salam

i wanted to know what made some sahabah considered as more scholarly than others? generally Ali, Aisha, the 3 abdullahs, muadh ibn Jabal radhiallahu anhum are considered as jurists having more insight. why was this? not so long after the prophets death scholars were generally those who did extra studies in fiqh hadith tasfir etc but none of this was around during the prophets time nor as far as im aware he held advances classes or majaalis.

today we say a jurist is superior than muhadith as the former can take the hadith and derive ruling were as the later only jus collates and narrates. but wearnt all sahaba essentially 'muhadith'? i guess we can make exception for sahaba who the prophet made specific dua for but generally aint they all the same in that regards? bilal, abu bakr, abu sufyan, umar and the ones i mentioned earlier all simply heard thing direclty from the prophets and some saw wahi come in front of them or know when and why it came so what gives on the edge over the other?

btw im not disputing the fact some were more scholarly, just wanted to know why and how as they didnt have extra classes to become schoarly.

In class we all listen to the same lecture but some of us understand it better than the others and are able to score better grades.

So those who were more academic and intellectual? Not to say any sahabi wasn't intellectual. Amr ibn aas رضي الله عنه, muawiyaرضي الله عنه abubakr رضي الله عنه were known for their intelligence and skills at speaking writing and general knowledge so wouldn't they have been among the scholarly type?

Hazrat Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه and Hazrat Muawiya رضي الله عنه certainly were among the scholarly sahaba. Hazrat Amr bin Aas رضي الله عنه devoted his talents towards conquest and administration. He spent comparatively less time in the company of the Prophet (saw).
