعالى in term of ibadah etc... If its self inflicted..yaani just by eating and isnt a genetic thing isnt this also a form of suicide? ( This is just a thought..Br. Yasin could u please clarify by the appropriate sources whether it is or isnt a form of suicide?Jazakallah khair.)

Khair...Ill let u guys think about it....Inshallah

I think you mean remind them about health issues. Skinny is not healthy, and neither is fat. But from the 2, skinny is the healthier. Specially in the west, control in eating is almost impossible to many. Also then intention in health should always be to do more Ibaadah and carry out our duties in every way. Many would agree that it's not as easy to do so when fat. If the intention is to be attractive to the public and 'pull' as they say then being fat is a blessing.

Salam, If u stik 2 d following advice given by our beloved nabi (saw) im sure there wont b any probs Inshallah! Umar (RA) said: "Beware of filling your stomaches with food & drink, for it is harmful to the body & causes sickness & laziness in performing prayers. Be moderate in both food & drink, for that is healthier for your bodies & furthest removed from extravagance. Allah سبحانه وتعالى will hate the fat man (one who revels in a life of luxury), & a man will not be condemned until he favours his desires over his religion" Our beloved nabi (saw) also advises moderation in food & drink in the following hadith: "There is no worse vessel for the son of Adam to fill than his stomach, but if he must fill it, then let him allow one-third for food, one-third for drink, & one third for air" Oh yeh and dont 4get the xercise! & thats cumin from a pharmacist Inshallah, u dont wanna b on the FAT pills! wassalam

When I was reading this arguement, that's the first thing that came to my mind, well said. I also think that keeping to house hold chores, I guess this would in general apply to females, would keep you healthy and active.

I think the main point to be made here is that we should stick the sunnah, keeping healthy is essential as we are vice regents, that doesn't mean just looking after the planet, it also means looking after ones own self.

That was my opinion anyway, :)

Remember me in your duaas.

Interesting... firstly, i found it berry great difficulity to read ur postage! I never disputed the fact, Fat is Cute. "Y is being fat such a BIG issue?" (Pun of the Topic)
I didn't know my FATTY issues tissues would have created such a havoc, i ask maafi. But do me a fava...English seekho yaar! Khuda de vaste!
And correction... AAP KA APNA WASIM.
