The point I am making is this. I have never visited a non-muslim or Desi shop that I can recall that did not return change. No matter even if it is a penny, if they don't have a penny in their change box, I have seen them give a higher amount like a 5 pence piece in change.
This seems to be a very Desi trait recent example a few months ago, I visited a shop to buy a couple of household items. The brother in his 50's long beard dressed in Sunnah and even had an Islamic Bayaan playing.

On his till he had a large bucket collecting money for charity.
I bought two items, both costing 99pence and gave him £2 and told him to put the 2 pence change in the Chanda bucket.
He got really offended I give bag, and packaging for free. It costs more then your 2 pence in change. This is how Muslims rationalise well the customers have not asked you to give a bag for free charge them money for it and include it in the price.

Another guy at a food shop who didn't give back pennies when I told him he stated, I give free chutney with every order. Yes but you are still overcharging a penny.

The fact is as Muslims we ambassadors of the Deen, people judge Islam on our behaviour.

The conscience of a thief.

During the time of the British Raaj in India their was an English officer going on a journey,
during his travel he stopped at a predominantly Muslim town, being friday he saw the muslims heading towards the Masjid to pray jumah; The English officer was mesmerised by the beauty of the mosque, so he decided to follow the Muslims towards the Masjid and have a look inside;

After finishing his tour of the mosque the English officer was about to catch a carriage to continue on his journey. As he was about to enter the carriage a little boy, came running up to him he said: "Excuse me sir you dropped your wallet, and handed it to him.

The Englishman being mightily pleased said: "Oh young man I thank you profusely what is your name". The boy responded I am known as 'Chor' meaning Thief. The Englishman being confused asked; "Why do they call you 'Chor' for you are very honest"

the boy said: " Sir they call me a 'Chor' because I make my living by robbing people ,today I was waiting out side the mosque for some muslims to come out, so that I could steal from their pockets, by chance you came out as you were putting on your shoes, your wallet fell out, when I looked inside the wallet I could not believe my good fortune, for it contained more money than I could make in Six months, of stealing.

As I was heading home a thought pricked my conscience, I said to myself when you steal from the Muslims only you are labeled a Thief, but if you steal from this Englishman, he will leave this town extremely angry, he will then say that these followers of the Prophet Muhammad (saw) are thieves,

If I am labeled a thief I am not bothered for it is true, but I could not tolerate the name of our Prophet (saw)and his entire Ummah, being defamed as a result of my actions; Therefore I decided to find you and return your wallet."

Something to ponder.

I think it is perhaps human nature, that people often judge others through their personal experience , If we have a bad experience concerning a person from a certain race, then we condemn everyone from that race, similarly if we have a bad experience with someone from a particular religious background, we hold prejudices concerning all people who follow that religion.

So the question is if the conscience of a young thief could not tolerate the name of the Prophet (saw) being defamed as a result of his actions ,what has happened to our conscience, we have seen articles, and books being written attacking our Prophet (saw). Has our behavior not at least partly, been responsible for the reaction of the non-muslims and in inculcating a hatred in them towards Islam.

May Allah Give us the Tawfiq to Live and act, as sincere Muslims and Lovers of our Beloved (Sallallahu alaiyhi wasallam) Ameen.

In the situation, I feel, we must forego the small change.
The bag or extra chutney costs and the cost is borne by the shop keeper. For us it is 2 pence but for him, 100 bags cost a lot. And he has to pay for the bags from his profit.

I forego up to 10 rupees.

Our ladies have this problem, some honest shop keepers give exact change, but they demand bag and packaging cost. Ladies won't visit those shops claiming "they charge for packaging and the bag, others won't"

I recall a quote from a tablighi bayan

Non muslims are watching the muslims. Muslims are watching the pious, their behavior reflects the behavior of pious.

  • An impostor (bahroopia) used to disguise as different personalities and appear before Aalamgeer RA.
  • Aalamgeer has assured him if he gets cheated, the imposter will be rewarded.
  • Every time aalamgheer RA exposed him.

Once the impostor disguised himself as saint and camped on the outskirts. He got famous among the locals. Aalamgeer also got impressed and visited him. Aalamgeer offered a huge amount to the person, which he rejected.

Later he visited Aalamgeer and demanded the reward. Aalamgeer offered the reward and then asked "I offered you larger amount than the reward money and you rejected it".

The person replied "I didn't want to defame the pious".

Moral: When we have dressed ourselves as pious, let us not defame the pious.

If what I stated in the original post was not bad enough, over the last 2 years in Birmingham we have a new parking pandemic, and worse then what I previously highlighted with upto three cars per-household. Muslims have now taken to parking on Pavements and double parking as well. In my neighbourhood you can find upto six cars parked horizontally on the footpath on almost every street.

With mothers with young children and pushchairs, people with disability walkers and wheelchairs, forced to walk on the road in traffic.

Maybe so but the non-muslims see it as religious. And this is cross cultural as well, with Muslims from broad spectrum of communities all playing their part in my neighbourhood, The Mirpuris, the Chachis, the Punjabis, the Somalis, the Bengalis, the Yemenis, the Kurdish, so on and so forth. Negative behaviour is contagious with the excuse being "everybody does it."

Actions are contagious. If only people could fix their actions!

Most don't practice what they preach, but actions speak louder than words.

It seems negative and selfish actions are far more contagious, people use it as an excuse to be selfish themselves.

Very few would for example seek to emulate a neighbour who sweeps the streets, and picks up trash.

That's another issue the dirtiest most litter strewn neighbourhoods are ones where ours people's are predominant.

Nobodies denying that it is. Just highlighting the fact that as a community we have failed to inculcate and adopt Islamic values in our lives.

Ma’qil ibn Yasar reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Whoever clears harmful things from the roads of the Muslims, a good deed will be recorded for him. Whoever is awarded a good deed, he will enter Paradise.”
