السلام عليكم و رحمة الله و بركاته

If someone were to ask me which fiqh school I follow, it's fairly easy for me to answer.
If they were to ask me which aqeedah school I follow, I am not sure I can truthfully answer that question.

I guess as a Hanafi, by default I am inclined to say Maturidi school, but I am not really sure what that actually means.
How should one answer such question?
Or does it really matter?

Wa alaikum assalam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu

The safest reply is to say we follow Aqeedah Tahawiya, and Maulana Khaleel Ahmad Saharanpuri RA used this text to answer questions of Aqeedah posed by the scholars of the Haramain. Maulana Saharanpuri RA's book is the famous Al Muhannad.

My humble opinion on how to approach this question:

Brother abuzayd2k suggested that one should respond by saying "I follow Aqeedah Tahawiyyah".

The problem with this is that Aqeedah Tahawiyyah is no doubt a foundational Aqeedah text of the Ahlus Sunnah Wal Jamaah, however even the Salafis use this text and misinterpret it to match their incorrect beliefs.

The best way to go about answering this question would be:

"I follow Ulama who are Maturidi, however being a layman, I do not delve into the finer, more complex details of Aqeedah. Instead, I stick to the basics such as those that are found in Aqeedah Tahawiyyah."

Maulana Qari Tayyab Qasmi R.A , who was a great Indian scholar, wrote a commentary on Aqeedah Tahawiyyah. That has been translated into English. You can find it on the following link:

attahawi.files.wordpress.com/2009/12/aqeedatu-tahawi.pdf

P.S : I would suggest downloading and saving this commentary, that I provided the link for above. There is no guarantee that it won't be taken off the Internet at some point.

Don't try to convince Salafis or anyone else. Leave that to Ulama who specialize in polemics.

Ulema can convince a person who has some basic knowledge. Salafees have negative knowledge.

Aqeedah Tahawiyyah - Keep it simple. The rest of it will create further complex arguments.

Remember the Hadith of Jibreel - That is what Our Deen is!

If they have issues with that, then let it be.

All you have to tell a salafi is that

I believe in Allāh; and His Angels; and His Books; and His Messengers; and the Day of Judgment; and that of Fate, the good and the bad given by Allāh Ta’ala; and the Life after Death.

Been meaning to add this suggestion but kept delaying it. In addition to Aqeedah Tahawiyyah, a study of Imam Abu Hanifa's رحمة الله عليه Al Fiqh Al Akbar will be very beneficial too إن شاء الله. Mufti Abdur Rahman Ibn Yusuf Mangera has a very good English commentary on it. Highly recommended.

P.S: Mufti Mangera's book is available as a free PDF if you google it however he has copyrighted it (and is firm on the issue) so ethically its better to purchase the book.
