Whats the Score with all these International Islamic Charities? Seems like we get a new one being established every couple of months?

Which are the trusted and reliable charities?

I stay away from most as they don't have 100% donation policy.

Others make appeals left right and centre yet I'm sure parts of the donations go into advertising, TV, staffing for TV and so on.

So I'd rather give to my local Masjid or Ummah Welfare Trust.

However, I will take this chance to publicise http://www.nawaal.org/

Nawaal is run by locals of Hackney, London and I have heard reputable speakers asking for donations to be given to them. In fact, some of those scholars have even said that charity begins at home, so we should donate to our local charities first and then extend further.

I had one Indian man knock on my door on the weekend. Clean shaven Desi, As soon as I opened the front door, he gave me a small paper with the Green Dome of Masjid-e-Nabawi on it and Allah Mohammed written on it.

Then he said they come every year for donations for the Orphans of India etc. (it's my second year in my house, so I wouldn't know)

He pulled out a piece of laminated paper with a signature on it supposedly saying that they were a registered charity, all in Hindi.

I was very honest with him and told him that I didn't have any change whats so ever.

As he was speaking to me, I became suspicious of him as his Hindi started jumping to Punjabi.

When I told him I didn't have a penny for him, he insisted on larger notes instead of small change. I had to tell him again, I didn't have any money on me or in the house at all. We use contactless for almost everything :)

Anyway, my suspicion of him grew stronger so I wanted to inform my neighbours of him. When I went upstairs, I saw another of his men. This then confirmed my suspicion that they were Sikh and not Muslim. The second man had an ear-ring in one ear and a small Turban.

I logged onto the CCTV, (as an engineer, I installed one for myself since I managed to buy a cheap kit) took a screenshot of the guy at my door and sent it out to locals via my kids and wife's mobile too. My message had his picture, a picture of the pamphlet and a small description.

I heard this stuff was happening and always thought it was lies trying to scare people, but I experienced it my self for the first time.

I suspect these guys were either looking for empty homes to target, or simply target Muslim's.

My wife and kids use the chain or the peephole on the door before opening the door, but now I've told them to ask whoever is at the door to look up - Get a clear picture of them face on when they look into the camera :) and when they see the camera, they will go away inshaAllah.

I looked at those websites all of them apparently have a 100% donation. All of them work in consultation with religious Scholars.

I think that was one thing concerning me individuals coming from academic or professional backgrounds setting up charities with very little input from Ulemah.

Khayr even have masjids projects being setup with out any input from Ulemah, even strange ways of raising money for the building of masjids and because of their ghayr shari methods the projects remaining in limbo for years at-least know 2 such projects only semi-built after more then a decade of the work starting. Going by a lecture of Shaykh Zulfiqar Ahmed (DB) who ever intiates the project of building a Masjid ALLAH makes it easy for him.

One thing my dad hates now is doing favours for people collecting money.

He did it for a couple of years to build something in India and America. Neither worked out and my dad was fuming, he told the people they had to return all the money they took, back to the rightfull people.

Till today, some of his freinds ask him what happened about the Masjid's and he's stuck.

It is hard getting the money in the first place, but when everything falls through, the money should be returned.

People give it with good intentions so inshaAllah, they will be rewarded, but can you imagine the sin on the head of those who do not complete the work or stop completely and keep the money :(

Well on a similar theme we had an Maulana build a masjid went around asking for loans to help build the masjid rather then straightforward donations promising to repay the money within a set period. Although the project is finally completed people are still waiting for loans to be re-payed some have been waiting years. This has caused lot of ill will, many of those people asked for loans were ordinary working people persuaded to give loans more then they could afford. This Maulana sahib, either does'nt answer the phone or continuously makes promises of paying the money in the next few months, with no payments forth coming.

And in another project in a small rural town with a small muslim community already had a good sized masjid bought decades ago more than sufficient for the communities needs for average Salah you will get a dozen or so worshippers.... Only problem was that many Muslims travel into the area to work in business and industrial parks. On Jumahs the Masjid is filled to the Brim. Whilst all that was required was have 2 Jamaats for Jumah. If not that then the Masjid actually had planning permission to extend.

The Chairman and the committee for some bizarre reason about 15 years ago decided to buy another much
larger property, after years of fundraising, the builder they hired to build the new masjid ran of with the money. Then Chairman tried to sell the original Masjid on the market until being informed one is not allowed to sell the house of Allah. He is now trying to sell the Masjid which is Deobandi to Dawat E Islami without the approval of the local community so he can pay for the second property. Even more strange the original Masjid has ample car parking the new building in a busy location has none.

Yep there is an Ummah Welfare Foundation not to be confused with Ummah Welfare Trust. The Ummah welfare Foundation was investigated a few years by Charity commision and cncerns were raised about them not keeping proper records.

My entire purpose of the thread was new charities being set up, and using a similar name to an older established charity, to raise funds.

For example you have Human appeal, Human relief, Human Help, Human Hands. So one can get easily confused. You have similar play on words by charities using the word "Islamic" or "Muslim".

All so need to be aware of the charity scams run by some of these TV channels their was a scandal involving the rabidly sectarian Barelvi TV Station Ummah channel. Also the NOOR Tv channel was fined in the methods used to raise money.
