Salaam. I wanted to know about Natur of humanbeing if its fixed entity or it could be changed? Like we have always heard about “ nature can not be changed” is it right or wrong to say?

I heard long ago in Quran translation .. something like.” Unko Shaqi ar badbakht nai banaya”

I was so scared with that verse, I remember it many times and i feel like. There is hatred grown in my heart and that can not be changed. Even i am doing so many good things.

Like from my childhood i was not like my siblings they are ver calm and down to earth but i have always considered myself very special person ( though i wonder now why i even had feelings like that) that means i was by birth like that. If i change my talk or deed etc still my NATURE will stay like that that wont change and Godforbid i may endup in my firsr nature. Please help me understanding this if possible. JazakAllah khair

The Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said, “Allah the Most High said, ‘I am as My servant thinks (expects) I am." [Sahih Al Bukhari].

We must have husn dhann about Allah swt. If we obey Allah swt and make abundant astaghfar, then Allah swt will not diminish our deeds, and our rewards lie with Him in the Hereafter. This is because Allah swt has made Mercy incumbent upon Himself.

When we feel scared or depressed, we reflect on the Mercy of Allah swt, because it encompasses all creation.

In the Quran, Allah swt admonished those who indulge in open disobedience, but also says that if they repent and do good deeds, Allah swt is Most Forgiving.

Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullah,
I would be very grateful to Allah(SWT) and to our cheikh (jazaahullahu kairan) if he could answer a question that is very important to me. I would like to know whether Allah(SWT) could answer my prayer if I asked him to change one or more aspects about my personality, which he created in me (jabalani alaihaa), so that it becomes as part of my natural characteristics.

Answer

Praise be to Allaah.

Allaah is Able to do all things, and if you pray to Him sincerely, he will answer your du'aa'. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

"And when My slaves ask you concerning Me, then I am indeed near (to them by My Knowledge). I respond to the invocations of the supplicants when he calls on Me (without any mediator or intercessor). So let them obey Me and believe in Me, so that they may be led aright." [al-Baqarah 2:186]

Among the evidence that du'aa' may have the benefit of eliminating problematic characteristics is the hadeeth of Umm Salamah (may Allaah be pleased with her), who said: "Abu Salamah came to me one day after being with the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and said: 'I heard from the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) something that made me very happy. He said, "There is no calamity that befalls one of the Muslims and he responds by saying 'Innaa Lillaahi wa innaa ilahi raaji'oon (Truly, to Allaah we belong, and truly, to Him we shall return),' then he says, 'Allaahumma ujurni fi museebati w'ukhluf li khayran minha (O Allaah, reward me in this calamity and compensate me with something better than it),' but Allaah will do that for him."'" Umm Salamah said: "I learnt this from him, and when Abu Salamah died, I said, 'Innaa Lillaahi wa innaa ilahi raaji'oon,' then , 'Allaahumma ujurni fi museebati w'ukhluf li khayran minha,' Then I thought to myself, Where could I find anyone better than Abu Salamah? When my 'iddah (waiting-period) was over, the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) asked permission to see me, whilst I was busy dyeing a hide. I washed the qaraz (a kind of dye derived from a certain plant) from my hands and granted him permission, putting out for him a leather cushion stuffed with palm fibres. He sat down on it, and asked for my hand in marriage. When he had finished what he had to say, I said: 'O Messenger of Allaah, I do not want you to lose interest in me, but I am a very jealous woman, and I am afraid that you may see in me something that could earn me the punishment of Allaah. I am also a woman who is ageing, and I have children.' He said, 'As for the jealousy you mentioned, Allaah will take this away from you (according to another report: as for you saying that you are a jealous woman, I will pray to Allaah to take away your jealousy). As for what you say about age, the same applies to me as to you. As for your children, your children are my children.' So I accepted his offer and the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) married me. Allaah gave me someone even better than Abu Salamah, namely the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him)."

