So Mufti Rasheed Ahmed Ludhyanwi (RA) and Imam Tahawi (RA) are outside of Ahlus-Sunnah Wal-Jamaat for you?

I understand that you are following opinion of Ulama but it is somewhat of an lofty statement to throw other Ulama outside of Ahlus-Sunnah Wal-Jamaat over something which you are unable to prove from Qur'aan and Sunnah, even Mufti Shafi Usmani (RA) mentions it as "an opinion".

The above book Hal AshShubahat Min Al Ruqya wa Taweezat compiled by Hazrat Maulana Asadullah sahab Irani رحمة الله عليه is a detailed text on the subject of Ruqya and Taweezat, their use and issues of Magic and Sihr.

The speciality of Hazrat Maulana رحمة الله عليه was Tafseer and Amaliyat, a resident of udgaon, district kolhapur, Maharashtra state, India, where he was the Muhtamin of Jamia Khair ul uloom Hifz Al Qur'an and carried the noble task of Dars of Qur'an for which he traveled near and far.

His noble father Hazrat Maulana Abul Khair Abdus Samad Irani sahab رحمة الله عليه was an erudite scholar who learnt from the likes of Hazrat Maulana Syed Yousuf Binnori sahab رحمة الله عليه and was a close confidant and khalifa of Hazrat Maulana Badre Alam sahab Meerthi Muhajir Madani رحمة الله عليه.

Hazrat Maulana Asadullah Irani sahab رحمة الله عليه was also closely associated with Hazrat Muft Ahmed khanpuri sahab (db) and was his khalifa..

I met him twice Alhamdulillah .. once while in Jamaat in Belgaum in 1994/1995 where he attended the Masjid for dars we stayed in.. and second time at Bijapur in 1996/1997 where i had the privilege to attend the dars of Hazrat Mufti Ahmed Khanpuri sahab (db) along with Hazrat Maulana Asadullah sahab رحمة الله عليه .. i must say Hazrat Mufti sahab (db) is nothing less than a walking encyclopedia Masha Allah.. May Allah سبحانه وتعالى give him a long life with aafiya and Taufeeq for ummah to keep benefiting from him.. Ameen..

So i have translated some pages from the above book.. and hope it shall be of benefit إن شاء الله ..

Is it possible through magic to transform the (apparent) Physical state and that which is real..?


When Allah سبحانه وتعالى with his eternal power and immaculate expedience has placed adverse effects in works of magic, its influence too is rapidly manifested, then it should be known that the universal position of Ahlus sunnah wal Jamaat is that Sihr could also be effective in transforming the (apparent) Physical state.

Meaning that through works of magic the reality of a state can itself be altered. Such that when a magician through occult and worshipping (and appeasing) hidden powers could transform a Human into a donkey and vice versa, moreover, it has no intellectual or Shar’I constraints.

Therefore Imam Razi رحمة الله عليه while stating the position of Ahlus Sunnah wal Jamaat writes that:

" Ahlus Sunnah wal Jamaat has deemed it possible that a Sahir working through occult knowledge could hold the power to take flight into air, to transform a human into a donkey and a donkey into human form.

Ahlus sunnah wal jamaat also state that this does not inherently hold any power but (due to amalgamation of causes) the one who creates effect even at such instance remains the One Almighty, While the Sahir chants specific litanies and assisting phrases."

My father was in 40 days Pedal Jamaat at that time.. i had a few days off so went to visit him.. spent three days i guess.. i do not recall attending any ijtema then..

A flawless narration from Awjaz Al Masalik ila Mu’watta Malik



Qa’qaa bin hakeem relates that Hazrat Ka’ab Ahbaar رحمة الله عليه would comment had he not recited those phrases regularly then the Jews would have transformed him into a donkey. When he was inquired about those verses he narrated the following:

The Position of Allamah Tayyibi رحمة الله عليه


Hazrat Shaikh ul Hadith Maulana Muhammed Zakariyya sahab Kadhelwi رحمة الله عليه while writing the commentary of the above narration mentions that Allamah Tayyibi رحمة الله عليه remarks that it is possible Hazrat Ka’ab Ahbar meant that had he not been assisted by these phrases, then the Jews through the works of magic, would have gained the power to transform (his physical state) him into a donkey etc. (reference as above)



Who was Hazrat Ka’ab bin Ahbaar رحمة الله عليه


The compiler (of the book) says that the scholars mention Hazrat Ka’ab Ahbaar رحمة الله عليه as a famous Taba’ee. Prior to accepting Islam he was counted amongst the prominent scholars of the Jews.

