As salaamu alaykum

I had always assumed that Mufti Menk followed the ulama of Deoband but his stance on tawassul is the exact same as the Salafis, that the dead cannot hear you even when you're near (except for what has been explicitly stated in hadith, such as footsteps), and that Rasulullah sallAllahu alayhi wa sallam also cannot hear you beyond what has been described (e.g. salam at his grave).

Waalaykumsalaam.

Can you tell me if what I've written in this blog post is incorrect as my sources are the Ulama of Deoband, Salafi Ulama, Barelwi Ulama and Mufti Menk.

www.muftisays.com/blog/abu+mohammed/4002_14-03-2017/wasee...

Then we can discuss further on what you and I understand on Tawassul and the hearing of the dead.

Can the dead hear?

According to what Mufti Menk has said, "except for what has been explicitly stated in hadith"

www.muftisays.com/forums/86-qa-support--fiqh/10959-addres...

So the dead can hear, but not beyond what is prescribed by Allah. And there is nothing wrong in that statement in itself.

The above is proof from authentic Hadith that the dead can hear, but this doesn't mean that they can hear everything else too. Only that which is permitted and mentioned in Quran and Sunnah.

Deobandi Answer
Nabi (Sallallaahu Alayhi Wasallam) said, "Whenever a Muslim passes by and greets the grave of someone he knew in this world, Allah returns the soul of the deceased to his body so that he can reply to the greeting."

The abovementioned Hadith proves that the dead are able to hear. However, it also proves that only those who Allah permits that they should hear will be able to hear. While the Hadith tells us that Allah Ta'ala returns the soul, hence, they will only be able to hear the speech of one with the permission of Allah.

I see no contradiction on What is mentioned in the OP and what is being stated by Mufti Ebrahim Desai.

Deobandi Answer
The scholars have differences of opinion on whether the inmates of the grave can hear the visitors or not. According to one Aayat of the noble Qur’aan, Allah Ta’ala says, ‘Verily you cannot make the dead hear.’

After the battle of Badr, Rasulullah (Sallallaahu Alayhi Wasallam) addressed the Kuffaar who were killed and thrown into the well. Upon enquiry, Rasulullah (Sallallaahu Alayhi Wasallam) said, ‘They (the dead) hear very clearly.’

In view of the different quotations, many scholars have concluded that the dead hear if Allah wills.

W-Salam,

I have no idea what Mufti Menk (HA) says or beliefs but just asking a different question.

Do you know the ability of dead listening (how, when, conditions and the mechanism) and Tawwasul are two separate issues?

There are various views on this topic, but Mufti Menk seems to be closer the Hanafis in this topic!

Quote:
Ibn al-Humam (Allah have mercy on him) mentioned that most Hanafi scholars take the view that the dead do not hear, using as proof His statement (Most High) “Truly thou canst not cause the dead to listen” (27:80) and “Thou canst not make those to hear who are (buried) in graves” (35:22) and for this reason, the Hanafis say: if one swears he will not speak to someone and he speaks to him when he is dead, he has not broken his oath.

Yes sir, that is exactly what I was trying to figure out. The topic is academically interesting but apparently 'true' tasawwuf has nothing to do with hearing or otherwise of the dead. Tasawwuf is about 'improving one,s conduct according to sharia and Sunna to the point of excellence', well, that is the objective. Some people may succeed 50% others may be more successful, but at no stage the issue of how much the dead can hear us arise in tasaweuf. There seems to be some misunderstanding here...
