What’s behind the protests in Kazakhstan?

Violent demonstrations in Kazakhstan were sparked by rising fuel prices.

A Russian-led alliance has sent troops it calls “peacekeepers” to Kazakhstan – after the president asked for help to quell mass protests across the country.

They began on January 1, after the government announced a sharp increase in fuel prices. Indignation and violence followed.

In an effort to calm the unrest, the government resigned.

The president then declared a two-week nationwide state of emergency and a shut down of the internet.

But the protests escalated into calls for a change in leadership.

Russia has sent troops to its ally Kazakhstan as part of peacekeeping forces deployed by the Moscow-headed Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) at the request of Tokayev, who has accused foreign-trained “terrorist gangs” of driving the unrest.

The United Nations has urged political leaders and protesters in Kazakhstan to refrain from violence.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has told his Kazakh counterpart Tokayev that Ankara stands in solidarity with Kazakhstan amid the continuing protests there, the Turkish presidency said.

China’s President Xi Jinping on Friday praised the Kazakhstan government’s deadly crackdown on protesters as “highly responsible” in a message to Kazakh leader Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, state media reported.

This post has been reported. It could be due to breaking rules or something as simple as bad use of bbcodes which breaks the page format. We will attend to this soon.

According to many, it's not about Fuel. That was maybe just the spark being used by vaccine sponsored news media as they always do.

Anyone who wants to read main stream media lies can simply Google Kazakhstan riots and you'll get millions of articles about fuel prices.

No need for it here. We should try get first hand accounts from Kazakhstan to know what's really happening because toppling a government overnight over fuel prices sounds as preposterous as believing a cloth mask will stop viruses.

Most believe it's after people who blocked from higher restrictions and draconian measures on covid passports and QR codes being needed to withdraw their money from banks.

Brother Yasin, how would I go about this, if I don't know anyone from Kazakhstan?

Does any one remember the details of the beginning of the so called Arab spring? I would like to understand the dynamics of Kazakhstan turmoil, even with this limited info, using a parallel between the two.

Sir, wasn't it in Tunisia? The death of a small-time seller, as a result of being harassed by the (government) system?

I do. I deal with Kazakhs regularly. Not just random Kazakhs, people of high status but not in government.

Yes, that is what I meant.

Basically Muslim societies all over the world have imbibed modern western ethos. Hence this dynamics. The inconvenient aspect for us is that we do not have our own mechanism to capitalize on this.

In Egypt the military seized the opportunity to capture the power.

In Libya the western intervention reduced the country to shambles.

In Syria the Daesh tried her bit but was ultimately ousted by Iran backed Bashar Al-Asad and Russia with NATO and even US contributing to it.

The so called Arab Spring was squandered by us in the sense that we have not figured out the way to provide a viable alternative.

Absolutely agreed, Sir. In fact, commentators have said that one of the biggest concerns for world powers is instability in Central Asia. They fear any instability will invite Islamist forces, and no one is ready to let that happen.

We are in dire need of institutions that help to create and train viable alternatives.
