salam

my friend was saying that islamically a woman should only have 1 cloth that covers her head to toe. he sent me some link but seemed off key as the so called expert in arabic language were non muslims who defines the term jilbab.

iv never came across anything like this before. is there really an opinion that only 1 cloth should be used? most use jilbab + hijab.

also am i right that as long as body is fully covered and not tight/revealing/see through it is accetable? eg loose dress or long skirt with loose top etc.

one more thing. i while ago i heard a talk by shaykh yasir qadhi but i only bit of it and he was explaning the verse about covering. he mentioned in prophets time the term khimar ( i think thats the term) was used for hijab ( head covering) and hijab meant extra covering. he said how modernist and munafq use the verse to say hijab is only for the ummahatul muslimeen and site that verse as it mentions only wives to have hijab.

does anyone know more about this?

A few months ago I was curious as to whether a woman has to wear jilbab whenever she leaves home, due to the verses of the Quran, and therefore when she goes to eid, due to the hadith.

This is what I found online:
Quote:

The description and conditions of the Islamic hijab are as we have underlined on our website. The sharee'ah does not enjoin a fixed style of dress that the Muslim woman must wear. Rather, there are conditions that should be met for a given clothing to be approved by the sharee'ah. The Muslim woman is not obliged to wear an outer garment if the clothes that she is wearing duly conceal her body (and meet the conditions of the Islamic hijab) and there is no harm on her for wearing such modest clothing outdoors, even if she wears no outer garment over it.

If the conditions of the Islamic hijab are met in the skirt and the traditional Pakistani dress (salwar kameez), then there is no religious impediment for the Muslim woman to wear such clothes in public places before non-mahram (marriageable) men. However, skirts usually do not meet the hijab requirements as they may be somehow tight and outline the body, for instance.

Quote:

Al-Qurtubi may Allaah have mercy upon him defined the Jilbaab as follows: “It is a garment larger than a Khimaar (large head cover).” More correctly, the Jilbaab is the outer garment that covers the whole body. We quoted this statement of Al-Qurtubi in the previous Fatwa 270067, which suffices in defining the term.

Thus, the Jilbaab is not associated with any specific type of clothing or particular color. Rather, a Muslim woman may wear any clothes that meet the required criteria of the Islamic dress code, be it a Milhafah (wrap), an ‘Abaayah (cloak) or a Mulaa'ah (a loose wrap-around) or anything else. The main consideration is that the clothes cover the whole body and meet the requirements of the Islamic Hijab that have been specified by scholars as explained in Fatwa 83702, to which we referred you previously.

A Muslim woman in the present day may wear any type of clothing as long as it is loose fitting (not defining the contours of the body) and non-transparent, and it meets all the requirements of the Islamic Hijab.