These two reports are in the Musnad of Imaam Ahmad. The hadeeth was also reported by Muslim from Umm Salamah, who said: "The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: 'There is no Muslim who suffers a calamity and says what Allaah has commanded: "Innaa Lillaahi wa innaa ilayhi raji'oon, Allaahumma ujurni fi museebati w'ukhluf li khayran minha," but Allaah will compensate him with something better.' When Abu Salamah died, I said, 'Who among the Muslims could be better than Abu Salamah, the first household to migrate to the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him)?' Then I said [this du'aa'] and Allaah compensated me with the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him). He sent Haatib ibn Abi Balta'ah on his behalf to ask for my hand in marriage, but I said, 'I have a daughter, and I am a jealous woman.' He said, 'As for your daughter, we will pray to Allaah to make her independent, and I will pray to Allaah to take away your jealousy.'" (Reported by Muslim, 1525).

I want to tell you, my brother, that the sincere person whose du'aa's are answered has to be completely honest with Allaah in the way he strives to rid himself of bad characteristics and to acquire good characteristics. If you want proof of this, it is to be found in the hadeeth of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him): "Whoever seeks to be patient, Allaah will give him patience." (Reported by al-Bukhaari, 1376). He (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) also said: "Knowledge comes by learning and patience comes by making oneself be patient." (Reported by al-Daraqutni and others; classed as hasan in Saheeh al-Jaami', 2328).

Allaah has created the means of getting results, so you must pay attention to the laws of Allaah that govern His creation. Use the means of acquiring good characteristics and avoiding bad characteristics so that you may get the results you want. You must strive hard and call on Allaah. Allaah will not betray the hopes of His slaves or cause their hard work and efforts to be lost or wasted.

Wsalam,

I don't know whether certain human natures can be changed or not but it can definitely be overcome.

This is by understanding it, controlling it and simply knowing the harms of it is enough to have negative natures under control and in time hopefully overcome.

I sometime remember, something about my friends whom i have forgiven in heart but still I mostly find myself facing them and fighting them like anything, or like talking to them about their misbehaving or lies etc when i feel like i have these conversation going on in mind, i switch it off.

Do they also fall in “talking to self” category? And i need to avoid?

Good points made by the brothers above. However, I have a different approach in regards to nature and characteristics. I think characteristics are a neutral thing and the more important thing is that in which direction one directs them.

For instance, Sayyidina Umar RA was a Jalali (strict or energetic) person. Before Islam his jalal was used against Muslims. After Islam, his jalal was used against kuffar and munafiqeen. Prophet Muhammad SAWS didn't end his jalal. However, he trained him in a way that it's direction was changed.

Abu Jahil was a leader and had leadership qualities. This is the reason that Prophet Muhammad SAWS made dua from Allah for Amr bin Hasham (Abu Jahil) and Umar bin Khattab RA. He didn't accept Islam. However, his son Ikrima RA accepted Islam later on. Ikrima RA being son of a leader and having genetics of his father may have had leadership qualities as well. With tarbiyah, his qualities shined and were used in favour of Islam.

Sayyidina Mauwiya RA being son of a leader (Abu Sufyan RA) had had leadership qualities which were further polished through training and experience under the discipleship of first Prophet Muhammad SAWS and then Sayyidina Abu Bakr RA and Umar RA as governor of Shaam in their times.

If one is a jealous person then it can be converted into Ghairah for Allah and His deen.
If one is an angry person then it can be directed to kuffar in the battle field
If one is a skeptic then one can direct one's skepticism against one's nafs and it's trickery to avoid pride
If one is a proud person then one can change that pride in confidence in deen and sunnah ways
If one is a liar then one can direct that "trait" in order to calm two Momineen down so that they could forgive each other and be friends again. Or one can lie to protect secrets of Muslimeen.

So it is my belief that no one is born sinful and everyone has qualities and all qualities are neutral. It is the environment and the will of a person itself which sets the direction of those traits.

This is why true and authentic mashaikh are necessary so that they can teach to change the direction of one's traits from negative to positive.
