Excerpt from Abul Hassan Ali Nadwi’s books. Simplicity is not often talked about but vital part of faith.
Speaking of Aurangzeb’s piety and simplicity in Mogul India, author Manucci says:
“The king sleeps for three hours only, on getting up offers his usual prayers that occupy an hour and a half. Every year he would allot time where he fasted, gave charity, slept on the ground. He would eat once. His clothes were plain, wears few ornaments nothing but a small feather in middle of his turban and large precious stone in front. He wears no strings of pearls. His coats are of very moderately priced material, his each gown does not exceed ten rupees in cost”.
Last days of this pious emperor have been described by historians in book Maasir i Alamgiri (Will of Aurangzeb):
“In the fifty first year of his rule, 1118/1707, he had fever for four days yet he performed all five daily prayers with the congregation.
He wrote a will giving directions upon his last rites. I leave four and a half rupees out of my earnings by sewing caps which should be spent on the death shroud,
while 805 rupees earned by copying the Quran should be distributed to the poor and the needy.
After morning prayers on Friday, 28th of Dhul Qadah, fifty first year of his rule, he was engrossed in remembrance of God. A few hours later his rosary or prayer beads fell silent, as God answered his prayers (to meet Him)”.
Once Auranzeb RA was inspecting the market disguised as an ordinary person. It started raining, he took shelter near a shop. A non muslim shop keeper asked Aurangzeb to help him in moving heavy things inside the shop. After the job was over, the shop keeper offered a quarter as labor for the work.
Once his shaykh visited his palace, Aurangzeb offered that quarter (25 paise) as gift to his teacher. Everyone was shocked, why a quarter? king would have offered gold, pearls and diamonds?
jazakallah to the brothers for posting about this friend of Allah Taala who inshallah will enjoy the shade of the Arsh of Allah Taala on the Day of Judgment due to his commitment to justice.
Then Aurangzeb moved out of Delhi on military expeditions for 14 years. After his return he came to know that his Shaykh is now a wealthy farmer. Shaykh visited Aurangzeb, he asked the shaykh how things changed in 14 years.
Shaykh said "first tell me about that quarter (1/4 of a rupee)".
Aurangzeb narrated the whole story how he earned them through hard work.
Shaykh Mulla Jeevan RA replied "now I know the reason how a investment of a quarter in farming made me a rich man, the seed was clear, taahir, earned through sweating, that too by a king"
Barakah is in Taahir money, it could be one quarter of a rupee/pound/dollar.....
This cannot be undone and I am sure it will be greatly appreciated.
