I saw a poster which said that sinning during the sacred months is greater. Is this correct?
Answer
This is understood from the following narrations:
1) Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Abbas (radiyallahu ‘anhuma) said: “Allah Ta’ala offered distinction to four months. He has made them sacred and has increased their sacredness. He has made sinning in them more severe and good deeds carried out during these months more rewarding.”
(Tafsir Tabari; Jami’ul Bayan and Tafsir Ibn Abi Hatim, Surah Tawbah, Verse: 36. Also see: Lataiful Ma’arif, pg. 207, Al Maktabul Islami edition)
2) Qatadah (rahimahullah) said: “Good deeds carried out during the sacred months are more rewarding and oppression during these months are more severe than other months, even though oppression, in any case, is a great [sin].”
(Tafsirul Baghawi, Surah Tawbah, Verse: 36. Also see: Al Adab Fi Rajab, pg. 25)
‘Allamah ibn Kathir (rahimahullah) has also mentioned this in his Tafsir.
Is there an authentic Hadith which names the four sacred months?
Answer
Yes. Imam Bukhari and Imam Muslim (rahimahumallah) have recorded the following narration on the authority of Sayyiduna Abu Bakrah (radiyallahu ‘anhu):
“…The year consists of twelve months, four of which are sacred. Three from them are consecutive: Dhul Qa’dah, Dhul Hijjah and Muharram. And [the fourth sacred month] is Rajab…”
(Sahih Bukhari, Hadith: 4662 and Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 1679)
This cannot be undone and I am sure it will be greatly appreciated.
