The Ottomans

I know very little about the Ottoman Empire.

(1) It was under the Turks.

(2) It came to the fore after the Abbasid Caliphate was obliterated by the Mongols.

(3) It was an Empire even bigger than the Roman Empire at its peak.

(4) These were the people who won Istanbul.

(5) These were the people who knocked at the Gates of Vienna twice.

(6) Their grandeur is legendary.

(7) Lawrence of Arabia, TE Lawrence, incited the Arabs against these people.

(8) These were the people in whose name even the Mughal kings had the Friday sermons.

(9) The held the Muslim Caliphate that Mustafa Kamal abolished.

(10) It is because of their glorious past that the modern liberal democrats Rjab Taiyyab Erdugan.

But this is too little an information.

I would like to talk about this glorious empire in this thread.

My father was born in India in 1922 (officially), unofficially it must have been earlier. His childhood was spent with stories of Khilafah while India was roaring with slogans of Khilafah by GandhiJee and Muslims. (Pakistan) was not in the picture yet.

Hindu and Muslim Children in India used to roam in the villages collecting money for Chanda for safegaurding Khilafah, in fact GandhiJee was the biggest advocate for Ottomans.

People of that generation wore Turkish Fez on weddings, Eid etc to show solidarity with the Ottomans. Wearing it over Sherwani was a normal custom of Indian Shurafa.

I have been to Turkey so many times and once I went with a baseball cap. The Shaykh admonished me in a Majlis and said "You know what this hat means for us (in Turkey) and yet you wear it inside our country..."

So I never wore a baseball cap again in Turkey.

As you would know the connection of the hat to the decline of the Ottoman empire.

P.S: So my love affair with the Ottomans started way before I even knew anything about Khilafah or even much of Islam.

I know the general history of the decline of the Ottoman Empire but what is the exact connection to the baseball cap in particular?

abu mohammed is right.

The Ottoman forces and civil servants and the society in general used to cover their head with Fez. The Secular reforms tried to change the Fez with a peaky hat and then a baseball cap.

The Fez vs Hat became a symbol of Islam vs Secularism

Mustafa Kamal Ataturk mandated baseball style cap. Fez was physically removed from heads and replaced with "caps". There were Muslims who laid down their lives resisting the changing of Sunnah to Secularism.

So many of Sufi Mujahids regard baseball caps (in Turkey) as an abomination and a symbol of attack on Islam.

We (Asians) have no such history and that's why all the Traffic cops under Taliban wore baseball caps as you would see around Kabul when you go around in Taxis etc. In Kabul the only people who officially wore shirts/trousers/caps were Traffic cops under Taliban and I don't why they did that...Must be some symbolic reason, otherwise nobody in Afghanistan dressed like that.

The cops could've worn it to keep the sun out of their eyes, also helps them to keep their gazes lowered.

It would stand out as an identity too, from a distance, that these are cops.

Unless they got it from the booty :)

I thought about it too but then I thought, "Doesn't the Army and everyone who works outdoors also needs protection from sun"? The Taliabn simply cover their faces with the back of the Turban, why the American baseball caps?

Why just the traffic cops and not all cops?

etc. etc. etc.

We asked the Taliban in England why they beat men for not having beards (when it is not in the Hanafi Madhab) and they replied but never knew about traffic cop uniforms back then to ask.

Sarajevo (Bosnia)

www.muftisays.com/forums/27-sharing-portal/7971-karguzari...

Nothing personifies the spirit of the Ottomans as Sarajevo (Bosnia). When the Ottomans were at the peak of their powers, Europeans looked towards Hungary for a modernity and inspiration while the Ottomans were the new power emerging in Europe.

They deliberately selected the most beautiful location and then set out to carve the most beautiful advanced city in Europe to dominate the European landscape.  When you read about Ottomans, you will see examples like this again and again and again where they continuously competed and outdid European (Christians) in mega projects.

Bosnia is the most beautiful country I have ever visited and the Ottomans left a lasting impression on its landscape.

Taqi ad-Din Muhammad ibn Ma'ruf (RA)

Khalifah Murad III was a failure in the long line of Ottoman rulers. He never waged Jihad on Europe and suffered from OCD which prevented him from leading Jumuah Salah, a long custom of the Khaalifah.

His OCD made him think that Muslims were plotting against him and his rule. He would make intention to go for Jamaat prayers and then his OCD would take over and he would come home and pray in his palace. He never led in Jihad either due to fear of plots against him.

Nevertheless, this failure of a Khalifah invited Taqi ad-Din (RA) to form the Constantinople Observatory. It is here that Taqi ad-Din developed his theories of refraction and reflection of light.

Sir Isaac Newton took the pioneering principles of Taqi ad-Din and wrote "Opticks or Treatise of the Reflections, Refractions, Inflections and Colours of Light"

Newton never credits either Taqi ad-Din or the Ottomans for introducing optics to Europe!

Without the patronage of the Ottomans, Europe would not have advanced in the sciences of Optics at all.

Thanks for the info. You'll remember late Abu Tamim RA too used to post such snippets of information about the Muslim world. This is the type of activity that I would have appreciated from our youngsters on SF, MS.

Zaid Hamid made an interesting observation that the Turks have a different mindset from us because they have not passed through European slavery.

Great Famine of Ireland

The period between 1845-1849 is regarded as the "Great Famine" of Ireland. The worst year of the period was 1847, known as "Black '47". During the famine, about one million people died and a million more emigrated from Ireland, causing the island's population to fall by between 20% and 25%.

Ottoman Sultan, Khaleefah Abdul-Majid I, declared his intention to send £10,000 to aid Ireland's farmers. However, Queen Victoria intervened and requested that the Sultan send only £1,000 because she had sent only £2,000 herself. So the Sultan sent only the £1,000, but he also secretly sent five ships full of food. The English courts attempted to block the ships, but the food arrived in Drogheda harbor and was left there by Ottoman sailors.

The Ottoman Navy enjoyed overwhelming superiority and the Ottomans used their superior Military power to circumvent the Royal British Navy and come to the aid of Ireland. Despite, overwhelming military superiority, the Ottomans DID NOT humiliate the Queen in front of her subjects and provided aid to the needy, SECRETLY!

To this day, Drogheda United Football Club emblem carries the Crescent & the Star in gratitude to the Ottoman empire.

Rifle at my hand, faith in my heart
I have two wishes: religion and motherland
My place is army, my elder is the Sultan
Succour the Sultan, my lord!
Prolong his life, my lord!

Minarets are our bayonets, domes are our helmets
Mosques are our barracks, believers are soldiers
This divine army protects my religion
Allah is the greatest, Allah is the greatest!

Our road is holy war, martyrdom is its end
Our religion wants us to service loyally
Our mother is the motherland, our father is the nation
Make the motherland prosperous, my lord!
Make the nation fortunate, my lord!

Minarets are our bayonets, domes are our helmets
Mosques are our barracks, believers are soldiers
This divine army protects my religion
Allah is the greatest, Allah is the greatest!

My banner is oneness*, my flag is crescent
One is green, the other one is red
Ease pain of Islam and take revenge on enemy
Make Islam advance, my lord!
Ruin the enemy, my lord!

Minarets are our bayonets, domes are our helmets
Mosques are our barracks, believers are soldiers
This divine army protects my religion
Allah is the greatest, Allah is the greatest!
