WHEN IS EID AL FITR 1447 / 2026 IN THE UK?
PREDICTED DATES

MOSQUES WHICH FOLLOW SAUDI: Friday 20 March

MOSQUES WHICH FOLLOW MOROCCO: Saturday 21 March

LOCAL UK SIGHTING: Saturday 21 March (with a very small chance for Friday 20 March if the UK sees a “record-breaking” moon)

Explanations below.

*

FOLLOW SAUDI - FRIDAY 20 MARCH

UK mosques following Saudi will do Eid on Friday.

Saudi started Ramadan a day too early, and will look for the moon a day too early on Wednesday 18 March. The moon will be before conjunction, thus Saudi will declare “not seen”, and complete 30 days of Shaban.

FOLLOW MOROCCO - SATURDAY 21 MARCH

Morocco will look for the moon on Thursday 19 March.

The moon will be very, very hard to see (Yallop Code: C - see diagram). We expect no crescent sightings, and so they complete 30 days for Ramadan and Eid on Saturday 21 March.

For context: Morocco has never seen such a thin moon in decades of sighting records. They accept naked eye sightings only.

LOCAL UK SUNNAH SIGHTING - SATURDAY 21 MARCH (though Friday is possible).

Our UK moonsighters will search for the moon on Thursday 19 March.

We are in a similar position to Moroocco with a moon which is extremely difficult to see (Yallop Code: C - see diagram).

Therefore we expect Eid to be on Saturday 21 March

However, there is a thin chance we could see the moon if we have perfect weather conditions - and if we do, Eid would be on Friday.

Seeing such a moon would break a record for us - and we will try our best!

Anything can happen…Exciting!
And Allah knows best.

Regarding Moon sighting, other countries have adopted what was started by Saudia.
Niger, Mali, Afghanistan, khyber Pakhtoon are declaring Eid a day before Saudi (on 28th of Saudi Ramadhan). Astronomically the moonset was hours before sunset.

Sahih Muslim:

.............And he who introduced some evil practice in Islam which had been followed subsequently (by others), he would be required to bear the burden like that of one who followed this (evil practice) without their's being diminished in any respect.

Look for the new moon of Shawwal on Thur. March 19 (Eid probable for March 20)
crescentwatch.org
======================

Crescentwatch encourages everyone to go out to look for the new crescent moon (hilal) on the evening of Thursday, March 19th (after 29 days of Ramadan) in anticipation of the beginning of the Islamic month of Shawwal and the arrival of Eid al-Fitr.

Qualified Muslim astronomers and reliable visibility forecasts indicate that on Thursday evening, a "naked-eye" (unaided) sighting of the new crescent moon will be probable in all of North America.

If the moon is sighted on Thursday, March 19th, Eid al-Fitr will occur on Friday, March 20th. Otherwise, we will complete 30 days of Ramadan, and Eid will fall on Saturday. (Check the visibility forecast for your region here.) We will post our final determination on Thursday here as soon as possible, but no later than 8:00 pm PT.

Please go out to look for the new crescent moon and submit your moonsighting report here. The crescent (hilal) would be visible shortly after sunset, above the area where the sun had set. It is a beautiful experience to sight its emergence, and it is a sunnah of our noble Prophet ﷺ that we hope the ummah revives.

* Crescentwatch adheres to the traditional principle that Islamic lunar months begin and end based on the confirmed, naked-eye sighting of the new crescent moon.

if positive moon sighting news reaches from Canada/US to countries on left side of DateLine, it is impossible for them to celebrate Eid.

Afghanistan Announces That Tomorrow, Thursday, Is Eid al-Fitr Day

The Supreme Court in Afghanistan announced that the Central Crescent Sighting Committee affiliated with the Islamic Emirate confirmed, based on its information, the sighting of the crescent of the month of Shawwal, and accordingly, the court decided that tomorrow, Thursday, is the first day of the blessed Eid al-Fitr.

Although the moon had set in "Kabul," the capital of Afghanistan, 35 minutes before sunset, and the conjunction of the month of Shawwal had not yet occurred, the official announcement stated that testimonies were received from a large number of witnesses regarding the sighting of the crescent of the month of Shawwal today, Wednesday, March 18, 2026 CE, after sunset, and accordingly, Afghanistan announced that tomorrow is Eid al-Fitr day in the country.

This confirms that disregarding science and relying entirely on witness testimonies may lead to major errors.

The attachment in the Afghan language is the official statement, and the attachment in Arabic is its translation.

Science is not an Usool of Deen. In this Ummah, the اعتبار is for testimony. Regardless of what a person may have seen, if their sighting is accepted according to the Sharīʿah, it is valid.

Please do not conflate our statements to be an endorsement of the Saudi batil calculation methods.

On the authority of Abu Huraira رضي الله عنه, Nabi ﷺ said:

“Fasting is the day when you all fast, breaking the fast is the day when you all break your fast, and Eid al-Adha is the day when you all offer the sacrifice.” - Tirmidhi

From Abdullah ibn Umar رضي الله عنهما, that Nabi ﷺ said:

“We are an unlettered nation; we do not write nor do we calculate. The month is like this and like this, meaning sometimes it is twenty nine days and sometimes it is thirty.” - Bukhari

The Crescent Council of Canada is aware of reported sightings in Afghanistan, Mali and Nigeria however is of the view that those are sightings of the waning crescent not the new crescent hence will not be accepting those reports.
