The Muslims would pay Zakat and the non Muslims would pay jizya annually. It was a fair price to pay for the protection and freedom.
Jizya was less than the zakat rate.
If the Muslims were unable to keep their promise of protection, the jizya would be refunded to its people.
The non Muslims were told to either embrace Islam willingly, pay the jizya for protection and freedom. Otherwise they could fight the Muslim Army or leave.
As you can imagine, they decided to pay and live peacefully.
After so many years of no jizya being paid in the recent times, only the Taliban successfully charged jizya from its residents.