He was present during the time of the messenger of Allah (saw) and according to reliable narrations, during this time, he was deprived to be honored by Islam and could not avail the opportunity to be distinguished as among the Sahabah.

Although during the period of Hazrat Umar رضي الله عنه he was blessed with faith and rendered great services. (Siyar us sahabah ; 418/7)

He excelled in knowledge and was amongst the eminent scholars of Ahle kitaab. Later on he began to display apathy towards Judaism and was conferred with the bounty of Faith, due to which, the jews witnessing his rising honor and reputation were filled with utter jealousy.

Therefore for the sake of this very jealousy and hatred they were longing through the debased act of occult to somehow transform him into a donkey. But Allah سبحانه وتعالى through the blessing of the afore phrases took him under his refuge and thus he remained safe.

An Arab poet has so well mentioned..

Meaning there is hope for all kinds of enmity to cease but the one founded on jealousy cannot be expected to end.
Hence Sihr is such a reality that we cannot deny that it is outwardly manifested and a part of absolute beliefs. The harmful effects of which even showed upon the chaste and impeccable being of Hazrat Rasoolullah (saw).



The universal opinion of ulema on transformation of Physical state.


Imam Raghib Isfahanai رحمة الله عليه writes in Mufarradat Al Qur’an that there are many kinds of Sihr. The third type of which leads to the transformation of a physical state (of an object) itself. For example to change a human or living thing into stone or animal.

Imam Raghib Isfahani رحمة الله عليه , Abubakr Jassas etc have denied that physical states could be altered through sihr and only possible through perception and illusion. The Mu’tazilites also hold similar view.

But as per the position of majority ulema, there is no rational or shar’i restriction (in holding the view of) of change in physical state. For example, a body turns into stone or gets transformed into one state to another.

And the famous philosophical dictum that the change of realities is not possible, they mean by reality as the necessary impossibilities of the possible. Where transformation is not a possibility by rational thought. While the Sihr of Pharoic Magicians in the Qur’an have been rendered as a matter of perception, this does not appropriate the necessity to deem every Sihr as imaginary and nothing more.

Certain scholars have deduced the possibility of transformation of reality through Sihr by the incident of Hazrat Ka’ab Ahbar رحمة الله عليه which has been noted in Muwatta Imam Malik on the authority of Qa’qaa bin Hakeem ( Chapter ‘At’tauz indal naum’)

The words ‘Turning into a donkey’ could have been used metaphorically as ‘making a fool’ but it is not proper to unnecessarily chose a metaphor over literal sense.

Therefore the real and evident meaning remains that had I not recited the phrases regularly, then Jewish magicians would have turned me into a donkey.

There are two things established here, one the possibility of turning a man into a donkey. Second the phrases which he was reciting carries the effect that it wields against all forms of magic. When the people inquired of Hazrat Kaab Ahbar رحمة الله عليه about those phrases, he informed them as such (Arabic text) which was mentioned above.

The existence of Sihr and its actions


Qadhi Thana’ullah Panipati رحمة الله عليه writes that: " It is mentioned that Sihr has the property to even transform physical states. A seasoned magician could turn a human into a donkey and a donkey into human. Imam Baghawi رحمة الله عليه states that the reality of Sihr is accepted in Ahlus sunnah wal Jamaat but to practice upon it is Kufr. "

And Shaikh Abu Mansoor Maturidi رحمة الله عليه mentions that to explicitly speak of Sihr as kufr is not the appropriate way.. moreover, its reality has to be understood and if contains any element contradicting with any Shar’ii injunction then deem it as kufr, not otherwise. (meaning it shall either be among Fisq or Mubaah)

Tafseer Mazhari 106/2, edition: Quetta, Pakistan.

The lowly compiler says that when Sihr and works of occult has the property to transform physical states, then influencing restrictions on livelihood, creating rifts, enmity and separation between married couples, obstacles in birth and sexual dysfunction, likewise effects on other bodily organs or severe hiccoughs etc through such dark arts and forms of magic are not at all impossible.

Let it be clear that Hazrat Qadhi Thana’ullah Panipati رحمة الله عليه has narrated the statement of Shaikh Abu Mansoor Maturidi رحمة الله عليه (translation of Arabic text noted) meaning if the works of magic contains any element which contradicts any Shar’ii injunctions then it is kufr otherwise it is not kufr.

This can be summarized as until the various types of Sihr is not extensively mastered (researched) its realities shall not be known. Thus our able readers, to understand “not otherwise” it shall be imperative to understand the various types.
