As salamu alaikum..big change of subject but I wanted to know what people thought about this...

I agree that tv today is completely wrong to watch and is probably one of the biggest social evils in society. today u don't have to go to a club, kill anyone yourself or commit adultary because it can all come to you in the comfort of your living room via tv!!

BUT can it be used for good?? Some Muftis say that the very concept of it is Hraam due to picture making e.g if I am not mistaken respected Mufti Ibrahim Desai at askimam.org

to be honest, Islam channel and the likes are just so loose on so many things that it itself may lead people to sin. Allah says in the Quran to tell the believers to lower their gaze...so how can men watch women and vice versa on tv!!

aww totally against any sort of viewing incl. pictures in books and magazines, mainly my main hate the shatanic t.v. no good just destruction of ones imaan and modesty, not to mention the lack of respect that is lost amongst families who gather and watch this time wasting rubbish, Qur'aan and Sunnah enough to keep one busy and occupied in educating oneself. sorry can't find anything positive to say about the t.v. however it is true that one cannot remain ignorant when it comes to awareness of what is happening around ones surroundings incl. world issues, but islamic literature, news on the internet keeps me informed on whats happening around the world, however how reliable is the news on the television, and papers that we are suppose to keep ourselves updated with? i think this is where the help of the faculty of mind and imaan comes in, to guide us to see the truth amongst all the propaganda.

may Allah s.w.t. protect us from the devil himself the shatanic t.v.

i too agree that tv is a tool of shaytan! One Imaan cannot blossom with tv around!

But then wot do you do with the technology? is it to be discarded?? yes, perhaps we can do that, but unfortunely the world won't...(for at least some time!)

e.g. wot I am getting at is, is there a possiblity of appling the shariah concept of Ahwanul Baliyatain - lesser of the 2 evils?

e.g voting for a person who does not follow Shariah and upholds haram concepts is haram, but many scholars have said that not voting incurs even more haram and harm, so voting is the lesser of the 2 evils as at least we can influence change for the better in some aspects.

In the end of the day all we need is.....TAQWA!!

If we FEAR ALLAH then that will help us to make the right decsison. But if we incline to our Nafs..then that's it!!...If wish the 4 Great Imaams Rahmatualli alayhim had to deal with some of these present day issues!! It would have made things alot easier for the rest of us.

Asalamualaikum wa Rahmatullah

it's okay if the four imams [and im assuming you mean the Khulafah ar Rashidun radhiAllahuanhu] didn't experience any of these fitnah today, nor did Rasulillah Sal'Allahualayhiwasalam. Subhan'Allah walhamdulillah wallahuakbar this Deen is So complete there isn't/wasn't a need for it, after all Allah Subhanahu wa ta'ala did Decree it. Although sister/brother i do understand what you are saying, sometimes we all wish things like that, but Alhumdulillah this deen is so complete that when we look towards the Shariah and the Sunnah the solutions to all our problems lie within those two. We just have to look hard and search, insha'Allah we will find our answers. And insha'Allah may we be united with the Lovers of Allah Subhanahu wa ta 'ala under His Shade at The Fountain of Abundance inshaa'Allah.

duas..

some mothers put t.v on for their child/ren while doing chores. whats worse, there are new 'islamic' animated programmes out specifically for children. they sell them in alot of islamic book shops. i think its pointless and totally going out of proportion. also, there is a dvd out with regards to the story of 'habeel & kabil'. its animated and with faces. ive seen their advertisements over the internet. some people think its allowed because its islamic. thats hypocritical to a mu'min. i say we should avoid, at all cost, the t.v. it brings in arguements, bad thoughts etc in the home. there is no 'haya' between the people who watch it as nudity seems to be a norm in this society. how can mercy descend ones home if there is a t.v displaying silly, nonsense programmes. even news, i say we can check on the net. i pray we can all put an end to t.v full stop before it becomes a norm to watch programmes that display sexual desires/fantasies, kissing etc with our own respected parents and children!! (believe it or not, ive already seen it present in some homes!!)

Subhan Allah, no doubt I should have meant he Khulafa ar Rashidun but actually i was referring to the 4 Great Fuqaha as their Fiqh genius would be able to sort out such issues with ease. Present day 'mujahideen' wanna bees are entagled, like us all, in their nafs and decisions made are not entirely devoid of this coroding influence!

We all know picture making is haram - no doubt. This piece of info i read on a fatwa made the whole issue of tv pretty clear (???):

tv is of course 'motion pictures' - i.e. 30 picture frames/sec thus in fact you are seeing loads of pictures in quick sucession - so though it appears moving they are in fact just pictures!

Allah save us from Shaytan and our Nafs Inshallah.

Wa alaikum salam wa rahmatullah...

A very intresting discussion...with very good points mashallah..

On a personal level I feel the TV is a 'BIG MISTAKE'...unfortunately most of us grow up with it around us so we don't realise how harmful the effects are..we just think its 'normal'...

Initially it's hard to get away from cuz you have your nafs telling you to spnd that spare 5-10 mins sitting in front of the TV instead of doing some voluntray act of ibaadah and that 'its just 5 minutes' but before long those 5-10 mins end up as an hour or two sometimes resulting in missing salah etc...

Our nafs is like a suckling infant, the more we give into it..the more control it will have over us..you just need to break it once and it will begin to crumble...Shaykh asif Hussain Farooqi says that in reality 'it only takes a week to break the nafs' thats when you have true control over yourself...

Stay away from the TV and you'll find yourself feeling so much more content..you'll find yourself engaging in ibbadah so much more readily because your not waiting to watch so and so programme at so and so time...

Subhanallah its amazing how taking out the infulence of one piece of modern thechnology out of your lives can result in so much peace!

Sis OrangeHijab I couldnt have put it any better!

Mya Allah Ta'ala make us all steadfast on the deen and give us the inclination to remove all that comes in the way of becomin close to Him Allah Ta'ala.Ameen.

Stranger

"A few months before I was born, my dad met a stranger who was new to our small town. From the beginning, my father was fascinated with this enchanting newcomer, and soon invited him to live with our family. The stranger was quickly accepted and was around to welcome me into the world a few months later.
As I grew up. I never questioned his place in our family. In my young mind, each member had a special niche. My brother, Yusuf, five years my senior, was my example. Samiyya, my younger sister, gave me an opportunity to play ' big brother' and develop the art of teasing. My parents were complimentary instructors. Mother taught me to love Allah and father taught me how to obey Him. But the stranger was our storyteller. He could weave the most fascinating tales. Adventures, mysteries were daily conversations. He could hold our whole family spell-bound for hours each evening. If I wanted to know about politics, history, or science, he knew it.
He knew about the past and seemed to understand the present. The pictures he could draw were so life like that I would often laugh or cry as I watched. He was like a friend to the whole family. He was always encouraging us to see the movies and he even made arrangements to introduce us to several famous people.
The stranger was an incessant talker. Father didn't seem to mind, but sometimes mother would quietly get up, while the rest of us were enthralled with one of his stories of faraway places go to her room, read the Qur'an and offer Namaz.
I wonder now if she ever prayed that the stranger would leave. You see, my father ruled our household with certain moral convictions. But this stranger never felt obligation to honor them.
But the stranger felt like we needed exposure and enlightened us to other ways of life.
He made cigarettes look tasty. He talked freely (probably too much too freely). His comments were sometimes blatant, sometimes suggestive, and generally embarrassing.
As I look back, I believe it was Allah's Mercy that the stranger did not influence us more. Time after time he opposed the values of my parents. Yet he was seldom rebuked and never asked to leave.
You would still see him sitting over in a corner, waiting for someone to listen to him talk and watch him draw his pictures.
Can you guess, who?
